Chapter One

Draco Malfoy was not happy to go back to Hogwarts this year. The war was over and he knew that his last year at Hogwarts would be a living hell. People were angry with him because of his family's part in the war. Of course he knew they would be, it was to be expected. After all, it was his father that assisted Voldemort to destroy a large portion of the wizarding world. He was going back to Hogwarts not for his sake, but for his mothers sake.

However, what most people didn't know was that Draco never wanted any of that. In fact if he could have, he wouldn't have been in the war at all. The only reason he did was his for his family's survival alone. He just wanted to get out alive. That was his only goal. How could people blame him for that? Wasn't that what they were all trying to do? His father was the servant of the Dark Lord and Draco was simply caught in the line of fire. He never wished for it to happen but it did. Luckily for him, the Ministry pardoned him and his mother, but his father was currently in Azkaban, which everyone knew. But what most people didn't know about them was that they had a family secret.

They had werewolf in their blood.

When he was younger his mother taught him lessons of their family history in their library, it was required of every Malfoy to know of their honorable heritage. A few centuries ago in the 1800's one of his ancestors on his mother's side named Syrian Black was bitten by a werewolf. There are many kinds of species of werewolves but this particular kind of werewolf that had bitten his ancestor was rare. Usually, this news alone would have made any wizard back then want to commit suicide. There were no potions or enchantments in that time period to help the bitten, but his ancestor was a powerful wizard. Instead of letting the wolf rule him, he learned how to rule the wolf. Unlike most werewolves, Syrian gained the ability to phase into the wolf whenever he wanted to and was able to simultaneously still be aware of who he was and what he was doing when in wolf form. There was peace for a time and his ancestor Syrian had a family of his own, luckily for his children only a few of them had the werewolf gene. But as time grew on it wasn't a popular to be rumored as a werewolf. Other powerful wizards thought the Blacks were just as dangerous as the wild werewolves, blaming them for the recent werewolf attacks on villages and livestock. The Black's decided it wasn't safe to have other's know of their wolf blood. They had no choice but to keep their identities a secret and move to a new city, were in they began to build their fortune. Years later, his mother met his father. They built the Malfoy Manor and now, to this day, it is where Draco and his mother live.

Malfoy hadn't thought much of his wolf blood until he was about sixteen. One day he remembered and his father had gotten into a heated argument about Draco's future and his anger grew out of control. It was the first time he had ever felt the wolf inside him. It frightened him mostly since he had never phased into his wolf form. But when his father saw the wolf start to form in his eyes he was frightened, and never crossed Draco again. After that Draco hadn't felt his wolf much at all. He had to keep his anger in check and more importantly, his emotions. But over time with the help of his mother, he learned how to control his temper and eventually he was almost able to forget about his wolf blood. His mother taught him how to phase in and out of the wolf form if he ever had to use it in dire circumstances. Luckily for him, he never had to phase in the war. Of course there had to be many others like Draco; for all he knew anyone at Hogwarts could be one. It was however still not respectable to have werewolf blood, so most wizards like him still kept their werewolf lineage a secret.

"Alright Draco do you have all of your things? Do you have your books? Cloaks? Potion ingredients?" Narcissa Malfoy fussed, going through his things pulling Draco out of his thoughts.

Draco nodded carelessly, "Yes mum you've asked about fifty times already."

His mother straightened his jacket smoothing it out and looked up lovingly at him, "This is the last time I get to see you off to school."

He rolled his eyes, "I think that fact is a good thing."

She said nothing for a moment then lowered her voice in a serious tone.

"Look Draco I know it's hard for you to go back to school. I blame your father and I for this, but at least try to have a little fun. It's your last year and it could be so exciting. It's the only way you'll get a respectable job and you still have your friends Blasie, Crabbe, and Goyle to keep you company. If anyone tries to judge you on what has-"

"Mum, I don't care what they think. I'll be fine." He said looking away from her into the sea of students all around. As he scanned the crowd a certain girl caught his attention.

Draco's eye's locked on a beautiful girl with dark brown curls that fell down her back. She had light skin with chocolate brown eyes to match her hair. Her body was lean and fit, smaller boned and petite than most. He felt his wolf stir which put him on edge. He hadn't felt his wolf in a long time; so long he hadn't remembered at time that he had last felt it. But abruptly it came almost overwhelmingly as he figured out the girl he was staring at was none other than Hermione Granger. He tensed up as he realized who she was. She seemed to be looking for someone.

Suddenly Granger's eyes found his.

He froze; he felt couldn't breathe or speak. He got a sudden urge to walk over to her but suppressed his crazed desire to be close to her.

It was then Weasel came into sight and greeted her wrapping his arms around her. Hermione's eyes left him being distracted and turned to face Weasely.

Uncontrollably he felt a growl come out from him.

He froze again shocked at his jealously.

"Draco?" His mother questioned looking at him with deep concern, "Draco what is it?"

He kept his eyes on Granger as he watched her get pulled away into the crowd of people. His gazed stayed on her until she was out sight. He was finally able to tare his eyes away from her.

"Draco?" His mother said pestering him again.

"It was nothing mum," Draco said trying to cover his reaction to seeing Granger.

His mother wasn't buying it, "Draco you just growled that is not normal for you. What did you see?"

He decided to tell her, "It was Hermione Granger."

His mother's face grew in surprise, "What about her?"

"My wolf likes her," Draco said still trying to shake the feeling off.

Mrs. Malfoy's eyes grew wide, "Draco, you don't think-"

"It was probably nothing mum." He said cutting her off, trying to prevent her from worrying.

She didn't respond, lost in deep thought.

"I should get on the train," He said as the whistle sounded.

His mum nodded silently, "I love you sweet heart."

His mother started to tear up as he rolled his eyes at her, she did this every time. He none the less wrapped his arms around her giving her a hug goodbye.

"Goodbye mum, I love you to," He said with a tight squeeze.

He let go and gave her a handsome smile and wink.

He turned away from her walking quickly to the departing train.

"Say hello to Pansy for me!" His mother called.

Hermione on the other hand couldn't be happier to go back to Hogwarts. She could use some normalcy after everything that they went through the past year. She wanted more than anything to finish her schooling. It had been her plan to finish her schooling all along. She had tried to convince Harry and Ron to come back with her with a little help from Mrs. Weasely, but it was all in vain. Harry and Ron told everyone that they wouldn't be returning to Hogwarts for their final year. They already had received job offers at the ministry and they didn't seem to see the point of returning to school. Although Hermione was also offered a job at the ministry, she informed them that she wanted to finish her schooling. It was very important to her that she finish her final year of school along with her N.E.W.E.T.S. even if her best friends wouldn't be there with her.

Hermione entered the platform alone having just said goodbye to her parents. She was glad to have them back into her life, granted they were furious that she had made them forget her but she did what she had to do. She was just glad that they were able to remember her once more. They forgave her of course, they weren't about to lose their only daughter again.

She had to admit she was sad that Harry and Ron wouldn't be there with her. It was starting to hit her as she walked to the train station that she would be going alone. She knew it was the right decision for her but she still felt a tug at her heart.

Hermione just started to walk over to board the train when she felt someone watching her. She paused for a moment and looked toward the source.

She wasn't prepared for what she saw.

It was Draco Malfoy. His eyes were locked on hers with a fire. He looked absolutely stunning. His blonde messy hair contrasted with his dark grey eyes as they contained a different aura than ever before. His body about twice as big with muscle than the last time she saw him. Hermione stood entranced, since when did Malfoy hold a mysterious air about him? She didn't know why but she couldn't move or even look away from him. He seemed to be in the same position as she. He just stood there, staring right back at her.

It was then she felt as if there was another persons' presence in her mind. Hermione instantly put up a wall in defense of the foreign mind. She suddenly felt frightened and began to come back to her senses.

Suddenly she felt someone grab her arm making her forget about Malfoy.

"Hermione!" A very familiar voice said. She turned to face the one and only Ronald Weasely.

Her heart soared, "Ron?!" She said in excitement as she wrapped her arms around him, "What are you doing here?" She asked in surprise.

He gave her a smile as he too wrapped his arms around her, "What you think we'd let you go off to Hogwarts for your final year without a proper goodbye?"

"We?" Hermione asked, but her question was already as she looked over Ron's shoulder to see Harry and Ginny smiling at them.

"Harry! Ginny!" She said happy to see him as she left Ron to give Harry a hug as well.

"We couldn't miss this," Harry said as he hugged Hermione.

"Plus someone had to drop me off," Ginny said with a smile, "Looks like it's just gonna' be us girls for a while."

"You're coming?" Hermione said surprised.

Ginny looked at her like she grew two head, "Are you kidding? You think my mum would let me drop out of school with a year left? Please, the only reason she let my older brothers get away with it was because they gave her no choice, plus I wanted to finish out my last year."

"Yeah yeah quit your complaining," Ron said ruffling up his sister's hair as Ginny swatted his arm away.

It was then the loud whistle blew signaling that the Hogwarts train would be leaving soon.

"Thank you so much for seeing me off," Hermione said hugging the two again, "I'll miss you two."

"Hey don't miss us to much, you'll be coming back to us for Christmas before you know it," Harry said with a wink.

Harry then turned to say goodbye to Ginny as Ron and Hermione were left to face each other.

"I'll miss you too Hermione," Ron said looking at her longingly as he pulled her in for another hug.

Hermione hugged him back sad to see him hurting. Ron didn't want Hermione to return to school, which made them fight a lot over the summer. So much in fact, that it left them without talking to one another for two weeks. After the two were forced back into the same quarters by Harry, they were finally able to get over their fight. But they decided that it was best that they take a break from their relationship for now. It was too hard for Hermione to have a boyfriend so far away and she really needed to concentrate on her studies if she wanted to do well on her N.E.W.E.T.S. So they mutually agreed to be just friends for now. But it seemed to be a lot harder said than done.

"I'll see you soon Ron," Hermione said.

"Promise you'll write?" Ron said still holding her.

Hermione smiled into his shoulder, "Promise."

He pulled away giving her a sweet kiss on the cheek, "Alright go on before I make you stay," He said with a smile.

Hermione smiled back at him.

Finally as she and Ginny said their last goodbyes. They gathered up their things and turned to get onto the train. She gave one last wave to them both as Ginny was the first to get on the train.

"Stay out of trouble," Hermione called half teasing.

"We will!" She heard Harry shout.

"Yeah right," Ginny mumbled to Hermione under her breath.

Hermione gave them one last wave before she boarded the train.

The train gave its last whistle signaling its final warning as the train started to move toward its final destination. Hogwarts.

Later on the train Draco sat in one of the Slytherin compartments with his friends and girlfriend. He was still thinking about Granger. Why did he start to feel his wolf again after all this time? What hold could she possibly have on him or even his wolf form? His mother obviously thought something was going on; she just didn't want to worry him. He made up his mind that he was going to ask her about it later. He had too much on his plate too have to worry about his wolf coming back.

"Draco I've missed you," Pansy said as she pulled his attention away from the window.

"Give him a break Pansy the last time you saw him was only two days ago," Blaise said over the grunts and yells. Blaise was trying to hold off on the wrestling of Crabbe, Goyle and a few other Slytherins seemed to be in.

"Yeah me to," Draco said robotically not really meaning it. Draco did like Pansy; she was his girlfriend after all. But for some reason today he couldn't seem to stand her. It wasn't Pansy; she was acting like she always had. Draco just couldn't stand her trying to get closer to him and acting clingy.

"My mother told me to say hello to you," Draco said dully trying to change the conversation.

Pansy lit up at that, "Oh I absolutely adore your mother."

"She's pretty fond of you to." He said, although I don't know why he thought to himself.

"Draco why don't we go somewhere where there isn't a bunch of stupid Slytherins acting like animals," Pansy said louder on purpose so the others would hear her.

"You know what that's a fabulous idea!" Crabbe said with a smile as he held down Goyle.

"Yeah why don't you leave now and join the other girls Pansy," Blaise said trying to get rid of her.

Pansy gave an astounded look as she turned to Malfoy.

"Come on Draco were leaving," She puffed standing up.

"You go on ahead I think I want to stay here," He said coolly.

Pansy gave him a cruel look, "I haven't seen you practically all summer and now you don't even want to spend some time with me?"

Draco gave a glare, "I'm not really interested in you bossing me around. I will stay or go when I choose."

"Fine," Pansy said, "I'll be back later."

With that she slammed the compartment door shut and stomped away.

"Finally!" Blaise said groaning, getting back onto his seat and off the floor, "Why do you even date that girl?" He questioned shaking his head.

"No kidding Draco she's a nightmare, even you can see that," Crabbe said agreeing still wrestling with Goyle.

Draco rolled his eyes, "She's not that bad."

"Yeah which is why even you couldn't stand her today," Blaise pointed out.

Draco couldn't deny that.

"I think I'm going to get some fresh air," Draco said getting up stepping over Crabbe.

He opened and closed the sliding door smoothly as he paused for a moment. What was going on with him? Was he really not into Pansy anymore? He shook the feeling off as he went north to look for an empty compartment.

He found one not too far away, he knocked and peaked into it looking to make sure it was vacant. Once he saw no one was in he made himself comfortable wanting to be alone.

He took a few steps and suddenly felt his wolf again. Draco couldn't understand why he could suddenly feel it so strongly. He had never been able to sense it like this before like this.

But it all made sense when someone barged into his compartment door.

HPHPHPHPHPHPHPHPHPHPHPHPHPHP

Hermione wasn't watching where so was going when she entered the Slytherin compartments. Ginny had gone to go talk to the Prefects leaving her alone by herself. That's when he found her. Hermione was trying to escape the one and only Cormac Mclaggen and his all 'perfect charm'. He had been trying to corner Hermione into liking him since he learned that Ron and her were no longer officially together. He spotted her alone in the crowd and tried to call to her but she gave him the slip. She had barley gotten away from him when she started walking quickly away not really caring which direction she went.

"Hermione? Hermione where are you?" Cormac voice rang out calling to her.

Crap he's closer than I thought! She thought to herself. She instantly reached for the first door handle she could get to. She quickly slide the door open and locked the door. She heard Cormac's footsteps get closer she held her breath as she saw his shadow. But he passed the door and went down the opposite way that he came.

Hermione let out a sigh of relief.

"Hiding from someone?" She heard a handsome voice speak from behind her.

Hermione jumped at the sound clutching her chest in panic reaching for her wand pointing it at the source of the voice.

It was Malfoy of course; his stunning face was staring at her with interest.

Hermione could barely speak, "You scared me," She said raggedly still trying to catch her breath.

Malfoy had to control his wolf from jumping out of his skin. Her smell was enchanting and it filled the room within a matter of seconds. He had to gain his composure before he gave himself away. He took a big breath and slipped on a mask.

Hermione on the other hand wasn't as happy to see him. She starred at him almost unbelievably. She couldn't believe that Malfoy would choose to come back to Hogwarts. Didn't he know that we all hated him? Doesn't he know what he has done to thousands of families? Didn't he know who he was supporting? Didn't he know it was his aunt that tortured her in his own house? Her hatred for him grew as she remembered the word mudblood etched on her arm. In that moment, she wanted to hurt him. She wanted to make him feel pain like she did.

"Yeah you're kinda scaring me too with that wand still pointed at my face," Malfoy said trying to suppress his wolf. Didn't the stupid animal know that Granger face was full of disgust?

Hermione glared at him not lowering her wand, "Can you blame me?"

Malfoy's eyes narrowed, "I guess not."

She felt herself come back to her senses, realizing that even if she were to hurt him. It wouldn't make her feel any better. Finally, she lowered her wand slowly bringing it back to her side. But she kept it in tightly secure in her hand.

She gave him one last look of disgust as she turned around toward the door. She decided that she would definitely take Cormac over Malfoy. She couldn't stand to even be near him.

As she turned for the door a panic came over Malfoy as his wolf seemed to scream at him to do something. For a moment he thought he would let her go, it was obvious that she hated him. But his wolf seemed to take over his body.

Instantly Malfoy took out his wand and locked the door.

Hermione heard the door lock as her eyes widened at the door handle. She tried to open it whispering Aholahmora, but even after that it wouldn't budge. She turned slowly toward Malfoy her eyes full of anger.

"Unlock the door Malfoy," She said.

Malfoy was surprised at how much hatred she had for him. Harry himself didn't hold this big of a grudge against him.

"No," He said.

Her eyes grew dark, "I'm not going to ask again, unlock the door."

Suddenly a knock at the door made them both jump.

Malfoy sighed loudly as he unwillingly unlocked the door as it opened to reveal the trolly lady.

She gave them a big smile, "Anything off the Trolly my dears?"

Hermione did her best to put on a fake smile, "No thank you we're fine."

"Alright, I'll be at the front if you change your minds," She said sweetly not noticing that she had just barged into an argument.

"You know I was just leaving to head up there myself, Why don't I don't I join you?" Hermione said sweetly.

The older women beamed, "I could use someone to open the doors for me, thank you young lady."

Hermione smiled, "It would be my pleasure."

Hermione walked out of the compartment and looked back at Malfoy. To her surprise she found that his face was hurt. It almost made her sorry for being so vile toward him. But almost didn't quite cut it.

"Malfoy," She said nodding goodbye.

"Granger," He said back.

With that Hermione closed the compartment door and headed back toward the front with the older women. She shivered to think of what would have happened if the women hadn't came. What in the world just happened?

Malfoy stared at the compartment door that Granger had just closed as his hand clenched in anger. Why in the world did he just do that? What was he going to do? Have a heart to heart with Granger and she would forgive him just like that? He stopped himself. The better question is why did he care.

His wolf was still as he felt himself become cold.

This was going to be a long year.
