Transformed
It was not something that happened quickly. It happened very gradually over time, which is why perhaps neither of them noticed it.
Slowly things traveled from house to apartment, vice versa, and back. Closets and drawers were moved around to invite the other clothing in. A small wine rack ended up in Jane's apartment, while Maura's house welcomed a refrigerator in the garage that was filled with all sorts of beer.
Take out containers started to make their way into Maura's kitchen, while Jane's pots and pans were used more frequently than they ever had been.
Jane spent more evenings at the theatre and Maura spent more time in a seat at Fenway.
They carpooled in the Prius to save gas, money, and the environment.
As soon as the other walked into the room, a huge smile adorned each of their faces. Suddenly, there was no one else around.
Their first kiss was something that neither of them had expected.
It was late on a Friday. Jane was in the basement asking about test results. It was the end of a long week and the case she had just gotten was going nowhere fast.
Jane approached Maura while swiping a hand through her tangled hair while pointing her other one at Maura. "Maybe if your team worked a little faster we would have the results back by now."
Maura straightened herself up and huffed taking a step toward Jane. "You know perfectly well that the test takes a long time to complete. I cannot speed up the process any more than you can. Just because you are feeling the effects of not getting the adequate amount of sleep at night doesn't mean that you-"
Maura stopped talking as she realized how close the two of them had gotten. She looked up into Jane's eyes and without a second's hesitation the two of them were kissing.
Neither of them knew who initiated it, but it didn't seem to matter. Jane's hands went around Maura's waist and through her hair, while Maura clutched at Jane's back and neck.
As they thought about it, it was almost ironic that both of them had been blind to all of the signs that had pushed them together.
It was a long time coming.
