Controversy

Chapter 6

The trio sat with their mouths wide open, trying to comprehend Jack's 'life story' as the Spirit of Winter finished talking. As implausible as it was, after months of daily ghost fighting, it wasn't that hard to believe that a boy drowned after saving his sister in the colonial times and got appointed as the Guardian of Fun by a man in the Moon, right? Who knows? Maybe if Danny's bad luck holds, someone else would just come up to him and tell him that his whole life is just a tv show produced for littler kids' entertainment. Danny internally sighed, maybe I should try and sleep more. The day's craziness was seriously getting to his head.

Jack finished the part where he defeated Pitch Black with rest of the Guardians of Childhood and looked up expectantly. Surprisingly, it was Tucker who started to speak.

"So you're telling me that, Santa Claus is real?"

"As real as I am." Danny thought that that wasn't really saying much.

"Dude," Tucker said to Danny, "I can't believe that your dad's actually right about this."

"Not anymore. My mom now holds that belief and dad's against it. Surprise surprise."

"No way, that must really suck. I mean-"

"Boys." Sam interrupted as Jack looked on between the two boys, amused. Sam turned to Jack with an apologetic look, "what the two idiots mean, is that we're sorry about your sister and we are glad that you trust us with your story."

Jealous that Sam's acting all polite and friendly to the spirit, Danny pouted and murmured, "That's not what I mean..."

Sam merely kicked him in the shin and sent him a glare. Danny looked to the side. Tucker resumed typing away on his device's screen.

"He's just being annoying, don't mind him."

Jack gave her a dazzling grin. "No one can beat me in that department. But hey, thanks, I needed to vent out anyway. It's not usual when someone mature can see me. I don't know what's up with this town, but I guess everyone believes everything here."

"Guess daily ghost attacks do that to you." Tucker piped in. "Wait. So if Santa Claus, Sandman, Tooth Fairy and the others are all real, then are Groundhog, Persephone and the others real too? Is there a Spirit of Technology or something around?"

Jack smiled at Tucker's exclusion of the Easter Bunny, even though it was probably not on purpose. "Well, Groundhog is an old grumpy thing, and Persephone thinks that she's so much better than everyone. But yes, they are real, but some like Jupiter and Thor are just myths. Loki's as real as it gets, but he's much more bearable than what the humans depicts him in the stories... I'm getting off track. We have a Spirit of Electricity, Zeus. That's about as close as it gets to Technology... I think."

Tucker sighed a little in disappointment and the silence falls yet again. Danny shook his head as he finally remembered the question that he meant to ask, "So, tell me, why are you in Amity Park?"

"I was just in the skies of Amity Park, I was just flying by..."

"And making it snow." Danny quipped. He was not really looking around and trying to pick a fight, but he couldn't help but get annoyed at Jack. Maybe entities with ice powers just never gets along.

"It's my job! Plus, the kids like a snow day once in a while."

"It's the weekend! There's always something the spirits want when they come here. Really, what do you want?"

"Danny, you should stop. This isn't how you're suppose to behave-" Sam starts, throwing worried glances between the two boys. Danny's eyes were starting to glow a neon green.

"It's fine." Jack played a little with his stick, smirking. "We're getting a little terrestrial, aren't we?" He didn't know all that much about ghosts, but from his exchange and observations throughout the years, Jack knew that stronger ghosts generally have an obsession of sorts. A belief that they hold on to stronger than anything.

"I'm not terrestrial!" Danny protested, puffing up his cheeks. He knew that it was not true before the words even came out of his mouth.

"Sure. And I'm not Jack Frost." He taunted, but decided to tell the trio his suspicions. "Well Danny, I guess it looks like we found your obsession."

"I'm not obsessed with anything!" Danny continued to protest in denial, but then he looked at Sam's disapproving look, blushed, and said nothing.

"Then how do you explain your unreasonable anger about me just floating by the skies of Amity Park? I've been around long enough to tell an obsession of a ghost's when I see one. You're definitely overly protective about this place, irrationally so." Jack spoke and then shook his head. "Woah, I was going quite deep there for a second, sorry."

Danny slumped back, defeated. He didn't have anything to say about that.

"Dude, that's totally cool! This can be like, your haunt!" Tucker commented, oblivious to the tension and his best friend's stress and mild embarrassment.

"Hey!" Jack suddenly exclaimed, slightly starting everyone. He floated to the general direction of the kitchen and then pointed in that direction. "What's that? I think you got a visitor, Phantom. A glowing, floating middle-aged man with a-"

"Beware!" A voice rang out from the kitchen as the trio collectively groaned.

"Box." Jack finished dryly.

Sorry. Took an eight-week side trip to Harvard during the summer. As much as I love my fanfics, academics have to come first, right? If only someone can find me a Calculus tutor...
