He stood there looking deep into her beautiful emerald green eyes. Noticing the way that the warm lighting gave her ivory white skin a warm glow to it. The way her red hair was closer to its natural colour in this light, the blonde highlights having finally grown out a little. Her lips were coated in that suggestive red lipstick she always wore and he'd always admired. Jenny was casually dressed, a style he'd always loved to see her in. The long sleeved black t-shirt hugged her curves whilst the boot cut jeans clung to her backside and thighs. The baggy patterned cardigan made her look warm and at home, and for once: relaxed. He knew looking at her there was a time he wouldn't have dreamed of saying no, it would never have even crossed his mind.
"What happened Jethro?"
"You made a choice."
As they'd watched Carson, smiles on their faces then carried the sleeping boy up to bed, Jethro hadn't been able to banish the wonders of whether things would be different now if she hadn't made the choice that she did, if he'd have stopped her. He wondered if maybe it would a child of their own they were carrying up to bed. A little girl with her mother red hair and her father's blue eyes. Or perhaps a little boy with his father's brown hair and mother's green eyes.
"I had to do what was best for me."
And that wasn't a lie. She had had to do what was best for her, and in that time, at that age she hadn't had falling in love on the cards. Now as she looked back on what she had given up on what she could've had, she realised leaving had been far from what was best.
"I still do."
Then he smiled, because he knew by her saying that that no matter what happened she didn't have any regrets, he wasn't a regret. Therefore it meant that even after everything she had stuck by what she believed. He knew that in his heart everyone should always stick by what you believe in. Now he believed that he saw a glint of hope in her eye. Hope that they could have a future together.
Leaning forward Jethro kissed her cheek. She smiled and flushed at the contact. "Not tonight, but soon." He whispered softly into her ear. So quietly it sent chills down her spine. Yet the smile on both of their faces warmed both of their hearts.
That kiss, so sweat, subtle and gentle, was a promise. A promise locked inside a riddle. It was the beginning of a new life, together, only this time they'd take it slowly. And side by side they might just have a future – together.
Hope it was okay, please review
