Chapter Thirteen
Plans Going Wrong
"So," Rosalie plonked herself down next to her younger brother. "I'm not even going to insult yours and my intelligence by asking if you ask Bella, so I'm just going to skip straight to my follow-up question: How much do you like her?"
Edward looked up, surprised, from his book; Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver. He caught her eye and sighed; resigned to the fact that he couldn't wriggle out of this one. "A lot." He admitted, folding the page over in his book.
"And how much is 'a lot' exactly?" Rosalie tucked her feet up underneath her as she fully turned to face him.
"A whole lot..." Edward sighed. "But we're from two different wor-"
"Don't try and give me that load of crap." Rose interrupted, holding up one finger. "You and I both know that Bella is a totally normal person with a totally abnormal career."
"I know, but the rest of the world doesn't get that," He pointed out. "We'd never be able to have a normal relationship."
"That's like saying 'I could make this cake and be super happy with it, but it's a really difficult recipe so I probably won't even try'." She glared at her brother. "And that is not the attitude."
"Ooh, I could do with some cake right now..." Jasper joined them in Edward's room of the hotel that they had barely stayed in during their visit.
"Oi, don't change the subject." Rosalie switched her evil look to her twin.
"What exactly is the subject?" The blonde male sat down on the other side of Edward.
"Edward's obvious undying love for Bella." Rose said simply.
Said male rolled his eyes. "It's hardly 'undying'. I'll get over it..."
"I don't blame you, dude," Jasper clapped him on the shoulder. "Bella is a goddess. But Alice is more my type..." He trailed off, staring into space.
"Since when?!" Rosalie said. "I get that she's adorable, but you've been in love with Bella for years!"
"Well, I thought I'd be a good big brother and step down, considering he got with her at that party last week." Jasper grinned.
"They what?!" Rosalie screeched at the same time that Edward yelled:
"I what?!"
Jasper seemed confused by his brother's reaction. "The last time I saw you that evening, you were heading upstairs with a brunette. At first, I only saw the back of her head, but then, a few hours later, I saw Bella emerge from the bedroom I had seen you two enter earlier. If I wasn't so drunk, I probably would have stopped her from leaving the party, because you know how much I love - sorry; loved - but I seemed incapable of getting off the couch."
Rosalie and Edward just blinked at their brother.
"...Are you saying...I slept with Bella Swan that night?" Edward clarified. "And you don't think I'd remember something like that?!"
"Uh," Jasper chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "You were totally wasted. You wouldn't be able to remember if blood-sucking vampires had invaded the house and killed everyone except us three."
"Oh...great." Edward turned white.
Rosalie hadn't said anything since her intial outburst, and she was starting to shake violently.
"Rose?" Jasper noticed her quivering and leaned over Edward to place his hands on her shoulders. "Are you okay?"
The blonde female simply shook her head; her eyes as wide as dinner plates.
"Edward," She managed to choke out. "Do you carry protection with you?"
The boy in question blushed slightly, despite the tense situation. "Of course."
"Did you have protection with you that night?"
Edward thought deeply back to that night; he drew a blank. "I can't remember anything about that party...but I don't see why not."
"Okay-" Jasper started, but Edward wasn't finished.
"However, if I was as drunk as you say I was, and I was seriously about to-" He paused, his face turning even redder. "sleep with Bella," He whispered those three words. "It's possible that I forgot to use it..."
"Rose," Jasper scrunched his nose. "Why did you ask about protection?"
Rosalie threw all caution to the wind and decided to just jump. "I'm sorry, Bells..." She whispered, then cleared her throat and looked her brothers in the eye. "Bella's pregnant."
.
"Daddy, I'm home!" Bella sang as she skipped into her hallway.
"Bells, it's like two in the morning." Alice pointed out, joining her. "He's either sleeping, or on the night shift."
"Oh crap, yeah." Bella giggled. "Dang," She dropped her bags onto the floor. "I'm hungry." She hurtled into the kitchen.
"Do you think Bella got enough sleep on the plane?" Jasper laughed, suppressing a yawn as he slammed the door of the Swan house.
"Definitely," Alice rolled her eyes. "She went to sleep pretty much as soon as we finished our talk."
"Uh, guys," Bella walked back out of the kitchen and into the hall, holding a piece of paper. "My dad had to go out of town for a few days. We have the place to ourselves."
"Holla!" Alice punched the air and elongated the last syllable.
"My words exactly."
