Peeta stretched himself awake, relishing the feeling in his muscles. His eyes opened slowly and he took in the somewhat familiar comforter and the light green walls that he associated with Katniss's bedroom, and the previous nights activities came rushing back to him, along with a heart-wrenching smile. It had finally happened.
And then he heard the bathroom door open.
Katniss stepped out, dressed in athletic tights and an old t-shirt.
"Oh," she mumbled to herself. "You're up."
Peeta watched as she crossed to the other side of the room to pick up her sneakers.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
Katniss sat down next to him on the bed and fit her shoes onto her feet. "Out for a run."
"Oh."
They were silent as Katniss adjusted her laces and grabbed her watch from the nightstand. She then stood and crossed to the door, pausing with her hand on the handle.
"Look," she said, turning back to him, "I'm gonna go for a run and then I have to go to work. And so do you. But I'll see you with Jo and Thresh at the movie tonight, ok?"
Peeta nodded. "Ok."
"Great," Katniss smiled unconvincingly. "I'll see you tonight. Feel free to help yourself to a shower or anything in the fridge."
And she left.
"Kiss?" Johanna asked Katniss suggestively, holding out the bag of Hershey's Kisses she'd snuck into the theater. The room had just gone dark and the trailers had begun to play.
Katniss scowled. "Jo, I'm serious. This is bad."
Johanna sighed. "Ok, what happened?"
Thresh turned away from the girls and toward Peeta, who spoke just loudly enough for his friend to hear. "We did it."
Johanna and Thresh turned toward each other. "They did it," the whispered before turning back to their respective friends.
"That's great," Thresh told Peeta.
"How was it?" Johanna questioned Katniss.
"I don't know," Peeta sighed.
"The during part was good..." Katniss admitted.
"And then it just...wasn't," Peeta frowned.
"I didn't know what to say," Katniss groaned.
"She couldn't wait to get out of there," Peeta mumbled.
"And now I don't know what to do," they both said.
"What are you going to do?" Johanna and Thresh asked.
"I'll just tell him the truth," Katniss shrugged.
"I'll say that it was a mistake," Peeta sighed.
"I just hope he says it first," Katniss frowned.
"Please, God, let me say it first." Peeta prayed.
Thresh turned to his fiance and put his arm around her shoulders. "Promise me I'll never have to be out there again."
Johanna pressed a kiss to his cheek. "You will never have to be out there again."
Katniss's phone buzzed in her pocket.
Peeta: Lunch today?
Attached was a picture of him holding a tray of cheese buns. Katniss didn't bother responding - she just picked up her purse and walked from her office to the bakery.
Peeta, as expected, was waiting at their usual table with a plate of piping hot cheese buns.
"Hi," he smiled.
"Hey," she replied.
They ate in silence.
On her fifth bun, Katniss looked up. "I'm just gonna say it. Peeta, it was a mistake."
"Oh, thank god you think so too." Peeta exhaled.
"It's not that it wasn't good," Katniss clarified.
Peeta nodded. "It's just that it shouldn't have happened."
They both nodded, satisfied.
And then they were silent again.
