Epilogue

After hearing Naruto's permission to enter behind the door, Sakura entered the Hokage's office only to widen her eyes and stare in confusion at the empty chair placed in front of Naruto's desk.

"Naruto?" she called the Rokudaime Hokage's attention. He looked up from his paperwork and grinned widely at her presence.

"Yeah, Sakura-chan?"

"The Kazekage…where's the Kazekage?" she asked. "I thought there was supposed to be a meeting."

Naruto chuckled and brought his attention back to his papers. "There was" he said. "It ended early in his haste."

Sakura tilted her head to the side. "Why? Was there someplace he had to be?"

The blond chuckled once more. "Yeah," he said, grinning from ear-to-ear, "at the Hyuuga compound…to eat cookies."

The wonderful scent of freshly baked cookies wafted around the kitchen inside the Hyuuga mansion. And surely enough, a plate full of chocolate chip cookies was placed on a rectangular kitchen table for three men to eat.

While the two focused on eating and tasting the delicious treat, one of them stared with scrutinizing eyes at the red-head just across from him. Despite the intense gaze sent his way, Gaara continued to eat in his own pace savoring the sweet taste in his mouth, clearly unfazed by whatever was currently happening.

A brief moment later, the gaze dropped as Kiba looked away and clicked his tongue in obvious annoyance. "Oi, Shino," the Inuzuka called to his teammate sitting beside him.

Shino slightly turned his head to face a scowling Kiba, indicating that he was listening.

"How come he's here?" Kiba said, inclining his head to Gaara's direction.

Shino remained silent while he adjusted his sunglasses. His eyes behind the shades settled on the silent Kazekage. "Simple," he said in his serious tone, "it's because Hinata wanted to and invited him to be here."

This only seemed to annoy Kiba more. And the narrowing of his eyes and deep furrowing of his brows was enough proof of it. He growled and snatched a cookie from the plate. "Whatever! I don't like it one bit!"

"Unfortunately for you, you have no say in the matter" Shino said. "This is Hinata's decision. Not yours or mine."

"I know that, dammit!" Kiba yelled, chomping angrily at the cookie in his hand. After he chewed a few, he gradually calmed down and only stared at the treat with an unnoticeable blush in his cheeks. "This is delicious…" he said quietly.

Shino nodded in agreement and said, "As usual. It is made by Hinata after all."

As fast as Kiba's demeanor changed, it quickly disappeared and a scowl returned to his features as he eyed Gaara once again. "Still, I could not stand how he's not even acknowledging our presence" he said. Suddenly, an idea came to mind and a sly grin formed on his lips. Feigning surprise, Kiba turned to look at the kitchen door and called loud enough for them to hear, "Ah, Hinata."

Gaara's head immediately whipped to the side to find nothing but a closed door. Kiba's loud laughter resounded through the walls upon seeing his reaction. Akamaru, who was lying quietly on the floor, looked up in question to his master, Shino just sighed at his teammate's antic while Gaara, finally having his full attention on the Inuzuka, slightly narrowed his eyes and said, "I'm glad to see you're so amused." Sarcasm intended, of course.

Kiba's laughter gradually toned down to a mischievous grin and he wiped away the tears he got from laughing too hard. "Oh?" he said. "I'm glad you noticed. For a second there, I thought you completely ignored us."

His tone was challenging but Gaara paid no heed to it. Instead, he turned to Shino and asked, "Where's Hinata?"

"Tch! Bastard! Stop ignoring me!" Kiba shouted, slamming his clenched fist to the table.

"Her father called her for a short meeting" Shino answered.

"Oi, bug-boy! Don't you dare—"

"As far as I know, it is a necessity as she is the heiress to the clan" Shino smoothly said.

Gaara inclined his head. "I see."

"You guys!" Kiba continued shouting. "I'll beat the hell out of you! I'll kill you and kill you again to make sure you're dead!"

"Kiba, you're being redundant" Shino said, adjusting his glasses.

"What the hell does that mean?!" Kiba roared. "Nevermind!" he said just as Shino was about to answer. "I found myself not caring!" He turned his head away from them and crossed his arms in defiance.

There was a moment of silence while Shino and Gaara stared blankly at the sulking Kiba. Gaara was the first to speak. "Is he always like that?" he asked Shino.

"No," Shino replied. "But most of the time."

"Tch, go ahead" Kiba said in a tone filled with sarcasm. "Talk about me like I'm not in the room."

"It really does appear that he's usually like that" Gaara commented.

"Even our friends say he's a lot similar to Naruto" Shino said.

Gaara nodded sagely. "I suppose I could agree" he said. "But he lacks the optimistic enthusiasm always present in Naruto."

Shino nodded and turned his head to the now growling Kiba.

"Enough!" the Inuzuka yelled and pointed his finger at Gaara. "I can't see how Hinata could stand this bastard! Or even fall in love with him!" He crossed his arms over his chest. "Oi, bastard-kage-sama, just what the hell did you do to our Hinata? Tell me, was it genjutsu?"

Gaara slightly tilted his head to the side and his eyes narrowed. "Our Hinata?" he asked Kiba.

"Yeah, our Hinata" Kiba repeated. "Not yours."

"Technically, the Kaze—"

"Shut it, bug-boy!" Kiba snarled and turned back to Gaara. "I will never allow her to belong to you" he said with his chin held high.

Gaara shot him a mild glare. "That's not for you to decide" he said and ate another cookie.

Kiba's brows furrowed. "Hey, I don't care if you've been together for three months now. Though technically speaking, it wasn't a consistent three months that you were really 'together'"—he used his hands to quote—"Not when you're in Suna while Hinata's here with us in Konoha" he said. "And since you weren't really together for that long, I think I still have the right to object this relationship."

Gaara's expression turned dark. "As I said, that's not for you to decide. Besides, I doubt Hinata's going to listen and just end our relationship because of you."

Kiba smirked, pleased to see the red-head's reaction. "I see you're so confident."

"I am" Gaara said.

"You're confident about her affections toward you" Kiba said.

Gaara grabbed another cookie from the plate. "Yes."

Kiba raised an eyebrow. "Had she even told you directly that she loves you?"

Gaara paused with his hand still holding the cookie halfway to his mouth.

It was just a wild guess and a means for teasing—or annoying—Gaara. So, of course, Kiba and Shino hadn't certainly expected his reaction and just stared shell-shocked at the Kazekage across from them.

Unbeknownst to them except Shino, Hinata had already arrived a moment ago. She would have opened the kitchen door but Kiba's question made her stop short.

And for a few moments, there was silence.

"Wait…" Kiba said in a quiet tone, unable to find most of his voice in his surprise. "Y-you serious?"

Gaara's not himself ever since leaving the Hyuuga compound a few hours ago, Hinata thought while glancing up to the unusually silent Kazekage beside her. It wasn't that Gaara talks a lot. He's just quieter than normal. Usually, he would say something at least a word or two to her. But now, he hasn't uttered even a word.

They were currently strolling around the streets of Konoha with no specific destination in mind. And, finally, Hinata could already show herself to a lot of people without having to worry about swarming admirers with flower bouquets and presents she could not bring herself to accept, despite how they insist on it. And that was thanks to one reason. Gaara's in Konoha. No man would dare risk his life in approaching the Hyuuga heiress that day. Not when Gaara had threatened them a few months ago. And especially not when he, the Kazekage—a.k.a boyfriend— was just beside her. Although the real reason he came to Konoha was for the required occasional meetings with the Hokage, it was a given that seeing Hinata was also one of his intentions for visiting.

Hinata silently observed Gaara one more time before asking, "Gaara? Is…Is everything alright?"

Jade eyes slid down to meet her lavender-tinted ones. They were unexpectedly unreadable. He continued to look at her with a blank expression before giving her a short nod and turning his attention on the streets once more.

He really isn't himself, Hinata thought, her brows creasing in worry. If anything, he looks…depressed. No doubt it's because of what Kiba-kun said. She glanced up to him again while she thought of what to do to at least comfort him. When an idea came to mind, her face brightened and she smiled. She brought her hand forward and gently grasped Gaara's hand in hers. She noticed Gaara stop in his steps. She looked up, meeting his gaze, and smiled warmly at him. Truth be told, they both didn't greatly welcome the idea of public display of affections. But, this time was an exception, Hinata supposed.

Seeing how she smiled at him, Gaara couldn't help the small tug at the corners of his lips as he smiled back at her. And, for a moment, he found himself not caring of the people's attention on them.

"Gaara," Hinata began uncertainly, tilting her head to the side, "um…is there…something you would like to…tell me?" She could ask him directly, but somehow she couldn't bring herself to do so. She patiently waited and watched Gaara's eyes wander around her face then slowly slid down to stare at their intertwined hands. She noticed his features soften.

Finally, he looked back up at her and shook his head in reply. A small smile had formed on his lips. "No, there isn't" he said.

If his expression hadn't looked so contented, Hinata would've questioned him further. But because he was staring back at her with such a soft look on his face, she couldn't do anything but smile back and hold his hand firmer in hers. They began walking once again, neither letting go of the other's hold. It seems there really isn't anything to worry about, Hinata thought, but still…Gaara's acting differently. Then, she remembered Kiba's question.

"Had she even told you directly that she loves you?"

Hinata felt her cheeks heat up. Not once had I told Gaara I love him. I know that's what's bothering him a-and I really had meant to tell him. B-but even with these past three months we've been sending each other letters between Konoha and Suna, I still couldn't find the courage to tell him. I couldn't even simply write it in the letter…because it's basic ninja protocol to go through all outgoing letters. She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to fight down her blush. If it's the only way to set him at ease, I'll say it. I'll tell him. I have to.

I want to…

"Hinata?" Gaara's voice called out to her, snapping her back to reality.

Hinata met his curious gaze as they came to a stop. "Y-yes?"

Gaara studied her for a second before asking, "Would you like to rest?" There was a hint of concern in his voice.

"Eh?" came her intelligent reply. A gasp escaped her lips when she felt his hand on her cheek.

"Hmm…I was right" he muttered. "Your face feels hot." He looked up at the afternoon sky. "It must be the heat." When he heard Hinata's soft giggle, he stared at her in confusion.

She brought her hand up to touch the back of his hand that was still on her cheek and slightly leaned on it. She closed her eyes and lightly shook her head. "I do—"

"OH MAN! I COULD FINALLY EAT!" a loud voice interrupted Hinata.

Gaara and Hinata's head turned to the side to the source of the voice to find Naruto sitting inside Ichiraku's ramen shop with Sakura and Sai to his side.

"Naruto! Keep your voice down, you idiot!" Sakura scolded as she punched him in the head.

"That hurt, Sakura-chan" Naruto muttered. He brought his hands up to ease his new injury. "I'm just relieved that I've finished half of the paperwork. It's already this late in the afternoon and I still haven't had my lunch yet."

Sakura shot him a glare. "Even so," she said, "you don't have to be so loud about it!"

"Easy for you to say because you and Sai have already eaten" he whispered to himself.

Apparently, Sakura was able to hear it. She scowled at him and grabbed him by the collar. "I dare you to repeat what you just said, Uzumaki Naruto!"

Naruto flailed his hands in front of him in a sad attempt to calm down his pink-haired teammate. "Uh…er…" he stammered and glanced behind Sakura. "Sai! Give me a hand here, please?" he begged his other teammate who was focused on his sketches, as he was only there to accompany them.

Sai turned his gaze from his sketch pad to look at the situation currently happening. After seeing Sakura's scary expression, he faked a smile at the blond Hokage. "Not on your life, Dickless" he said rather smoothly.

"Hey! How many times have I told you not to call me that?!" Naruto yelled at him.

"Be quiet, you idiot Hokage!" Sakura shouted and sent her fist straight to Naruto's left cheek.

By this time, Gaara and Hinata had already entered the ramen shop and were standing still while they witnessed Team 7's "conversation" in front of them.

"You're getting along rather well with your old team, Naruto" Gaara monotonously remarked but a tinge of amusement could be heard from his voice.

Three heads turned to the newly-arrived couple.

"Gaara! Hinata-chan!" Naruto beamed despite his current black-and-blue state.

"Naruto-kun" Hinata greeted back with a bow. Then, she turned to Sakura and Sai and did the same.

"Hinata, Gaara-san," Sakura greeted with a smile, "what are you guys doing here?"

"Well, we happened to have passed by when we heard Naruto-kun's voice and decided to see if everything was…um…alright" Hinata said with uncertainty when she glanced at the blond Hokage's beaten up face. He was grinning but he still looked pitiful.

Naruto chuckled while rubbing his sore head. "Aww, Hinata-chan, you—"

"See, Naruto?" Sakura cut off and glared at him. "I told you your voice was too loud!"

While Sakura continued scolding Naruto, Hinata caught Gaara's questioning glance at Sai who was busy drawing something in his sketch pad.

"Do you want to see?" Hinata said to Gaara quietly.

Gaara gave her a blank stare.

"Sai-san has some really nice drawings" she said with a smile.

He stared at her for a few seconds before nodding his head. No sooner than he agreed that he felt Hinata hold his hand and gently pulled him towards Sai's side.

Sensing someone approach him, Sai lifted his head and turned to the side to see a smiling Hinata and an impassive Gaara looking down at his art in progress.

"Sai-san, I hope you don't mind us watching you draw" Hinata softly said.

When Sai just blankly stared at her and Gaara, Hinata thought he hadn't heard her the first time. She was about the repeat what she had just said when Sai finally reacted and he flashed a fake smile. "No, I don't mind at all," he said, "Weirdo."

Hinata froze.

Weirdo…Weirdo…Weirdo…

The word echoed in Hinata's head and her smile slightly faltered. "E-eh?"

Sakura and Naruto's ears twitched as they both heard Sai's nickname for Hinata.

"Weirdo?" Gaara echoed.

Sai turned to Gaara and studied him.

Sakura and Naruto immediately realized what their teammate was going to do. And they dreaded for his fate if he so ever mention an improper nickname to call Gaara. So, before Sai could utter another word, they slapped a hand to his mouth.

Sakura let out a nervous laugh. "He didn't mean what he had called you, Hinata" she said. "Don't worry about it."

Hinata put on a weak smile. "Um…o-okay…"

"Anyways," Naruto said while he released Sai and sat back on his chair to eat. "Do you want to eat ramen?"

"No, thank you," Hinata said, "Gaara and I already had our lunch."

Sakura giggled. "I'm assuming that ever since Gaara-san left the meeting with Naruto, he's been with you all day, Hinata?" she asked. She didn't even have to wait for an answer when she saw Hinata blush, making her laugh in amusement. "Did you know what Ino had said about you two?" When Hinata shook her head, she continued. "She said something about 'a forbidden love between an angel and a demon'." She grinned when Hinata's blush turned a different shade. "Well, now that I had a closer look at you two, I can see how that Ino-pig had come up with such a wonderful idea."

"A forbidden love between an angel and a demon?" Naruto echoed and snorted. "That's ridiculous!"

"Shut it, Naruto" Sakura warned.

"Hmm…a forbidden love, huh?" Sai muttered. Their discussion had somehow piqued his interest. He turned his blank gaze at the couple standing beside him. "Angel and demon…" he quietly said to himself with a hand in his chin as if deep in thought.

Hinata tilted her head to the side in question. "Sai-san?"

Suddenly, Sai stood up from his seat and faced the couple. "May I paint you?" he asked.

Hinata stared wide-eyed at Sai in surprise. She vaguely noticed Sakura and Naruto's surprised reactions as well. Sai's expression remained unreadable, but Hinata could tell he was serious. But, why would he want to paint them? Why would he want to paint her? Hinata slowly looked up to Gaara for his decision. When he gave her a slight nod, she smiled and turned back to Sai. "Sure, Sai-san" she said.

Sai gave them a genuine smile and proceeded to pack his sketch pad and drawing materials. After he finished, he turned to Sakura and Naruto. "I'll be back later" he said, which earned him a nod and a goodbye. With that, he led Hinata and Gaara outside Ichiraku's towards his preferred place. The walk was silent while he led them to the forest. By the time he stopped, he turned to the couple and faked a smile. "I guess this place would do" he said.

Hinata and Gaara looked around to see where Sai had led them. They were in a wide forest clearing where there was only a tall and big tree standing at the center. It was the only place that was bright while the rest of the forest would have been very dark if not for the light illuminating the whole place.

"I would have to ask you to go there" Sai said to them while he pointed to the tree at the center. Hinata and Gaara complied. Gaara stood to the side where the rest of the shadow of the tree was while Hinata was beside him where there was only the shadow of the tree leaves. Sai instructed both of them to sit down beside each other. He paused to look at them. "Hmm…I need more interaction" he said. Then, he asked Hinata to place herself in front of Gaara and lean her head against his shoulder. She complied, but not without a dark blush on her face. "That's it," Sai said while he sat down and pulled out his sketch pad from his bag. "Now, place your hand on his chest" he said to Hinata. After she did as he told her, he turned to Gaara and instructed him to put his hand around her waist and hold Hinata's hand that was on his chest. "Perfect" Sai commented, flipping his sketch pad open and started sketching.

"G-Gaara?" Hinata whispered.

"Hm?"

"I'm not…" she bit her lip and willed herself to continue, "I'm not crushing you…with my weight…a-am I?"

Gaara blinked at her. Her cheeks were a bright red and she looked embarrassed. He chuckled and lightly shook his head in reply.

Hinata slightly pouted. "Wh-What's so funny?"

Gaara just smiled. "Your question" he answered in an amused tone. "I can handle your weight just fine, especially because you're light."

"O-oh…okay" she said and buried her face at the crook of his neck.

They were silent and still for a while. Gaara watched Sai curiously while the artist pulled out a paintbrush, occasionally glancing their way.

Hinata, on the other hand, closed her eyes and relished on Gaara's warmth as she let her mind wander. I guess now would be a perfect time to tell him. Sai-san's a good distance away from us so I won't have to worry about being heard. Now's the opportunity for me to finally say it. Hinata slowly opened her eyes and gathered her courage. "Gaara?" she softly called.

"Yes?" he replied.

"I…um…Gaara, I…" Don't stutter, don't stutter, don't stutter…She paused and took deep calming breaths without moving from her position. I have to tell him. You can do this, Hinata!, she encouraged in her mind. Then, she tried once more. "Gaara…I love you" she said in a voice not louder than a whisper. She immediately noticed him tense but he didn't say a word. Everything seemed to have stopped while she waited for what he'll say.

When Gaara had finally managed to move, he slowly lifted a hand to her chin and gently made her look at him. "Hinata" he breathed. His eyes were soft and his lips had formed a small smile. He looked…happy.

Hinata gave him an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry…it took me long to be able to say it" she said. "But I…heard…what Kiba-kun had said to you earlier. And I knew you were bothered by it" she paused to see his look of surprise. "Why didn't you tell me?" she asked in concern.

Gaara broke their eye contact and looked down in thought. "How was I supposed to tell you?" he said and met her gaze again. When she was about to open her mouth to answer, he interrupted her by shaking his head. "Even then, I didn't want to force you. Although you had not verbally told me, I already know how you feel" he said. "Your actions are more than enough for me to know you hold the same feelings as I do for you."

Hinata's face brightened and she smiled warmly. "Gaara…"

"I am happy to have you with me, Hinata" he said. "And that is more than enough."

Without a word, Hinata brought her arms around Gaara's neck and pulled him into her embrace.

Gaara smiled against the crook of her neck. "I love you, Hinata."

"I know" she said with her voice muffled by his clothes. "I love you too." Slightly pulling away, Hinata turned her head to the side and met Gaara's gaze. She slowly leaned up just as Gaara was already leaning down. When their lips brushed lightly against each other, Gaara leaned further and claimed Hinata's mouth into a kiss.

Meanwhile, Sai flipped another page on his sketch pad and began to work on a clean sheet. "Hmm…an excellent view" he remarked loud enough for the couple to hear.

As soon as they heard his voice, Hinata and Gaara immediately pulled away from their kiss. Hinata quickly buried her face on Gaara's shoulder to hide her deep blush while Gaara glared at Sai for interrupting.

Sai just blinked. "Oh, please don't mind me," he said, "continue with what you were doing. I was just trying to capture the moment." Then, he turned back to his sketch pad and continued painting. Gaara and Hinata remained still. A moment later, he spoke once again, "And…done." He watched the couple stand up and approach him. When they were already standing in front of him, he stood up as well and showed them two paintings. The first one was Gaara and Hinata seated in a position Sai instructed them. What made Hinata's eyes widen in amazement was the blending of their colors. She shifted her eyes to her figure seated between Gaara's legs. She noticed she looked like she was glowing in the painting while Gaara, although he appeared dark, was able to contrast her quite well.

"An angel and a demon" Sai said with a fake smile. "If you thought about it, it's tragic given their differences." He watched Hinata gave the first painting a last look before turning her confused gaze to him. He immediately understood what she wanted to ask and quickly explained, "I didn't want it to appear tragic. I wanted to express that no matter how different they may be, they could create something beautiful out of it." He gestured to the painting now in Gaara's hand.

Hinata nodded with a smile. "I see." Then, she gently took the second painting from Sai and studied it. Her face instantly turned beet red and she almost dropped the painting from her grasp.

Gaara noticed her reaction and also took a look at the painting. He barely managed to hide his surprise at the portrait of him and Hinata kissing. The colors were almost the same as the first painting. The only difference was the whole background was no longer filled with tall green trees and only the silhouettes of the trees and the ground remained. Hinata and Gaara's colors seemed to have extended further and dominated the portrait. Hinata's color extended to her side of the portrait from lavender and gradually turned to white while Gaara's turned from red to black.

"Then, the demon and angel's…affections towards each other had grown stronger" Sai proceeded to explain, pausing for the word he found suitable for him to say. He flashed them a fake smile. "Their feelings caused chaos and the world had suffered for them."

"Eh?!" Hinata exclaimed.

"Just joking" Sai said, still with a fake smile. "Emphasizing your colors for the second painting seemed fit. Back at Ichiraku's, I noticed how contrasting your colors are, like how different an angel and a demon is. It just came to me that your…close proximity was a perfect combination for the play of colors I incorporated there" he gestured to the second painting in Hinata's grasp.

To say Hinata was amazed would be an understatement. She never thought that such a simple sentence from Ino could inspire Sai so much. And she never thought he was this good in art. Everything she saw in the painting held some meaning. "Sai-san," she finally managed to say, "These are beautiful."

"Thank you" Sai said with a genuine smile.

Gaara held up the first painting. "I would like to keep this, if you don't mind" he said monotonously.

"Not at all" Sai replied. "You could keep both, if you'd like."

"Th-this one would do!" Hinata quickly said before Gaara could respond. "Thank you, Sai-san" she said. "They're really wonderful."

Sai nodded and turned to pack the rest of his things up. After he finished, he turned back to them. "Then, I'll be on my way" he said. At Gaara and Hinata's nod, he turned away and walked back to the village.

"We could've gotten the other one as well" Gaara said to Hinata once Sai was already out of sight.

Hinata blushed and she cupped her cheeks in a sad attempt to hide it, "B-but it was embarrassing" she said, looking down at her sandals.

"Embarrassing?" Gaara echoed. Then, his eyes narrowed and he would've crossed his arms if not for the painting in his hand. "Are you saying you're ashamed of kissing me?"

Hinata's eyes widened and she flailed her hands in front of her. "N-n-no! Th-that's not what I m-meant!" she tried to explain. She could feel her face growing hotter and hotter by the second.

Gaara took a step closer "Then, what do you mean?"

Hinata looked down, wishing her blush would just fade away. "It's just that…I'm not used to it…especially now that Sai-san had actually painted us…k-k-kissing."

Gaara stared at her for a second before he nodded his head in understanding.

"B-but still," Hinata said, "I somehow…liked how the painting turned out."

Gaara nodded again. "I agree."

There was a moment of silence between them when Hinata suddenly gasped as she was pulled against Gaara's chest. She felt his arms encircle her waist, pulling her closer to him. "Gaara?" she asked as she hugged him back.

"I almost forgot to tell you something" Gaara whispered in her ear and slightly pulled away to give her a light kiss on the cheek. "The cookies were delicious."
