"Vaughn it's time to wake up sweetie" Vaughn slowly sat up resting on his forearm and rubbing his eye.

"Vaughn! Vaughn you're going to have so much fun there's tons of other kids and you'll get to eat snacks and draw things and-"

"Calm down Skye he just woke up, go help your father with breakfast."

"Ok mama!" eight year old Skye ran out of the room he shared with his brother.

Six year old Vaughn yawned and blinked a few times "Morning mama…."

"Good morning come on lets go eat then we can get you ready for your first day of school."

Vaughn nodded, getting out of bed and heading for the bathroom.

"Dad! Dad! Dad I cant wait to show Vaughn around school it's gonna be so cool!"

"You sure do have a ton of energy" he cracked an egg "don't go dragging him around against his will you hear"

"Ok dad. I'm just so happy he gets to come to school with me now!"

Vaughn and their mother came into the kitchen after their father announced breakfast was ready. After breakfast their parents helped Vaughn get ready for school as Skye kept going on about how awesome school is.

"Alright now you boys behave and Skye be a good big brother and take care of Vaughn ok?" their mother gave them each their lunch and a kiss on the forehead. "Have fun! oh and we're having mushroom curry tonight so try not to talk with your friends for too long on the way home"

"Ok mama" the two boys said in unison. After hugging both their parents they set off for school.

"Alright Vaughn hold my hand there's a few streets we need to cross, oh and walk on the right of me there's a scary dog on the way"

Vaughn took his brothers hand and looked up at him "But dogs aren't scary…"

"Well I think they are."

When they saw the dog Vaughn didn't think it was all that scary but Skye still didn't let him go near it. About fifteen minutes after that they made it to school.

"Alright Vaughn you have to got that way so I'll see you after school" Skye pointed to the door with a 4 on it and gave Vaughn a small nudge.

"We're not in the same room?"

"No we're in different grades so we're in different rooms."

Vaughn grabbed his brothers hand "Why aren't we in the same grade we're brothers."

"I'm older than you Vaughn that's the way they place us now go on before we're both late."

Vaughn looked down and let go of Skye's hand "...ok"

"Don't look so down its only a few hours and I just know you'll make lots of friends, you won't even miss me!" Skye nudged him towards the door again "I gotta go for real ok you'll have fun I promise!"

And Skye was right Vaughn did have fun of course he was a bit nervous but so were all the other kids. when school ended Vaughn was a bit hesitant to tell Skye that he really didn't miss him.

"Told you so" Skye teased "And you were all scared"

"I-I wasn't scared…..I wa-" The loud sirens of a fire truck cut Vaughn off.

"oh man I hope whoever's in trouble is alright." Skye said after the the sirens were out of earshot.

"Yeah me too." said Vaughn

As they approached their street Skye gasped. "That's our house!" Skye took off running with Vaughn trying his hardest to keep up. "DAD! MAMA!" Skye headed straight for the house but a fireman quickly stopped him.

"What are you doing boy that's dangerous!"

"But my mom and dad are…"

"So they're your parents I'll have someone take you to the hospital"

Skye and Vaughn sat in the waiting room in almost complete silence.

"Skye where's mama and dad?"

Skye couldn't bring himself to answer the doctor had told him earlier that they both died and they were now waiting for the orphanage representative to come pick them up.

"Skye? When are we going home? I'm hungry."

Skye cracked and began to cry "Vaughn we're not going home and mom and dad aren't coming back"

"W-what do you mean were having curry tonight mama said so!" Vaughn stood in front of his brother on the brink of tears "MAMA SAID SO!

"I KNOW WHAT SHE SAID BUT SHE'S DEAD! DEAD PEOPLE CAN'T MAKE CURRY!" Skye immediately regretted yelling as Vaughn began to cry in the heart wrenching uncontrollable sobs that only a child can. "Vaughn, Vaughn I'm sorry…" Skye hugged his only remaining family member.

"I-I wanna go home" Vaughn sniffed

"Me too."

~5 years later~

"Ok children you know the drill it's adoptathon today so be on your best behavior."

"yes ma'am" the kids chorused.

"So what do you think little brother pretty snazzy right?"

"I guess kinda girly though….."

"Hey I was born with a beautiful face and I'm going to use it. I think these clothes fit my image exactly."

"Narcissist"

"Hey I'm just proud!" Vaughn laughed and punched Skye's arm as he left the room. "Where are you going?"

"Outside your head is taking up the whole room."

"Ha ha very funny." Skye left in the other direction to get his friends opinion but on the way he bumped into some adults. "So sorry sir I wasn't paying attention."

"Oh my honey he's so respectful not to mention drop dead gorgeous"

Skye blushed a little "Thank you ma'am"

"Honey I want this one" the lady clung to her husband's arm and gave puppy dog eyes.

"Alright I'll go find the headmistress." as the man left she returned her attention to Skye.

"So whats your name and how old are you?"

"My name is Skye and I'm 13 um also I have a brother he's out in the courtyard if you'd like to meet him."

The woman became extremely excited "oh there's two of you yes I'd love to meet him!"

Vaughn was sitting under a tree playing with a bunny when they approached him.

"soooo cute what's your name?"

Vaughn looked at her then at Skye who mouthed 'answer her'

"I'm Vaughn….." they chatted with the woman for a bit until her husband came and told her it was time to go.

"I think we nailed it!" Skye said putting his hair in a ponytail for the night.

"I wouldn't get my hopes up" Vaughn said placing his toothbrush in the cup on the sink.

"Don't be such a downer Vaughn they really like us."

"They all like us to our face I bet they were laughing about us on the way home" Vaughn walked out of the bathroom hall and headed towards their room and Skye followed.

The next week Skye was called to the headmistress' office.

"Congratulations you've been adopted!"

"What about Vaughn?"

"oh dear he was just a bit too gloomy for my taste….." the woman from before said.

Skye left without another word and immediately went to the tree he knew he'd find Vaughn under.

"Vaughn you won't believe it they're trying to-"

"I know. I'm too gloomy" He glared at Skye "I that face really is good for something."

Skye furrowed his brow "What's that supposed to mean? I'm not going to let them take me without you."

"They don't want me."

"I'll show them your not all that gloomy."

Vaughn stood up "So I am gloomy?"

"Vaughn you know what I meant."

"Do I?"

Skye's expression softened "Vaughn…..are you, are you jealous?"

Vaughn punched the tree "Who the hell would be jealous of a pansy like you! I don't want some rich bimbo fawning all over me!"

"Well if you're going to be like that I think I'll accept their offer!"

"Go ahead see if i give a damn."

"Fine!" true to his word he accepted the invitation and went with them a few days later. he looked at the window of what used to be his room before he got in the car. he looked one last time and saw his brother's sad gaze and Skye instantly wished he could take back everything he said to Vaughn. But it was too late he had lost his only remaining family member.
