He found her in a corridor. He couldn't tell which, because all the paintings seemed to have fled. It was like all the corridors at Hogwarts now: a battlefield. No longer a school. No longer a home. And yet, with Luna standing in front of him, Neville could not help but remember why he was there. Why he was fighting. Hogwarts was his home.
She had just won a battle along with a couple of Ravenclaw students Neville didn't know. They stood there, panting, a Death Eater laying unconscious on the ground. Neville felt the anger rising inside him. Nothing should have caused Luna to have to fight like that. Luna was not a warrior. She was peaceful.
"Luna!" he called, just as she and the two other girls were turning to go. She spun around, saw him, smiled. Just like that, his anger disappeared.
"I'll be right after you," she called to her friends. When they left she turned around, walked toward him. "What are you doing here?" Not unkindly. She was happy. Worried, but happy. Happy to see him. He couldn't help noticing the way her eyes still shone, even in the middle of the war. She was his light in this war. He couldn't help but smile. Just seeing her gave him hope.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I- I just couldn't let it go unsaid," he began. "You know- just in case we die⦠Luna, I'm mad for you. I'm crazy about you. Honestly, I just-"
At that moment, Luna threw her arms around him and kissed him straight on the lips. He kissed her back enthusiastically, quickly overcoming his surprise. Their lips parted slightly, tongues slipping gently in. Neither of them had any idea how long the it lasted. It could have been seconds, minutes or hours until they finally parted lips.
"I have to go," Luna said. "There's a fight still unwon." Neville nodded solemnly and kissed her, this time a quick but lingering touch of their lips.
"I love you," she said as she turned to leave.
"I love you too."
Neville watched as she hurried down the corridor, turned the corner and disappeared. Then he turned around and went back to the battle, hoping that he would see her again.
