A Skyward Sword Adventure

Chapter One: Let the Game Begin

The bell rang, so I collected my things from under my chair, and stuffed them in my binder. "Finally, school is out for fall break! Now I can actually do stuff I want, and not have to worry about Algebra, English, Chemistry, History, or Spanish for five whole days!" I thought with excitement. I couldn't wait to get home. I would be playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in about twenty minutes from now. My name is Samuel Garfello, and I'm a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda, in case you couldn't tell already. I've played most of the other Zelda games, such as Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess, but Skyward Sword was by far one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite. I beat it four times, and it never got boring once.

Anyway, I walked out of my last class of the day, which was band, and headed for my locker. I stuffed my books back into it, grabbed my book bag, and headed for my bus. The ride was quick, and once I got home, I marched upstairs and dropped off my book bag in my room. I then changed into a green T-shirt with the Hylian crest on it, and a pair of jeans. I was going to go straight downstairs, but I decided to quickly try my Link costume on first, because, after all, Halloween was tomorrow.

The costume itself wasn't anything super amazing; I had seen costumes way better than the one I had on when I went to Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses a couple of months ago. But, what I really loved about my costume was the replica of the Master Sword it came with. It looked just like the sword from the game, and was sharp enough to hurt someone if I wanted to.

Anyway, after admiring myself in my tunic, green cap, and white tights for about a minute or so, I changed out of my costume and returned down the stairs. I decided to take my sword with me, because sometimes I like to swing it around and roleplay. Once I was safely downstairs, I set my sword down, and started to reach forward to press the power button on my Wii. However, before I could, I heard a knock at my front door.

I quickly dashed upstairs, wondering who it was, and opened the door to find my best friend, Jack Jensen, standing on the steps. Jack had blond hair, and was the same age as me. He was slightly taller than me as well, but I tried not to care about it all that much. Jack and I have been friends ever since I moved to my house, even though we didn't really have the same interests. "Hey, Sam. What's up?" Jack asked casually. I thought for a moment, and shrugged. "Nothing much, I guess. What's up with you?" I replied.

Jack shook his head. "Not much. I was just stopping by my friends' houses to see if anyone else was going to the big costume party that's supposed to be happening tomorrow. So far, everyone I asked said they were. But, let me guess. Tomorrow night, you're just going to stay inside and pull an all-nighter playing Zelda, aren't you?" he joked. I scoffed; I don't know why, but Jack thought that anything except for first-person shooters were stupid and childish. I've played them, and I didn't think they were stupid; they just weren't my style, so I naturally shied away from them.

I glared back at Jack, and answered him. "Well, actually, I was planning to go to that party, so yeah, I'll go. But right now, I'm busy. So, maybe we can do stuff later." I tried to shut the door on him, but he jammed his foot in the gap and stopped the door before it was completely shut. "No, you're not busy. You were just about to go play Zelda for the thousandth time. Come on, you can't honestly still be interested in those games. You've probably beaten each one at least a hundred times," Jack groaned, rolling his eyes.

"Well, I still am interested in them, and you would be too if you would just try one. But no, you think anything besides first-person shooters is too childish to play. Right now, I'm busy. I'm busy saving Hyrule from Demise and Ghirahim!" I shouted back. I kicked Jack's foot out of the way, shut the door in his face, and quickly locked it, feeling frustrated. After a small pause, I walked back downstairs to turn on my Wii. However, yet again, just as I was about to press the power button, I heard knocking on my door. And, it sounded much more frantic than last time. So, I rushed upstairs to the door, unlocked it, and opened it. But, there wasn't anyone there.

I stood there for a second, and scoffed. "Whatever, Jack. Go ahead and ding-dong-ditch me like an idiot, trying to get me pissed off!" I shouted to the air. I shut the door, locked it again, and went downstairs for the third time. I sat down on the floor near my sword, and finally pressed the power button on my Wii Remote. My console turned on, and I booted up The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. However, once the game loaded, I noticed that something was wrong. Horribly wrong. At the File Select screen, I was greeted with a terrifying sight: my save files were completely gone! All three of the slots said "New Adventure" on them.

I stared at my TV in shock, refusing to believe what was in front of me. "For the love of Hylia, are you freaking kidding me? My files just decide to go 'poof' and disappear?!" I shouted at the TV. After a moment of silence, I scoffed. "Whatever! You know what, then? I'll start over! I don't care!" I snapped. I clicked one of the "New Adventure" buttons, and I kept Link's name as "Link" because I prefer it that way. After clicking Start, I relaxed a bit and sat back as the TV showed a pitch-black screen.

However, as time began to pass, I noticed that the normal cut scenes weren't triggering; the screen remained black. I stood up, took a closer look at the screen, and suddenly noticed a familiar face reflecting in the TV from behind me. It was someone I have seen countless times, yet I have never seen in real life. In complete disbelief, I slowly turned around, and saw the Demon Lord Ghirahim staring back at me. My mouth fell open. Meanwhile, Ghirahim just chuckled at me and licked his mouth with that creepy tongue of his.

I was still in shock. "Hello, Samuel," Ghirahim said softly, which startled me even more. I eventually managed to find my voice again, and spoke up. "H-H-How d-do you know m-my name?" I stuttered, my eyes wide. The Demon Lord grinned. "Oh, don't worry about that. However, why don't you come with me? I think I might have a use for you, as well as someone who you might know," he said. Ghirahim moved closer to me, and I was paralyzed with fear. I wasn't really thinking about what he was saying at the moment. All I knew was I needed to get him out of here, or get myself to safety. Fast.

I quickly darted my eyes down to see if I had anything that could help, and spotted my Master Sword replica sitting at my feet. So, I grabbed it, unsheathed it, and pointed it straight at Ghirahim's chest. He laughed at me like he was insulted at the very thought of fighting me, and snapped his fingers. After that, everything around me faded, and I was pulled into a black void of unconsciousness.

When I came to, I was staring at a blue sky, which meant I was somehow outside. However, I didn't remember ever going outside before I passed out. I heard a waterfall running, and also heard some voices off in the distance. They were whispering about how one of them was "going to win the Wing Ceremony after they stole that shrimp's Loftwing." I was still dazed, and I didn't really pay attention to what I was hearing.

I sat up, and held my forehead, which pounded with horrible pain. "Oh, man. That is it. I should lay off the Zelda games for at least a day," I thought groggily. After a bit, I stood up, stretched, and looked around. However, what I saw almost made me pass out again. "Oh… my… Goddess!" I gasped. The place I was in looked just like a certain city in the sky, and I'll give you a hint: it wasn't the one from Twilight Princess. I was standing in Skyloft.

"This can not be real!" I exclaimed. I glanced around some more, and saw that I was right near the lake where the "Sky Keep" Bird Statue was; I could see the thing from across the lake. I looked to my right, and saw that Groose, Cawlin, and Strich were walking into the Waterfall Cave. They were holding Link's Crimson Loftwing by a rope, trying to drag it inside.

I sat down on the ground again, once again refusing to believe what I was seeing. "It's okay, Samuel. You're just hallucinating, that's all. This is all some crazy dream," I tried to explain to myself. There was too much noise going on around me to think clearly, so I covered my ears with my hands so I could think in silence. However, at that moment, I noticed that my ears felt completely different than they did before, and I gasped.

"No freaking way…" I whispered. I ran over to the lake, and leaned down on my hands and knees to see my reflection. I saw my face staring back at me, but there were a few changes. My hair was still dark brown, but it was a little longer than it was before. I still wore glasses, and my eyes were still green. But, poking out of my hair on both sides of my head were—

"Hylian ears. Are you freaking kidding me?" I muttered, feeling them again. My ears were now pointed, like all of the Hylian's ears were. And, they looked longer, too. "So, this was how I was able to hear Groose and his friends from all the way across the lake! Well, either that, or they aren't very good at whispering," I thought. Even though I was initially shocked by my new ears, I was actually really grateful for them, because I now knew they came with benefits. I knew that they would enhance my hearing, that they looked really cool, and, most of all, that they would prevent anyone from staring at me like I was from Mars, because everyone else had them, too.

Once I got over my initial shock, I sat down on the edge of the lake, and started to think. "Okay, Samuel. Just think for a second, and sum up everything. One: You're somehow in Skyloft. Two: You have been turned into a Hylian for no explainable reason. Three: You have to get home, but you have absolutely no idea how to do it. And Four: You can't mess up anything major from the game, or horrible stuff could happen," I listed. That was all I could really come up with, other than the obvious fact that Ghirahim was behind this.

Now that I was calmed, I checked myself for anything that might be of use. I didn't notice it before, but my sword from my Link costume was strapped to my back in a sheath. "At least I have something to defend myself with," I thought. I looked down at my body, and saw that I had Skyloftian clothes on; my green T-shirt with the Hylian crest was replaced with a simple tan shirt, and my jeans were replaced with a pair of pants like the pair Link wore before he got the Knight's Tunic. But, these were blue instead of green.

I looked down at my feet, and saw that I had sandals on instead of tennis shoes. Then, I checked my pockets, and I found a small leather pouch which I presumed was for carrying Rupees, and a map of Skyloft. Aside from that, there wasn't anything else. At all. I looked out towards Skyloft, and gave a small sigh. "Well, Samuel, you might as well go look around to see if you can find anything useful," I thought. So, I started cutting grass, rolling into trees, and smashing pots. After about 10 minutes of work, I had about 65 Rupees in my wallet.

After I decided I had enough money to do what I wanted, I looked out towards the Statue of the Goddess, and saw a blue Loftwing fly out of the area. It was headed towards the Knight Academy, and there was a letter clamped in its beak. "Okay, Samuel. Let the game begin," I thought. I trekked closer to the Academy, following the huge bird, and watched as Zelda's blue Loftwing stuck its head into Link's bedroom window. I waited a few seconds, and I suddenly heard it give a huge screech. Then, it bent its neck forward slightly, like it was spitting something, and I chuckled; I always found that part funny.

Zelda's Loftwing ducked its head out of the window, and flew off, eventually vanishing from sight. So, I ran up to the gate near the Statue of the Goddess and the Knight Academy. But, Jakamar was working on it, so it was locked, and I couldn't get inside. "Damn," I muttered, scolding myself for not remembering that. I knew I wasn't going to wait for Link to come outside; with my luck, he would probably see me and start asking questions. I knew I had to get on the other side of the gate, and I knew I couldn't go through the other gate, or Instructor Hornwell would see me.

I had no choice. The only way through the gate was to jump. Obviously, I was scared at first, but I eventually calmed myself down. "It's okay, Samuel. You'll probably do this plenty of times in the next week or so anyway, so get used to it now," I told myself. After my mental pep talk, I lifted myself onto the ledge of the stairs, took a deep breath, and jumped off the side of the stairs into the open sky.

Falling from an island in the sky wasn't as bad as I thought it would be; it actually was pretty cool. Initially, I panicked at the feeling of having no ground beneath me. However, after only a split-second, I relaxed a little. I fell freely for a few seconds, feeling the wind whip past my body; it almost felt like I was flying. After a few more seconds of falling, I heard the caw of a Loftwing, and felt its feet abruptly grab my body. A few seconds later, I was dropped between the Knight Academy and the Statue of the Goddess.

I landed on the ground safely, and stood up to hear a voice coming from the rider of the Loftwing. "Watch your step there! You can't always depend on knights like me to swoop in and save you!" he shouted. I turned to the rider, and thanked him with a small nod. After he flew off, I turned, and decided to pray at the Bird Statue that was near me. I didn't know if it would do me any good, but I felt safer after doing it. After my prayer was done, I turned around, took a deep breath, walked forward, and entered the Knight Academy.
