A/N: Hello, it's me...(I'm so sorry, I couldn't resist LOL)
Seriously, though. It's been a while since I've written anything and mostly because I've been completely blocked or because LIFE. So, I've decided to bring this story to a close. I know there's so much that can still happen between our ladies but, really, with the way things are going as far as my writing, I have no time anymore. Maybe I'll do ficlets or a sequel to this but as of now, that's all she wrote as they say. I'm thankful to all of you that reviewed and followed this, story and for your patience. I hope you enjoy this tiny chapter. It's a sweet, cheesy one and HOPEFULLY a good closing to this fic :)
Megan and Kate had spoken very little after lunch with Lacy. New cases and paperwork had prevented them from making plans for the evening. But after a chance encounter in the women's locker room later in the afternoon, the two decided that they would be spending a relaxing night together at Kate's apartment. They needed it after that morning with Todd. He was going to struggle with the idea of their relationship but he would eventually get over it and probably never speak of it again. That's just the kind of person he was. A few questions still lingered in the back of their minds though — Megan's especially.
"So why are you dating me, Kate?"
The blonde leaned back on her chair and chuckled, a questioning but amused look on her face. "What?"
"You heard me." Megan replied while pushing her plate aside. "Now answer me."
Much to the delight of the redhead's impatience, Kate allowed herself a few more seconds to finish chewing her food and to think about the question. They'd briefly discussed the topic early on in their relationship; she remembered because it had been on the day that she, Megan, and Lacey had spent the day together. At one point, she had asked the redhead with how many women she'd been involved and the woman answered honestly, in addition to telling her why she was pursuing this relationship.
"First off, had it not been for those... dreams I don't think I would have ever allowed myself to acknowledge how I felt about you."
"And how did you feel about me?"
"I was definitely attracted to you on a superficial level; you're a successful, beautiful, graceful and stylish woman, Megan. Half of the staff fears you and the other half want to be you, especially the younger crowd."
"Good to know," Megan commented.
"But back to your question," Kate continued. "I've always cared about you. It was difficult seeing you struggle through those first few months at the MEO, adjusting to this new career and life; your custody battle with Todd; my dating him." She paused, a rueful smile on her face. "I should have reached out to you but you weren't exactly open to friendships."
"Yeah, well, you wore me down and, look, we're dating now."
"Remarkable progress, don't you think?" Kate joked. A soft smile tugged at the corners of Megan's lip. "I like you, Megan." She raised her hand and voice slightly at the redhead's roll of the eyes. "Yes, I know that sounds childish but I really likeyou; everything that is Megan Hunt. Your stubbornness and impatience; your passion and dedication." The blonde's tone softened as she reached for Megan's hand. "Your vulnerability."
Interlocking their fingers, the other woman stated in mock surprise, "The brilliant morgue queen vulnerable? Oh my. My reputation will be ruined if word gets out," she said quietly.
Kate slid forward on her chair, pulled Megan toward her, and then kissed her cheek. "Funny." At that, the redhead raised an eyebrow. "Well, not necessarily 'Haha' funny but you have a very dry sense of humor."
Megan shrugged. "I have my moments."
"Cocky."
"I believe you're confusing cockiness with confidence."
"A smartass."
The redhead grinned proudly then frowned when Kate went silent. "Anything else?"
"Impatient."
"Hey, you can't blame me for wanting things done quickly and efficiently."
Kate smirked then quirked a brow. "Does that include...?" She tilted Megan's head up slightly then kissed her, very slowly, ending the kiss with a gentle nip at her lips. And although she tried to hide it, the woman was clearly left breathless.
"Except that," Megan replied, keeping her eyes closed. She nuzzled Kate's cheek, jawline, and finally came to a rest on her shoulder. "What else?"
"You're very cute, you know? And sweet." The blonde laid a quick kiss on Megan's forehead, hesitating before continuing. "Also, very romantic and…loving."
It was silent for a second, and then Megan spoke. "Isn't that what you're supposed to do with the people you love?"
There was that fluttering in Kate's chest. "Well, that depends; do you love me?" Kate chuckled, nervously. More so when Megan lifted her head off her shoulder, looking into her eyes, and didn't answer. Now she wasn't sure if she wanted to hear the answer.
Whatever it may be.
"Well, you know," Megan replied with a nervous chuckle. "I…do."
"You do what?" the other woman asked, certain of what the redhead had just professed. Though she wanted to make sure.
"I mean, I know we've only been dating for all of two seconds…" The blonde interrupted her with quiet, shy laughter. But Megan carried on. "But I can honestly say that I am falling in love with you, Kate."
It wasn't too often that Megan let this vulnerable side of her be seen, let alone by people she was dating – not that she'd done much dating in the last few years – but she felt safe with Kate; physically and emotionally. There had always been something between them since she had arrived at the Medical Examiners Office but it had obviously been a matter of timing.
Kate let out a breathy chuckle then looked down to hide the blush that had crept up to her cheeks. "I see," she whispered, biting her lower lip.
Megan felt instant relief at the woman's positive reaction. It appeared her feelings were reciprocated. Hooking a finger under her chin, she tilted Kate's head up and kissed her gently. "So, now you know how head over heels I am over you, Dr. Murphy."
"'Head over heels,' huh?" the blonde teased. "All six inches of them?"
Megan couldn't have rolled her eyes any harder. "Would you just kiss me now, please?"
At that point, Kate couldn't stop giggling. Maybe it was the wine; maybe it was something else.
"As you wish, Dr. Hunt," she replied and then yanked Megan toward her. The other woman gasped then melted into the strong embrace and passionate kiss that followed. "And, by the way," Kate said in between kisses. "I love you too, Megan."
The End.
