A short fic that might be the start of another AU. :)
"I think I want one."
"A what?"
"A baby."
At the sound of those words coming from Jason's mouth, Dick froze. He nearly dropped the plate he was washing to the floor. Every so often, throughout their relationship, Dick the thought of bringing a child into their relationship had crossed his mind. However, he never brought the subject up, he simply figured that Jason would not agree with it. After all, Jason knew what could happen to a child who was apart of their life style.
Jason pressed his back into the counter and sighed, "Don't look at me that way, it was just an idea."
"No, Jay," Dick placed the dish back into the sink and turned off the faucet, "I think it's a great idea, I'm just a little confused."
"Go on."
"Where is this coming from?"
"I don't know." Jason placed his hands on Dick's hips, pulling him in.
Dick knew Jason was lying, he rarely answered anything with 'I don't know', he only did that when he did not want to explain himself for a multitude of different reasons. Afraid that Jason would retract his thought, Dick did not push him any further.
Dick wrapped his arms around Jason, and set his head on his shoulder, "Are you sure you want to do this? I mean think about it, how are we going to handle a baby and going out every night?"
"Alternate nights." Jason suggested. "You go one night, I'll go the next. Simple."
"Okay then, what if one of us doesn't make it home?" Dick inquired. "Do you really want to put a child through that? You know what it's like, to lose your parents."
"Then we be vary careful."
Dick lifted his head to look Jason in the eyes, "Jay, I kind of don't think this is a good idea."
"Really, because I thought you would think the opposite of that." Jason admitted.
"You know that I would love to be a father." he admitted. "But..."
"Sounds like your scared." Jason teased, and gave Dick a quick kiss on the lips. "Remember when that was scary? When our relationship was a giant scary piece of fuck? Now it's not." he pointed out. "It will take a while to get used too, but I think it will be okay."
"Just give me sometime to think." Dick requested, resting his head back on Jason's shoulder.
Jason never brought the subject up again, he waited for Dick to brink it up. After three day's Jason figured Dick was never going to bring up the topic again. He was a little disappointed, but he knew Dick had his reasons.
It was four in the morning, Jason was beginning to doze off since the ecstasy of what they had just done was begging to fade. "Hey, Little Wing..." Dick swung his arm across Jason's chest.
"Hmmm?" Jason struggled to keep his eyes open, he clasped Dick's hand.
"I've been thinking," Dick yawned, "Maybe we should um... Let's go adopt a baby."
Jason smiled, it was one of those rare soft smiles that Dick hardly ever saw. "What made you change your mind?"
"Remember the other day when we went to the store?" Dick rolled over and laid himself on top of Jason to get a better look at his face.
"That was today."
"Whatever, I'm too sleepy to think straight." Dick rolled his eyes, "Anyway, I saw how you stayed with the little girl that got separated from her mother. The way you kept her calm and happy and until her mother found her. It made me realize that maybe we should bring a child into our life. It will be fun."
"Okay then, tomorrow morning we'll go start the process at the orphanage." Jason decided, running his hand through Dick's hair.
