-Unhappy Anniversary-

The single occupant of the room slept soundly in the middle of the bed, exhausted after a few long days of work. His breathing was deep and he did not stir at the shadow that seemed to appear out of thin air.

The shadow leaned over the bed with a glint in its covered eyes, and pressed its mouth close to the blonds ear. "Happy valentines day, Mihael."

The blond sighed softly in his sleep, Matt's name ghosting his lips, but did not wake.

The redhead smiled sadly, placing a kiss to Mello's cheek. "See you." He let a hand hover over the blanket covered form, but did not dare attempt to touch, knowing it would only depress him. He glanced at the time and sighed. He did not have long, and so quickly did one last thing before turning for the door and vanishing once more.

Minutes later, groggy blue eyes slowly fluttered open. They settled on the nightstand on the other side of the bed and for long moments he was silent. The picture frame that had long since cracked, that he always kept face down, was once again upright and smiling at him.

Every year since Matt had disappeared, the picture of them—laughing and together and happy—ended face up before he woke.

Furiously scrubbing his eyes of sleep, and other things, Mello sat up, glancing around the room. There was never anything other than the faint feeling of having been watched, and no clues as to who or what upturned the photo; this year was no different.

"Happy valentines, Matty." and Mello got up to face the day alone.

AN: so technically I am not late for Valentines day, MelMat can tell you, as I sent this to her via text at 8am V-day on the way to dentist. Perhaps that is why this is a little morose instead of a happy drable?

As for the title, I was reminded of a Vitamin C song of the same name that I have liked since I was in middle school.. *shrug* Very loose relation. Lyrics have nothing to do with this really for once XD
