Chapter 26
"Emma!" Snow exclaims as her daughter takes in a deep, gasping breath. "H-how…y-you're…you're alive!" Both she and David immediately reach down and wrap their arms around her tightly, sobbing openly all over again.
"Guys." Emma protests, laughing weakly. "A little room, please?"
"Sorry." They release her, though they still find little ways to stay in contact. Snow's hand reaches up and begins to come through her hair while David keeps his hand on Emma's.
"Oh, sweetheart." Snow says. "You were dead."
Emma wrinkles her nose at the use of the pet name, but then turns to her mother in confusion. "Wait. You called me…did you get your memories back? I mean I did but I thought it was just some sort of side effect from coming back to life."
Snow nods, her eyes brimming with tears. "I did. Everyone else too. All thanks to you."
"How?"
"By pushing Snow out of the way." David answers gently.
Emma frowns. "Like…with Cora? That released magic or something?"
David nods in agreement. "Exactly."
"Wow." Emma whistles. "Who knew?"
They help her off the table, though to no one's surprise she protests the entire time. "Guys! I can walk by myself." Emma says as she attempts to shake them off.
"You just died." David reminds her.
"And I came back to life." Emma says stubbornly. "I'm perfectly fine."
Snow and David exchange an eye roll behind her back. Only Emma.
"I'm going to go get you a fresh change of clothes." Snow starts heading out of the room.
"And you must be hungry." David adds.
"Um, wait." Emma says almost shyly, causing them to turn around.
They wait patiently for her to continue, knowing by experience that pushing her to talk isn't going to help.
"I, um, I heard what you said. Back when I was, you know…dead." She starts.
"And?" Snow prompts gently.
"And…" She looks up at her parents. "I love you too."
That statement is enough to send Snow and David back into the room, their arms around her once more in a tight embrace. This time, Emma allows them to hug her.
"The wardrobes should be finished soon." Gepetto announces to a rousing cheer.
David stands up to address the crowd. "Excellent work. We have come to a decision regarding the wardrobes. They will be available for transport back to Storybrooke. But those who wish to remain here may do so. It's up to you. As for us…" He looks over at Snow.
"As for us, we will be returning to Storybrooke." Snow finishes.
David nods in agreement. Although he wants to stay here and rebuild his home, he knows that they must return to Storybrooke for Henry. There will be plenty of time to return to the Enchanted Forest and when that time comes he wants it to be with his entire family.
The crowd slowly disperses, and a figure approaches. "Um, Emma?" It's Neal. "Can I talk to you?" He asks cautiously, as if afraid of her reaction.
David steps forward looking as though he's going to punch Neal in the face, but Emma pushes him back. "It's fine. I got this." She follows Neal to a more secluded part of the room.
"So you're going back to Storybrooke." He starts.
She nods. "For Henry, yeah. And also because I really miss pizza." She jokes.
He laughs, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. "Ha. Yeah, same here. So I was, uh, thinking. When we get back…do you wanna grab a drink or something? Dinner maybe?"
She stares at him, amusement crossing her face. "Are you trying to ask me out?"
"Maybe? I mean it's ok if you say no. I totally get it."
Part of her wants to say no, that he's hurt her too much and that it would be easier to move on. But the other part of her, the part that has grown from her time here, is willing to forgive.
"Ok." She answers.
His eyebrows fly up in surprise; clearly he'd been expecting her to turn him down. "Ok." He echoes. "Cool."
"Cool." She half smiles.
"See you at home." Mary Margaret says as Emma tucks her legs underneath her inside the wardrobe. How had she fit into this thing before? Oh, right. She'd been a baby. Although Gepetto had thought to make them a little bigger it's still not designed for a fully grown adult.
"See ya." Emma replies. As the doors are shut, she catches one last glimpse of the castle that was meant to be her home before her world grows dark and she starts spinning through time and space. She's surprised to find that she'll actually miss this place.
Maybe someday I'll go back. She thinks. Me, Henry, and…my parents. She even throws in Neal and Regina, feeling unusually generous. Live out the life I was meant to have. The life we were all meant to have.
But for now she's just glad to be going home.
