Snow entered her room, balancing soup and burn cream on a tray. Regina sat huddled on the bed, as quiet as she had been when they had found her in the basement.
"I brought some food," Snow said, placing the tray gently on the bed. Grabbing the cream, she gently began applying it to the burn marks on Regina's forehead. Regina didn't even flinch; she just stared at her trembling hands with empty, dead eyes. It scared Snow, because Regina always looked alive with some emotion, even if it was just anger or hate.
Silence filled the room as Snow worked quietly on healing Regina. She had just finished when Regina finally spoke.
"She doesn't have it," she said, and even her voice was dead and numb.
"Have what?" Snow asked gently, knowing that if she pressed too hard, Regina would retreat back into herself and not say anymore.
"Goodness," Regina answered, sill staring at her hands. "You told me once that you believed everybody had goodness in them, but she doesn't have it. And I realized that I don't have it either, because I would have done the exact same thing if I was her." She laughed, but it was humorless and weak. "I have done the exact same thing, so I really am as evil as her."
"No!" Snow protested. "You may have made some rather…bad... decisions in your past, but you still have goodness in you. Otherwise people like Daniel or Henry would never have believed that you could change and be better."
"But Daniel's dead, and Henry hates me!" And it's all because of you!" She pushed the tray off her lap, and the bowl crashed on the floor, sending porcelain shards and soup flying. "It's all your fault! You've taken everything away from me! My love, my son, my only chances of getting a happy ending, they're all gone, and it's all because of you! I have nothing, I have no one anymore!"
Snow didn't react angrily. Instead, she grabbed a broom and began sweeping up the fragments that littered the floor, giving herself time to think of a response and giving Regina time to calm down.
"I think," Snow began, "that you are so focused on the picture in your head of what your happy ending's supposed to be that you block out everything else that could make you happy if you just tried. Henry does care about you, Regina, but he loves Emma too, so you have to be willing to make compromises."
Regina didn't say anything, so Snow sighed and continued. "You have to stop viewing us as the enemy, Regina. We might have our issues, but right now, we have an even greater evil to face. We're on the same side, Regina, so can we at least try to work together?"
Regina shifted subjects rather than answering. "Why did you save me?" she asked.
"Because whether any f us like it or not, we're family. And families protect each other no matter what. So you're not alone, Regina, because you have us, and all we want is for you to be the person we know you are inside."
Regina didn't reply – not that Snow expected her to. She grabbed the fallen tray and moved towards the kitchen.
"I'll be in the living room," she told the other woman. "If you need anything, just call, okay?"
Regina gave a barely perceptible nod, and Snow was almost out the door when Regina's voice stopped her.
"Snow? Regina's voice was quiet, hesitant. "…Thank you."
Turning around Snow gave a small smile, and replied, "Anytime."
Then she left, and Regina was left alone, but she felt, for the first time in a very long time, that she had found somewhere she belonged.
