A HariPo drabble

Note: The Harry Potter characters belong to J.K. Rowling, not me. This pairing was discovered by my twin, Morghen, so please give her a little mention if you write them! Thanks! It is one of many of Mew and Mor's Weird Pairings, most of which you may find in the M&MWP forum. Check out and join the forum FUN! Read, review, and enjoy!

For: Drabble Tag in the M&MWP forum. Pairing: Lavender Brown/Romilda Vane. Prompt: midnight.

It was just a fleeting thing, a silly thing. Lavender sometimes went downstairs to warm her toes by the fire in the common room, the only place left with any warmth in the castle any more. Yet each and every time, that dark-haired witch was there by the window, staring out as the moonlight poured in.

Lavender knew her name. It was hard not to know Romilda Vane, the girl who had once giggled over Harry Potter. But at night, Romilda became "Midnight Girl" to Lavender.

She looked so sad, staring out the window. Romilda never flinched when Lavender came down. She never even really acknowledged Lavender's arrival. She was always lost in her own little world, the world of the Midnight Girl.

A few times, Lavender had half a mind to open her mouth and say something. But as the weeks turned into months and the months felt ready to turn into a year, Lavender swallowed her impetus in the hopes that Romilda might say something first.

It was curious, all the things she wanted to tell the Midnight Girl, all the things she wanted to ask her. "Why do you come here?" "Don't you ever sleep?" "Why do you look so sad?" "Do you know you always look ready to disappear by the light of the Moon?"

Every night, the words would die on Lavender's lips.

She supposed it was odd, never talking to Romilda and yet never trying to avoid her. Lavender wished to offer Romilda some comfort—they all needed some in these dark days that could be their last—but Lavender could do nothing. She wasn't the comforting type.

Then Lavender didn't even have the chance anymore to comfort the girl, for she'd left for the safety of the Room of Requirement with her friends. Lavender wanted to kick herself. There were no second chances in life, not really.

And yet…Romilda turned up at the Room of Requirement days later with some friends of her own. She looked frightened but happier, safer.

Those nights of the Midnight Girl returned, though, in a way, for the room could make windows appear as desired, and Romilda conjured up a sill for herself once more.

Lavender felt lost, worse than before. She hadn't known what to say with no one around. Now she had absolutely no idea how to comfort the younger girl with everyone around! So Lavender took simply to making sure that no one ever caught her staring. But there were no third chances in life, not really.

Of course, Lavender hated that thought, because she was one of the first to go. Her only wish was fulfilled, though, because at least she didn't die seeing the face of her murderer. She died seeing the face of her Midnight Girl, and she felt ready to die at last knowing that her Midnight Girl wouldn't be sad any longer, not after this war.

Hmm. I guess it was more one-sided admiration than anything else… I have issues as to whether Lav died or not, though I'll occasionally entertain the idea. As to why Romilda couldn't sleep? Most likely because barely anyone could sleep in the '97-'98 school year. I just really liked the idea of "Midnight Girl…" I could almost see myself doing something more with that idea in the future… Hmm…

Thanks for reading and please review!
