Code Light Chapter 1:Introductions

The classroom was abuzz with rumors and nervous speech, whispering rumors about the new student, an Eleven. However, Lelouch did not care for these things and ignored the ramblings of the shallow-minded bigots. The recent events of the Shinjuku ghetto were worth contemplating, he would need to plan his next move carefully if he wished to utilize the terrorist cell against the Brittanian Empire. The tools had fallen so quickly into his lap. There was also the issue of confirming the identity of the Glasgow pilot. From the glimpse he caught of her, it was likely it was Kallen Stadtfeld. Her frequent absences would make sense if she a member of the terrorist group, but how did she become affiliated with them? Lelouch needed answers before he began plotting. The teacher cleared his throat.

"Class, this is our new student." His voice carried only the slightest traces of disdain, at least on the surface. "Please introduce yourself."

The student bowed and wrote his name on the board in Japanese.

"My name is Light Yagami. I am the son of Soichiro Yagami, Honorary Brittanian and Chief of the NPA. Please take care of me." His face seemed bright and friendly enough, but Lelouch could immediately sense something was off. Despite being the son of someone who'd become an Honorary Brittanian, he still flagrantly wrote in Japanese and used a traditional greeting, albeit translated. Light walked silently to the desk in front of Lelouch, the gaze of the class following him as he moved towards the back of the class. Their gazes locked momentarily, for some reason despite the color difference, it felt like he was looking into his own eyes.

Light bowed before the class and introduced himself. He put on his well-practiced façade of friendliness, but this school was the worst. Ever day, even before the invasion he watched a despicable world around him full of criminals. Now here he stood in the middle of the rotten apple. Students on the verge of xenophobia, brimming with hatred and an undeserved sense of entitlement. They were the enablers of those such as the emperor, who would have no power otherwise. These were the kind of people that made the world so rotten. He unconsciously divulged a small snippet of information about himself and sat down in front of a particular Brittanian with ebony hair and violet eyes. There was something about him that made Light feel uneasy. He seemed to wear the same mask, one of outward friendliness but secretly plotting on the inside. Intelligent, probably, but of course he would do nothing. For what would that Brittanian gain by usurping the system? If only there was something Light could do to stop the infection upon the world.

At lunch Light skirted the edges of the courtyard. The students at Ashford academy were mostly pureblood Brittanians. As such most were openly hostile, however a few were more curious, especially the female portion. Not wanting to draw the attention of his more disdainful peers he kept his distance, roaming under the arches. He heard a shriek as a group of three girls scattered yelling "Bee! Bee!" Well, two of them were screaming. The one with red hair had a much calmer demeanor. As the girls moved about, he noticed the violet-eyed boy begin to approach. Swiftly Light ducked behind a pillar, into the shadows.

"God, I hate this! I'm sick of acting like a freaking invalid!" Then there was a moment of silence as she noticed violet-eyes.

"Can I help you?"

"I want answers." Violet-eyes declared, for a second the red-haired girl wavered.

"Of course." Her tone was different now, far from her confrontational nature. It seemed robotic. What could have caused this?

"Were you the one piloting the Glasgow at Shinjuku?" Shinjuku? There had recently been a gas leak there, or so the media had reported. Frequently Brittanian news would censor anything unfavorable to the empire. However how would these two know the truth of the matter?

"Yes."

"Why terrorism?" So, the Shinjuku incident was the work of terrorists, one of which happened to be this girl. However Violet-eyes didn't appear to be her confederate the way the questioning was going. So who was he in all of this? Those eyes of his were plotting something to be sure.

"Because I'm Japanese. Though technically I'm half Brittanian."

"Half-blood? But why go so far?" Violet-eyes seemed a bit stunned. To be fair Light was puzzled himself, still he had many questions left that he hoped they could answer. Then suddenly it seemed like Kallen fell out of her trance-like state.

"Can I help you?" Light's eyes widened. So whatever trick Violet-eyes pulled erased memory of the event! This set Light off, what could he be doing that erases memory like that, and how could he use it so freely? Whatever it was could bring this world to justice, yet here it was being used merely to delve into someone's identity. Despicable.

"No, I got what I wanted." Violet-eyes turned to go before looking back and saying "Oh wait, just to be sure. Don't tell anyone about Shinjuku."

"What do you mean about Shinjuku?" The red-head asked accusingly, as Violet-eyes' eyes widened. Apparently his trick only works once on a person. No, Light couldn't rule out the possibility that there was a time duration and Violet-eyes just forgot how long it had been. Or perhaps there was a time limit in between the times a person was affected. Some other restriction? However, the most valuable info that Light gained now was that Violet-eyes himself was surprised that it did not work. So he was running around with a power he did not know everything about.

"Go back to class." Violet-eyes stated firmly. Was he attempting to use his power again, or merely attempting to use force of will?

"As soon as I get an answer to my question I will." She'd definitely reverted back to her old self. Violet-eyes seemed to tense up as his ploy failed. However he was saved as a voice called out from the window.

"Hey Lulu! Kallen! You know its time to head over to head over to the chem lab! You better get a move on!"

"Oh crap! It's my turn to set up for class!" Violet-eyes took off in a sprint. He played the part well, because if Light had not seen the roster, he never would have figured that he was lying. Also his ease in which he fell into that role meant he was quick thinking and intelligent. And Lulu? An obvious pet name of sort, but Violet-eyes would do because as much as he seemed to lie, it would not be very dignified to himself or his opponent to use the term 'Lulu'.

Stepping out from his hiding spot, he noticed something in the bush where the two had been standing. Crouching down, Light examined it. The cover said "Death Note" in white letters and as he flipped through the pages he saw they were blank. On the inside of the front cover there was writing. The human whose name is written in the Death Note shall die. Rather, morbid. Light had to hurry, he didn't wish to be the last one to class.

Lelouch let out a sigh of relief as he headed to chemistry. He could not believe the timing in which Milly had intervened. Now the Kallen issue had become top priority. Instead of banishing suspicions, she was even more wary of him! He would need to run more testing on his power. He strode into the chemistry lab confidently, if not a bit late. There was one lab station left... with Light. Reluctantly he took a breath and walked over attempting to be friendly, trying to sense what it was that was so off-putting. "Hi." Light greeted, seeming friendly enough.

"Hello." Lelouch stated in a flat manner. Then he saw what unnerved him so much, and practically chuckled himself. The uneasy feeling came from the fact that Light seemed to analyze everything he said, much like he did. A calculating mind lay beneath his friendly face, one that seemed to have a goal in mind. He would have to be careful of these sharp eyes when testing his powers and working towards the downfall of the Brittanian empire. Strange that he felt the need to be so secretive around someone who was proudly Japanese. It was Rivalz who interrupted his thoughts.

"Hey! Hope you can keep up with Lelouch! He's the sharpest kid in the class, even though he is a bit lazy." Damn, Rivalz! Just as he discovered a new possible threat, information about Lelouch was being divulged. But would Light take Rivalz statement for granted? He felt so paranoid about the whole ordeal, the problems just kept coming. The lab worksheet was passed out and Lelouch wrote his name on the paper. He caught Light glancing at it, even as he looked at Light's work. Unlike his own flowing and casual script, Light's was borderline calligraphy. Perfect kerning and spacing, this boy was machine. Perhaps a use of his power was in order to deflect suspicion before it started. Nipping it in the bud would probably keep Light from ever investigating him. He seemed too perceptive to throw off track later.

"Hey Light, could we talk after class?" Lelouch gave a smile as the rest of the class wondered what the genius would want with an Eleven.

"Sure, just let me pick something up beforehand." On the inside Lelouch laughed. Checkmate, Light. Your eyes are too perceptive to leave without blinders. My own eye will keep you from ever being a thorn in my side.

Lelouch saw Light walking down a corridor at the end of the day. No-one else was around, it was his move.

"Hey Light." He called. The two walked towards each other. It seemed like Light also had a reason to talk to him alone. But why?

"What is it?"

"If it isn't too personal, what's your reason for moving here? Something related to your father's work? I'm a bit interested in the justice force."

"I see. It's all right, according to my father there is confidential business that needs to be handled here. I was curious of you, myself. I heard rumors that you go off campus gambling." Really? Perhaps Rivalz had said something to him. Lelouch wasn't sure where it was going, but it didn't seem as though there was any suspicion into anything important. Now would be as good a time as any then.

"Only chess. It's a habit I'm trying to break. Anyway," Lelouch gestured flippantly, before beginning the command. He felt a rush inside. "Never write or speak my name. I am not very interesting, and we don't get along well." That should suffice. Not writing or speaking his name may have been a bit overboard. Keeping an aloof hostility would separate them, other people at the school wouldn't expect them to associate, so nothing would be out of place. Turning his back he walked away. Why would he talk to Light, they didn't like each other.

Light stood dazed, wondering what he was doing. Taking a moment to compose himself, he put himself in his pocket. I am going to meet with Lelouch Lamperouge. He has some method that will automatically compel a listener to do as he demands. It also appears that those under the influence of his commands lose memory of the time they spend under his power. Because of this I have put a recording device in my pocket and I will activate it any time I see Lelouch. If I am ever feeling dazed I will check the tape. It seemed a bit odd, but it was in his own handwriting and he did remember earlier in the day between Lelouch and Kallen. It didn't seem like such a model student could do such a thing. After removing the recorder from his pocket and listening to the command, it made more sense. He chuckled, Lelouch thought him a threat but underestimated him. "All according to plan." Light said with a smirk, laughing alone in the hallway.

A/N-10-5-14 Rewrite done. I said I wouldn't until I finished, but it looks like I lied. I'm trying to make Lelouch's super awkward impulsive geass of Light less odd.
