She was different from the other guests, much closer to his age and like himself bored to tears at the sight of all the old people running around and talking politics and other tedious stuff. Dick didn't like these charity functions either but he attended them whenever he could as a favour to Bruce when he was in town. But from across the room, Dick could tell two things: she was in need of someone new to speak with and her wavy blonde hair made her a knockout in that red dress. She looked to be only two or three years older but Dick didn't really care. She was the first great thing that happened at this boring shindig and he wasn't going to spoil his chances. She could tell he was looking her way, and she gave a soft smile and a short wave.
Taking the hint, Dick did not hesitate to coast through the crowd and offered a hand to the young lady when he got within speaking distance do her. "Hi there." He started with a slight shake in his voice.
"Hello handsome." The young lady happily replied.
Dick took a moment to clear his voice and calm his nerves. "I normally don't do this but I couldn't help it. When I see a beautiful woman lost in a sea of such dreary people, I felt the impulse to rescue you. I was wondering if you'd like to have this dance."
The young lady was taken back by Dick's direct approach but gave him a warm smile. "Yes, I'd love to."
Dick took her hand and led her out to the dance floor. Dick was dressed in a smashing tuxedo, so the combination of that and her red dress on the dance floor was hard to miss as they looked like a smashing couple out there alone on the dance floor.
"Thank you." She said as the swayed around the floor. "For a moment I felt I was going drown in this pit of geriatrics." At this point others began to follow their lead and quickly fill the floor with dancing. "Copycats." she sneered playfully.
Dick gave out a soft chuckle of his own, "What's a fun person like you doing at a boring event like this?" he asked, hoping no one over heard him bash the event they were supporting.
"I'm here with my boss, helping him mingle." She answered. "He can get carried away sometimes and if you thought I had a sense of humour... whoa."
"I see." Dick said with a soft chuckle. "So more of a chaperone, right?"
"You could say that." She agreed. "I'd say more of a partner than an assistant."
"So I guess you'll have to take off and look for your boss after our dance is finished?" Dick asked.
"I'm afraid so, sport." She said with a shade of disappointment. "But it was nice to meet you Mr…"
"Grayson." Dick replied. "Dick Grayson."
"Oh, so you're here with Bruce Wayne?" she asked.
"Yeah," Dick answered. "I'm kind of like his partner, co-hosting this event."
"I see, and I thought my boss had a big ego."
"Maybe when we're not working we can get together, go out for coffee?" Dick suggested. He was hoping she would take him up on his offer.
She looked over her shoulder and then back at him, smiling. "You know what? I'd really like that."
"Great! How do I get a hold of you?" Dick then asked.
"I'm kind of hard to find because I'm always on the move." She answered. "Doing deals and stuff all over the place. Is it okay if I leave a message with your foundation?"
"Of course." Dick answered. He even took the time to hand her his card. "Call me."
She took the card from him as the song ended. "I sure will Mr. Grayson." She then gave Dick a soft kiss on the cheek, "Well, I've got to run. Thanks for the dance, handsome. I'll see you around."
"Thank you..." Dick paused for a moment. "Hey, what was your name again?"
She stopped and turned around. "I'm Harley."
"Nice to meet you." Dick called out as she left.
"Good night, sport!" She back called as she ran up the stairs to make sure her boss hadn't gotten into too much trouble. At least not without her...
