Previously…
(Jasper's POV)
I finally reached James and Victoria's apartment at the opposite end of the hall and anxiously began banging on the front door.
'Come on! Open!' I pressed as I began to pace back and forth, tugging at my curls from the roots before I stopped in front of the door again and continued to persistently bang on it relentlessly. 'God damnit! Open up the damn -'
The front door was pulled open mid-knock and Victoria stood there with a look of surprise and befuddlement.
"Jasper? What's wrong? Is everything okay?" She asked in alarm as she took in my disheveled appearance at the very same time that Rosalie stepped up behind Victoria.
I shook my head, slightly out of breath, but my adrenaline was pumping too hard for me to care or take notice. "No, everything's not okay! Where's James? I need to speak with him immediately! Bella's -"
"Jasper?" A soft, yet worried voice broke out from inside of the apartment and appeared from around the corner.
Bella.
Chapter 18
(Bella's POV)
The sound of a frantic banging on the door brought the three of us and our conversation to a startled halt. We all exchanged a glance before turning to look back over towards the door as the insistent knocking began again. We were told to take precautions with any unscheduled visitors, so we did not jump to answer the door right away.
"Are you expecting someone, Vic?" Rose asked her.
Victoria shook her head, leaning forward to place her glass of orange juice down next to her plate of eggs. "No, I've only spoken to you two and James since last night and I highly doubt that James would be knocking like that, let alone at all, to get into his own house."
The two girls both simultaneously looked in my direction as the knocking continued. "Bella?" Rose asked.
I pursed my lips, shaking my head. "The two of you are the only ones who know that I'm here – aside from Jasper, who I left a note for since he was still sleeping when I left earlier." I answered.
We silently regarded each other, coming to an understanding that we should see who it is, but to be cautious about it.
Victoria rose from her seat. "I'll go and see who it is; Bella, you stay here." She instructed, leaving no room for argument before she made her way around the dining room table and headed down the long hallway that led to the front door.
Once Vicky turned the corner, Rose stood from her seat as well, and silently tip-toed over to the corner, where she peered around it and down the hallway after her.
I stood from my seat, my palms sweating as I held my breath, waiting to see who lay on the other side of the door. They were still knocking frantically and I couldn't help but fear that it was Alec, come to take me away again. I began to tremble slightly at the thought, gripping the ledge of the table to steady myself.
The persistent banging began once again, only to come to a stop mid-knock when Victoria opened the door. I couldn't see what was happening, wanting to stay out of immediate sight if I could help it, but I could hear Victoria as she greeted the mystery visitor.
"Jasper? What's wrong? Is everything okay?" I heard Vic ask in alarm.
Rose's body seemed to lose some of the tension that it once held as she turned her head to look back at me. "It's just Jasper, but he looks like something's wrong." She informed me.
Jasper? What is he doing here? And what's wrong?
I immediately made my way across the dining room and stopped at the beginning of the long hall way, taking in my first glimpse of Jasper. His honey blonde hair was in a messy disarray on his head, clearly uncombed as if he had just rolled out of bed. He was shirtless, only a pair of loose-fitted jeans covering his body. On his feet, he wore his usual boots; the ones that he had brought home with him from the armed forces. His face was pale and he was out of breath as fear and panic shone in his every muscle.
Jasper shook his head, answering Vic's question, panting. "No, everything's not okay! Where's James? I need to speak with him immediately! Bella's -"
I stepped into his line of sight before he could finish his sentence. "Jasper?" I questioned him worriedly, causing his eyes to immediately fall on me.
What was going on? Why was he so frazzled? Did he do something to cause my soldier to look so out of sorts?
The second Jasper spotted me standing at the end of the hallway, the panic and fear in his eyes immediately faded, only to be replaced by what looked to me like relief, maybe a little anger and another emotion that I couldn't identify.
Without a word, Jasper charged into James and Vicky's apartment, heading straight toward me. His expression held more anger now, but I knew somehow that it wasn't so much at me. Relief, as well as the other one, were the dominant emotions. However, I was more confused than anything as to what was happening and why he was acting the way that he was as he gripped my upper arms, searching me over as if he were looking for signs of trauma.
"Jasper, what's going on?" I pressed again to the deeply frazzled soldier.
"You're okay," he breathed, reaching up to cup my jaw, tracing my cheek bone with his thumb so lightly that I could barely feel anything more than a tingling sensation.
I forced myself to ignore the butterflies flapping away in my stomach in favor of what had just happened since Jasper began frantically knocking on Vic and James's front door.
"Of course, I'm okay," I reassured him as he stared down at me while Vic and Rose watched. "What on Earth would make you think that I wasn't?"
His brows scrunched together and he broke our eye contact. "You were gone when I woke up; missing. I couldn't find you anywhere."
Just then, Rose waved her hand, getting our attention. "We're going to give you two some time alone to talk." She informed Jasper and I.
"We'll be in the kitchen if you need us." Vic agreed, waiting for my nod before disappearing with Rose around the corner.
My eye brows shot up. "Didn't you get my note?" I asked him.
He tilted his heat slightly to the side. "Note? What note?"
"The post-it note that I left near the coffee pot so that you wouldn't miss it. It said that I was going to be upstairs at Vicky's with Rose." I explained. "You didn't get it?"
He shook his head, "No. I looked everywhere for you or a note telling me where you were or at least something letting me know that you were okay. But I couldn't find anything." He paused before continuing. "I'm tellin' ya, darlin' – there was no note." His tone was a little sharper; the stress probably crashing down on him.
Just then, something yellow caught my eye on the back of his pant leg and I reached down to grab it. A smirk tugged at my lips once I saw what it was.
"Really Jasper? Are you sure that there was no note?" I quirked a brow at him, waving the yellow post-it in front of his face.
"Oh," was all he had to say before reaching up and taking the note from my hand. He held it up as he read it silently to himself before letting out a long sigh, running his opposite hand through his mess of tangled curls. "I'm sorry for freakin' out on you." He murmured. "It's just that I don't think I can go through it again."
"Go through what?" I asked, not understanding what he meant.
His eyes met mine, revealing the pain that he was undergoing at the present time. "Losing the woman I love."
I sucked in a breath, my heart skipped a beat and I began to feel faint as the butterflies came back again at full force. "W-What?" I stuttered.
He reached forward and took my hands with both of his, running his thumbs over my knuckles in a soothing manner. "Yes, Bella. I'm in love with you." He said, his eyes filled with such honesty and adoration that a lump formed in my throat and I was momentarily stunned.
The silence ticked on for several seconds before he finally spoke once again. "Darlin', I understand if this is too soon for you to say it back – after all, we only had our first real date last night – but I haven't been more sure of anything in my life and I want you to know how I feel and never have to doubt those feelings that I have for you. Also, you just went through a real traumatic time in your life with what happened while you were kidnapped and then what's happening now with waiting for them to catch him, so I completely understand if you haven't even had time to consider what your feelings are for me at the moment. Just know that I am here for you, my Belle, and know that I love you and that we'll go through all of this together. You're not alone and you never will be ever again." He vowed.
My eyes had filled with water only a quarter of the way through his speech and he released one of my hands to reach up and wipe the falling tears from my eyes.
"Thank you, Jasper," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion, "You're right; it's all happening so fast, and while I care for you more than I've ever cared about any man, I haven't had time to process my feelings and even think of us in the long run."
He nodded once, "I understand completely, sweet heart."
I gave him a small smile, "Thank you." I rose up on to the tips of my toes to place a chaste kiss on his soft lips, his stubble from not having shaved tickling my cheeks. I dropped back down on to my flats and grinned as I spoke, "But I can tell you this; I am most certainly falling hard in that direction."
Jasper's smile widened and he pressed his own kiss on my lips, removing them only to keep his forehead pressed to mine with his arms wrapped around my waist. "Why don't you go and say goodbye to Rose and Vic. We have an errand that we need to run."
I pulled my forehead away from his so that I could look at his face as I asked, "What errand?"
"You'll see," he answered cryptically. "I don't wanna tell ya in case you try ta back out."
I immediately didn't like the sound of this and I made it known by look that I gave him. However, I didn't say anything, deciding to go along with it for now as I made my way toward the kitchen, hugging both women goodbye before heading back to Jasper and leaving out the front door towards our apartment to finish getting ready for the day.
