When they arrived in Havenport, Roderick immediately knew something was wrong. The town was virtually empty. The followers had gone.

As they pulled in and Caleb checked them into the motel.

Roderick immediately turned the TV on to the news. Lauren came in as the story aired.

Joe Carroll had died at a fire at the lighthouse nearby.

Lauren was relieved. Everyone would be safe. Everything is okay.

She looked to Roderick, who stood still as stone watching. He had no reaction.

Nathan stepped inside, hearing the news from the parking lot. He stood and watched, hands in his pockets.

"Well," Nathan said quietly, "I suppose that's it then…"

Lauren watched Roderick. She wondered if he would grieve for his fallen leader, even though he'd betrayed him.

"It's not over," Roderick said lowly, "Joe's not dead."

Lauren looked to him. "Why would they say he is?"

Roderick shook his head. "It's not him… it's his half brother… I set this plan up myself."

"What are you talking about?" Nathan asked, arms suddenly crossed over his chest.

Roderick spun on his heels. "If the FBI had ever gotten too close, we were going to stage Joe's murder. He has a half brother who shares paternal DNA. It's his body they found in the fire. Joe is alive."

Lauren shook her head. "Then where is he?"

Roderick breathed deep. "We'd only set up the plan and that Carlos would pick him up from a nearby road and that's it… we hadn't planned the rest of it. Or if Joe had, he never told me."

Nathan took in a deep breath. "Where would he have gone?"

Roderick shrugged, angry. "I have no idea…"

Lauren suddenly felt uneasy. "So what now?"

Nathan looked to Roderick. "What do you want us to do?"

Roderick stood, thinking, face serious. He'd have to find Joe… and this would also be the time that he gave up Lauren.

"I need to find Joe," he said, "It may be a while, but I'll find him."

Nathan nodded. "You know that we're available to you if you need us. My offer still stands."

Roderick extended his hand to shake. "Thank you, Nathan."

Roderick turned toward Lauren, who stood confused and worried.

"You can't stay in Havenport anymore," he told her reluctantly, "It still might not be safe."

Lauren's eyes widened. She hadn't planned on having to give up her home.

"Where would be safe?" she asked half sarcastically. She wished Roderick would've had this discussion with her privately.

Roderick looked to Nathan.

"You're welcome in Kentucky," Nathan offered. Roderick lowered his eyes. He'd been right about Nathan taking care of her. He'd probably be right about a lot of things when it came to the two of them.

Lauren looked at Roderick incredulously. "You've already talked to him about this?"

Roderick shook his head, somber. "No… but it would be the safest place for you."

Lauren took a step towards him, her eyes watering. He was trying to get rid of her.

"And what about you?" she asked quietly, "Go hunt Joe Carroll?"

He opened his mouth to respond but Nathan interrupted him.

"You're welcome in Kentucky as well," he said seriously, "The both of you are."

Lauren looked to Roderick, her eyes begging him to agree to it.

Roderick studied her face. He knew he'd have to give her up… but he hadn't planned on it being this damn hard.

"You'll have to do some researching," Nathan said, stepping behind Lauren, "You'll need a place to start…"

Nathan could see that Roderick was torn. Nathan knew that Roderick wasn't a good fit for Lauren but he could also see that Lauren didn't agree with that. He wanted what was best for her, even if that meant keeping her around Roderick.

Lauren waited for Roderick's response, already trying to calm herself down for when he said no.

His eyes flicked to her scar. He'd thought that would be the only thing he left her with… but now looking at her, it was harder than he'd thought.

"It's okay, Nathan," she said quietly, willing her strength, "Roderick needs to finish this."

It was killing her to say that. It was killing her to let him go. He had a heart, damnit. She couldn't give up on him that easily. Even if he thought he was a monster, she knew he wasn't. She wore the proof on her neck.

"I'll come to Kentucky," he said, just once wanting himself wrong, wanting to actually be there for her, wanting to be something she needed.

Lauren's eyes watered to the brim. It took everything she had not to let her tears fall in gratitude.

He reached out and took her hand and she almost burst with appreciation. That was the only affection she needed from him.

Roderick studied her face and her scar. He still knew that he wasn't good enough for Lauren and would never be. He knew that Nathan would be a far better man to her. But he couldn't bring himself to let her go. And for right now, he wouldn't have to yet.
