Family Ties

There is more than blood that equals family.

In the far future Rex is alone in his room. Old, battered photographs in pretty ornate frames are set on his desk. His old friends Max and Zoë feature in most of the photographs. He has new friends, of course. They fail to match the friendships of his past.

Max was his surrogate brother. Max's family was partly Rex's family. They lived together, ate together and spent most of their days together. They were too close to be simply best friends. They were something that no words could ever be powerful enough to describe.

They shared too much for their relationship to be matched.

Zoë was farther away. She stood on the outside. She would never have understood what Rex and Max shared. She would never have been able to be a part of that. Instead, she was hope. She was the hopes that he had of the future and the promise of happiness.

She was meant to be much more than what she ultimately remained; a friend.

However, Rex isn't concerned with them today. His attention is fixated on a particularly old photograph. It's his most prized possession.

The photograph is all that he has left of Dr. Owen. The time that they had to spend together had been spent mostly apart. They had been meant to have countless memories of their own. He was supposed to have had too many memories to miss him but what they had wasn't enough.

Now, he will never see his father again.

Author's Note: Ah, this piece… I could have finished this with almost a full day to spare… Also, I was very sad and feeling vulnerable when I started this. That's why the beginning is much better than the end. As an emotional writer I could kick myself for the end but I feel like I've run all of my emptiness, well, empty. Anyway, thank you for reading. I hope that you enjoyed this little piece. I apologise if you are at all dissatisfied.
