"By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes."

Macbeth (IV, i), William Shakespeare

Prologue.

'I'm moving.'

'Again?'

Loki gives a deep, long-suffering sigh, rubbing the bridge of her nose tiredly. She loves Thor – really, she does! – but he is exhausting at the best of times.

'Yes, brother.'

'Where?'

She scoffs, fiddling absentmindedly fiddling with the Bluetooth headset in her ear as she drives towards her new home. Bon Temps, Louisiana, is a small, close-knit town – and after ten years of living in New York it's a breath of fresh air. But she sure as hell won't be telling her brother that.

'Thor, I'm not telling you where I'm moving.'

He makes an outraged noise of complaint. 'Why not?!'

'Because,' she deadpans, 'the last time I gave you my address you repeatedly showed up unannounced, ate all my food and made a mess when I went out of town for the weekend.'

'It wasn't that bad...' He grumbles – Loki can almost hear his petulant pout.

'I got evicted.'

'...Oh, yeah.' Thor concedes with a sheepish chuckle. 'But as "Victoria Storm's" loving, concerned brother, what if you need my help?'

Loki can't help but huff in amusement. The alias is one in a line of many – an inevitable necessity when you were immortal and playing human. Thor himself is living with his wife and daughter under the name "Thomas" in New Mexico, but he will likely return to Asgard (1) before the decade is out. He's never been as fond of mortals as she is, but he has been known to enjoy the peace and simplicity of Midgard (2), but is always drawn back to the hallowed halls of their father. Loki, who has no use for court life and hasn't actually lived in Asgard for many years, is content with the arrangement.

'We both know you could find me if you needed to.' She assures, and he concedes the point with a reluctant grumble. 'Give Astrid (3) a kiss for me, will you?'

Thor assures her he will – "You're her absolute favourite aunt, you know!" – and hangs up before Loki can rightfully point out that she is her niece's only aunt, and the black-haired woman huffs a laugh as she turns her car up the long driveway of her new home.

From behind the wheel of her black 1965 Mustang, Loki surveys the beautiful house with a smile playing on her lips.

'Well,' she murmurs, 'this'll be an adventure.'

Her words catch on the wind, drifting through the breeze in a promise laced with the magic of her soul, and the residents of Renard Parish give a collective, simultaneous shiver.

Author's Note: This is just a teaser to worm you in – chapters will be longer than this, generally. Yes, this is a fem!Loki story; I took creative license and ran with it. And again, yes, I see her as Angelina Jolie in my head – have since before I even started writing this – but I don't own Ms. Jolie's likeness either. So please don't sue me.

(1) Asgard is the name of the realm of the Æsir (the gods), according to Norse Cosmetology, and one of the Nine Home-worlds that make up Yggdrasill - the "World Tree". Though the Æsir of mythology are powerful deities, in this fic they are a large collective making up the kingdom of Asgard, some of whom are more powerful than others. OFC!Loki is the princess.

(2) Midgard is the name of the realm of humans - Earth, basically - and is another of the Nine. According to Norse Paganism, it sits in the centre of the World Tree.

(3) Astrid is pretty much completely an OFC. Her name is derived from the Old Norse Ássfriđr, an Old Norse compound name composed of the elements áss (a god) and friđr (beautiful, fair). It basically means "divine beauty".

A note on Viking surnames: Though I have no formally earned knowledge on Viking culture, from what I can surmise Viking's did not use "surnames" as we understand them. Instead, they followed the system of patronymics (or rarely matronymics) – essentially, a name that means Son-of-{father's name} or Daughter-of-{father's name}. In Old Norse, we see names such as Skallagrimson (son of Skallagrim), Hakonardottir (daughter of Hakon). Depending on the letters of the end of the parents name, the patronymics/matronymics can change, thus Loki Daughter-of-Odin becomes Loki Odinsdóttir, because the Old Norse name of Odin is Óðinn, and ends in "-nn". I will put a link on my profile if you wish you learn more.
