HAPPY NEW YEAR! So here's to a new year of chapters and new ventures for our favorite closer and his son.
If anyone has a fascinating head for details you may notice that today would technically be Aiden's 2nd birthday. So in honor of the day, I decided to give you all a glimpse at his first birthday which is about 4 months after the end of the prequel to this whole story Little Harvey Specter. Enjoy.
Disclaimer: I do not own Suits, just Aiden.
Age: 12 months old
The only reason people throw their children a huge first birthday is for themselves. The child wouldn't and couldn't possibly remember it. They would only experience it through ridiculous pictures that even the parents don't remember taking because they were running around like maniacs making sure everything was perfect for a party that no one would remember anyway.
It was for this reason that Harvey wasn't giving his son, Aiden, a first birthday party. Other little reasons were intertwined: Aiden's birthday was January 5th, shortly after the holiday season and Harvey was in no mood to be in another party-like environment so shortly after the holidays. The other reason was Aiden's birthday was on a Saturday which was a work day for Harvey and while Harvey had planned to leave work early, he did not want to use one of his personal days so early in the year to celebrate a day with his son upon which he would not remember. It was much easier to get Aiden back on his schedule after the holidays and not make another disruption in the boy's life.
So it came as a surprise to Harvey that during the week before Aiden's birthday, while at work, he was patched through to a call he hadn't been expecting.
"Harvey Specter." He answered, cradling the phone between his shoulder and ear while he wrote on top of some notes Mike had made for him.
"Harvey, how are you dear?" The voice on the other line stopped him mid-stroke.
"Mom...didn't expect to hear from you before the New Year." Harvey leaned back in his chair and twirled the pen in his fingers. He shot a look toward the redhead at the desk outside his office that was currently turned away from him as to not look at his face.
"I know that," Lily said and from her voice Harvey knew something was up.
"If you want to talk to Marcus he's at my place." Harvey deflected.
"Why would I call your office to talk to your brother?" Lily asked and Harvey could hear the condescension in her voice, as if she was affronted by Harvey's implication of her ignorance. Harvey rolled his eyes.
"Just making sure you knew which number you were calling." Harvey said biting back a sigh. He saw Mike coming into view around the corner. He beckoned with quick waves of his hand for Mike to come in even though he was on the phone. Mike slid into the room and laid his latest folders on the desk and sat in his seat at the right of the desk. Harvey pulled the folders forward before continuing, "Since it's established that you wanted to speak to me, what can I do for you mom?" Harvey asked as he flipped through Mike's work.
"What are you doing next Saturday?" Lily asked.
"Working," Harvey responded without thought because what else would he be doing on a Saturday?
"On your son's birthday?" Lily asked and Harvey could practically see her eyebrows mocking him.
"Not the whole day," Harvey revised flipping another page over, "I'm taking a half-day and spending a little time with Aiden to open presents and have a small cake."
"That's all?" Lily asked. Harvey stopped perusing the documents in front of him.
"You're being oddly inquisitive today mom, what is this really about?" Harvey straightened the papers as he asked this.
"You're not throwing Aiden a first birthday party?"
"...No." Harvey answered.
"And why not?"
"Because it's an unnecessary expense for something he's not going to remember and if you hadn't noticed, we are smacked within the holiday season, which maxes out my interpersonal interaction quota for the year."
"Harvey, it's one of those things that parents do for their children."
"Not me. I have enough on my plate as it is. Party planning is not a part of that plate."
"You're going to regret it."
Harvey chuckled. Oh the irony. "Of all the things that I might regret, not throwing my son a first birthday party is probably not high on that list." Harvey said crossing his legs at the knee and swinging the top leg around in the air. Mike looked up at that statement, thinking it might be about him. Mike gave Harvey that look; the one where Mike raises his eyebrows and widens his eyes. Harvey shook his head indicating that, no I'm not talking about you now stop looking at me like a goddamn kicked puppy. Mike smiled and returned to flipping through something that he grabbed off of Harvey's desk.
"Harvey..." his mother drawled. He rolled his eyes.
"Why are you pushing this may I ask?" Harvey snapped starting to lose the little patience he mustered up for his mother.
"Because...your brother is under the impression that he is going to his only nephew's birthday party." Lily explained and Harvey's eyes were beginning to tire from how much he was rolling them.
"Don't use Marcus as your scapegoat." Harvey shot back.
"I am not using your brother as a scapegoat. Do not insinuate. I mean it. Your brother and his wife took vacation days and the girls are missing days of school because they are anticipating a party for Aiden." Lily explained. Harvey slid forward, putting both feet on the floor and placing his elbows on his desk in an assertive manner.
"And where would they have gotten that idea?" Harvey growled.
"I hear that growl in your voice; I had nothing to do with it. People assume things sweetie; your son is turning one and most people, including your brother, throw parties for their one year old children-"
Harvey clicked his tongue against his teeth and snarled back, "Marcus didn't throw those parties, you did!" And then the light bulb clicked. "Oh...that's what this is about...it's not a party for Aiden. It's just a reason for you to throw a party." Harvey said and he heard his mother ruffling something on the other line. Probably fabric for a curtain or something and Harvey knew she did that when she had been caught.
"So what if it is?" Lily challenged.
"Mom, Aiden doesn't need it and I don't want it."
"Harvey, Aiden may very well be my last grandchild. Helen isn't getting any younger and you don't seem to want any more-"
"You got that right." Harvey interrupted.
"And its tradition-"
"You've only done it twice!"
"And it's what your father would have wanted."
"And I-" Harvey began but stopped when his brain caught him up to what his ears were hearing. She did not just go there. "What?"
"Your father, despite our differences," Harvey snorted because yeah that's how you could define what happened between his parents. If Lily heard Harvey's snort she didn't acknowledge it, "agreed on putting those differences aside for the sake of our grandchildren."
"But not your children." Harvey muttered.
"So if he were still alive, he would relish in the chance to celebrate his first, and only, grandson's first birthday. And you know it too." Lily added a beat afterward. Harvey pursed his lips and swiveled in his chair toward the grandiose windows behind him. He looked down on the windowsill at the picture Donna gave him for his birthday a few years ago. His father's smiling face stared back at him through the glass. Despite it all his mother was speaking the truth; his father would've loved being at Aiden's first birthday party, no matter the circumstances. His father would've loved Aiden. Harvey sighed and pushed a hand over his face.
"Fine." He said into the receiver.
"Yes?" His mother inflected. Harvey inhaled a patience-inducing breath.
"Yes, you can throw Aiden a birthday party." Harvey bit out.
"Thank you Harvey." Lily said.
"But I don't want to be asked any favors for the next six months." Harvey bargained. There was a pause on the other side of the line as his mother considered his counter offer.
"Fine. No favors for six months." She reiterated.
Harvey smirked. "Deal."
"Then I'll be seeing you soon sweetie. I need to talk over some details." Lily said in way of a goodbye. Harvey rolled his eyes.
"Goodbye mom." Harvey said hanging up. Mike let out a chuckle and Harvey turned a glare over to him. "You got something to add, Rookie?" Harvey said his voice dripping with a challenging tone. Mike looked over and shook his head before standing and walking out.
Harvey slid down in the chair and tilted his gaze toward his secretary who decided now was the time to face the computer.
"You had fun?" Harvey asked knowing full well she was listening. "What was that punishment for?"
"If you don't know why should I tell you?" Donna shot back turning to face him. Harvey sighed.
"Well whatever it was, I'll get you back." Harvey promised. Donna scoffed and flipped her hair back while swiveling her chair back towards the computer screen. Harvey smirked and resumed looking at Mike's work.
The dread settled into his stomach deeper and deeper as the New Year approached. He didn't understand why he was feeling this way. He wasn't the one throwing the party for Aiden and the baby wasn't acting out of the ordinary. Yet as the days climbed closer to Aiden's birthday, Harvey found himself feeling out of sorts with an apprehensive ache in his chest.
Saturday arrived and Harvey woke up alone in his condo, his brother and his family had already gone off to do God knows what before the party. Harvey laid in his bed listening to perfect silence for the first time in three weeks. It wasn't that he didn't like having his brother in for the holidays; the pair rarely saw each other outside of the holidays and it was comforting for Harvey to see that Marcus was doing alright despite a semi-monthly phone call verbally assuring him. However, it was shocking how much noise accumulates in two weeks after fifty weeks of pure silence. Of course this was how his holidays were before Aiden fell into his life just a few months ago. Now his life was full of noise every waking moment either from work or the currently baby that Harvey was listening for. It was a culture shock for him. He used to get home from work sometimes and have to force noise into his life; the TV, a record or a playful bedmate. Now there are giggles and shrieks when he walked through the door everyday and it makes him smile.
Harvey slid out of bed and made his way to the hallway toward Aiden's room, stopping in the bathroom for a moment. Opening the door a crack, Harvey stuck his head in and peered into the room. There was no movement in Aiden's crib and upon closer inspection the baby was still very much asleep.
Harvey backed out and veered toward the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee and read the paper in silence. It was a rare event for Harvey to be awake before his son. Aiden was very much a morning person and woke up early like clockwork. Harvey often joked that Aiden is a better alarm clock than his phone. Harvey was going to relish this.
Ring ring
Harvey's eyes shot toward the offending ringing. Who would be calling at eight-thirty in the morning? He had been given a day off by Jessica so it shouldn't have been work but then again Harvey has some unique clients that are difficult to talk down and would refuse to get off the line unless they talked to Harvey. Harvey decided to bite the bullet and pick up the phone.
"Hello?" Harvey greeted.
"Where are you?" The voice demanded.
"Mom?" Harvey deduced from the shrilling demand.
"Harvey, you aren't here yet." She rephrased into a more forceful statement.
"I know because I'm sitting at home." Harvey said.
"You're supposed to be here. Marcus told me he told you that I wanted you here at eight. It is now eight-thirty and as you said, you are sitting at home." Lily spat at him. Harvey ran a hand through his hair.
"What are you talking about? Marcus didn't tell me anything." Harvey argued not recalling his younger brother talking to him specifically about the wheres and whens of his son's party.
"You told me you told him Marcus." Lily's voice lowered as Harvey assumed that she turned to his brother who was standing by her.
"I did! He stuck his hand out from under his pillow and gave me an okay sign!" Marcus protested sounding louder than their mother.
"I was doing that so you'd leave me alone!" Harvey said, raising his voice so his brother could hear his statement.
Marcus started to protest but Harvey couldn't hear it over his mother saying, "I don't care what happened. You need to get over here as soon as possible, okay Harvey?" Lily said.
"You know the whole 'don't wake a sleeping baby thing'? I am not waking up my son to go five hours early to his own birthday party." Harvey protested.
"Harvey there is plenty for him to do here and if he needs to nap there's a room for that." Lily explained. Harvey sighed.
"Mom all you are doing is setting up. Why do I have to be there?"
"It's not just setting up. Aiden has a ton of pictures to take. I have some backgrounds set up."
"Wait...what?"
"Well, you know how the girls had professional pictures taken when they were infants? Well, Aiden doesn't have any so he's going to take them today." Lily explained. Harvey then heard some murmuring and his mother going, "oh good. Put it over there."
"Mom..." Harvey drawled, afraid of what the answer to his inquiry would be. "What exactly is entertainment for this party?
"Oh, not much; just a clown..." Lily responded.
"Oh, okay." He felt a little better now.
"And a balloon artist, and a face painter, and a petting zoo." Lily rattled off.
Harvey blinked at the phone before putting it back to his ear."Mom...what possessed you to get all of that?" Harvey asked.
"It's to entertain the kids."
"How many children are going to be there? Aiden doesn't have any friends!" Harvey yelled and if the boy wasn't awake yet he would be now.
"Your nieces-"
"That's two." Harvey counted.
"Your step-sisters' children so that makes six, seven if you include Aiden. And Bethany and Angelina's friends have children so that's anywhere between ten and fifteen."
"Mom, I don't know Angelina and Bethany's friends." Harvey pointed out.
"But you don't have many real friends so I had to make due. Marcus' friends all live in Canada or they moved out of state." Lily explained.
"That doesn't mean you invite their friends. Aiden doesn't know them. This is Aiden's party isn't it?" Harvey accused.
"Harvey, if it were just your friends it would have been Donna, Mike, Jessica and Louis-"
"You invited Louis? Well, now I'm definitely not going." Harvey said swinging his legs in the seat to cross them.
"Don't you even joke about this Harvey." Lily warned.
"Mom this is getting a little ridiculous. I mean a petting zoo? You don't know if he's allergic to animal dander." Harvey pointed out.
"Is he?"
"I don't know. It hasn't come up yet." Harvey admitted. "Anyway, this party is beginning to sound like 'The Lily Peterson' show rather than 'Aiden's First Birthday'." Harvey pointed out.
Lily scoffed, "You gave me free reign Harvey. Every time I wanted to get your input you said, 'do what you want'." Lily reminded him.
"Mom that didn't mean blow an entire year's paycheck on a party for a kid who can't properly appreciate it." Harvey retorted trying to be polite to a point since even though they have their differences (and that was the nicest way to put it) they had been trying to move past it for the sake of the family. But like he said, this was really ridiculous.
"Is he not appreciative or are you?" Lily accused.
"I told you that I wasn't going to throw one, you pushed and pushed and I let you do it thinking that you wouldn't go overboard but that was a stupid thought because where else but you would I get my overzealous nature? So of course you would do something that would most likely piss me off!" Harvey raged into the phone.
"Harvey...just get over here we can discuss this when you get here and cool off. Aiden's birthday outfit is in the closet. Goodbye Harvey." Lily hung up the phone and Harvey slammed it down on the cradle and huffing out a breath and going back to see if Aiden was awake.
Aiden was playing with stuffed monkey Mike gave him for Christmas. Harvey smiled at the boy, feeling some of the anger dissipate. Aiden turned his head to his father and smiled the Specter smile.
"Hi you. Happy birthday." Harvey cooed. Aiden clapped in response and Harvey picked him up in order to begin getting him ready for his party. Harvey quickly changed Aiden's diaper and set him on the floor. Harvey turned to the closet and opened it seeing what was left for him to put on his son.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me." Harvey muttered seeing the only thing out of place in the organized closet. He pulled out a clear garment bag. In the garment bag was a white suit.
"A sailor suit. A goddamn sailor suit. How cliché is that?" Harvey continued to mutter pulling it out. He sighed and looked down at Aiden who had settled in and started to play with his pant leg. "Well let's see how you look kid." Harvey said stooping down and picking up Aiden in one arm.
Soon Harvey put the clothes on the baby who was more interested in the strings on his shirt. Harvey looked at Aiden and wanted to scream. The kid looked ridiculous. Was this supposed to be cute? He certainly didn't think so. And on top of just wearing the suit, Aiden was supposed to be photographed wearing that? Harvey didn't even want to let Aiden out of their home looking like that. Aiden followed his father's eyes onto his own outfit. Then Aiden looked up and wrinkled his nose in a gesture Harvey was all too familiar with. It was the face Aiden made when Harvey tried to feed him mashed vegetables.
"Uck," Aiden uttered and Harvey had to laugh.
"Yeah, buddy, 'uck' is right." Harvey agreed and poked Aiden on the nose. Aiden leaned back from the touch and giggled. Harvey sighed and let Aiden play with the strings on the shirt of his outfit. He didn't really feel like having a fight with his mother over Aiden's wardrobe. Because even if he said Aiden threw up on the sailor outfit (and Aiden would; Aiden liked to throw up on everything) his mother would accuse him of somehow manipulating his son into throwing up on the outfit. Then it would just be nagging and yelling all day and it would just serve to aggravate him more. He already didn't want to be there for what seemed to be a ten hour party for no reason and if he had to have his mother nagging him the entire time, he might as well not go at all.
That's it... Not go at all. He could skip out of the entire affair or just be fashionably late. That would make a statement to his mother. He would incur her wrath, sure, but she's been on the receiving end of his for years and she was slightly more forgiving than he. Yes, Aiden wouldn't remember what happens today and his mother is more than content catering to her guests because that's what she did best. Harvey could make everyone slightly happy, including himself.
"Hey...you wanna go on a trip buddy?" Harvey asked Aiden as he started pulling off the sailor suit and promptly put it in the garbage next to the changing table. Aiden clapped and flopped onto his back so his father could take off the pants. After changing Aiden into a different outfit Harvey put him into his playpen in the living room to play while Harvey went to change. Once he was finished he turned his phone on airplane mode so no one could call him. He didn't need professional photos in order to make memories. He then put Aiden's jacket on and grabbed the carriage. The two of them went downstairs and Harvey placed Aiden into his car seat in the car with a bottle in his mouth to sustain the baby's hunger. He then settled himself in the driver's seat and drove off, in the opposite direction of where his son's party was meant to be.
Harvey's trip took his to a familiar graveyard that he traveled to once a year to remember one of the most influential people in his life. Every year he goes by himself but this time around he brought his son with him, to remember. Harvey stood in front of the familiar, cold gravestone with his father's name carved into it. The words that he and Marcus picked, Loving Father, glinted underneath his name. Harvey set Aiden standing on the ground, supporting his hands as he couldn't walk on his own yet. He was thankful that it wasn't cold and rainy upstate that day. Harvey led Aiden to the stone and let go of one of his son's hands. Aiden immediate let his hand hit the stone and ran his fingers against the grooves in the stone. Harvey watched Aiden's eyes as they took in his grandfather's name but not comprehending what he was looking at.
"That's where daddy's daddy is." Harvey explained. He squatted down at level with Aiden who was now supporting his entire weight against the gravestone. "And he's watching us, from wherever he is." Aiden turned to his father and leaned into him giving him a hug. Harvey wrapped his arms around the little boy and remained there for a moment or two then he stood up and put Aiden on his hip while they walked together from the cemetery.
He and Aiden eventually made their way to the venue where Aiden's birthday party was being held and while Lily was upset with Harvey for being extremely late, it was all worth it when Aiden smiled and gave his grandmother a kiss. And Harvey did get great pictures that he would treasure for the rest of his life as well as use to embarrass his son mercilessly when it came time to meet the girlfriends.
Harvey decided that their tradition for Aiden's birthday would be to go back to Gordon Specter's grave every year to remember. The other tradition would be to go get a cupcake, smash it against their faces and take a picture with the brightest smiles anyone ever saw.
I hope that it seemed in character. Harvey is a very difficult character to write.
