Chapter 18

Elena didn't want to face the Salvatore brothers after her talk with Bonnie, so she asked Bonnie to drive her home. The car ride to Elena's house was filled with strained silence. Neither one of them wanting to breach the subject that was on both of their minds, but needing to.

How did it get like this? Bonnie questioned. True, I never meant to develop feelings for Damon. But, it happened and I refuse to apologize for it. But, she argued with herself, Elena is like a sister to me. She is one of the most important relationships in my life.

"So," Elena began, "Does Caroline know about you and Damon?"

Of course, she would ask?! Do I tell her the truth or spare her feelings? Bonnie opted for the truth. "Truth? Yes, she does. She ran into us, before we became an 'us'. Then, I needed to think about what I was doing before I committed to anything. And I knew I had to talk to you, but I didn't want her to say something before I got a chance to talk to you." Bonnie answered in a rush. With a calming breath, she repeated, "Yes. She knows."

"Okay." Elena said slowly. "Stefan obviously knows. And now I know. At least, I'm not the last one to know" Elena added bitterly.

"It wasn't intentional." Bonnie reiterated. Why does this drive to her house seem like it's taking forever?

"I'm sure it wasn't." Elena said impassively.

Bonnie was starting to get aggravated. "I'm not going to apologize for living my life while you were busy stringing Stefan and Damon along with your inability to choose between them."

"Even though one is deserved?"

"Maybe an apology to Damon for not wanting to pursue a relationship out of respect for you. But, no, not to you. I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't steal your boyfriend. I didn't pursue him out of spite. We connected. And we're trying something."

"I just need time to realize everything has changed." Elena announced. "I just need time."

Bonnie let the awkward silence fill the space between them for the rest of the car ride to Elena's house. When they finally arrived, Elena said a quick good-bye before exiting the car and heading inside. Bonnie let out a sigh of relief as Elena went inside. Well, that was fan-effin-tastic! Bonnie mused. I can't wait for that whole situation to play out. She knew Elena would probably discuss everything with Caroline and then Caroline would call her and try to smooth out everything between them. But, at this moment, she didn't care. I am not going to feel guilty about something that makes me smile. I want that feeling. I deserve that feeling.

Pulled out of her rumination by the sound of her cell phone, she was stunned to realize that she was still parked outside of Elena's house.

"Hey sexy. Where'd you go? Girl talk finally over?" Damon questioned.

"Yeah. Then, I dropped Elena home. She needed time to process." Bonnie answered.

"I'll bet." Damon scoffed. "And you? How are you doing?"

"I've been better."

"Well, you should come back. I'm sure I can make you feel better." Damon coaxed. True, he wanted to see her. After all, they were rudely interrupted. But, he was genuinely concerned about her. Although he knew she was strong and could always be counted on to save the day, she was still an emotional teenage girl who just got in a fight with her best friend. He would never claim to be an expert on females, but he knew Bonnie and he knew she would appreciate his support.

Involuntarily smiling by Damon's attempt to cajole her into an admittedly hot make-out session with him, she just wanted to go home to her house, her bed and not think about anything. "As enjoyable as that sounds, I think I'm just going to head home. But, I'll call you later."

"Okay. Talk you to later."

"Bye." Bonnie ended the call and drove home. Her father wasn't home. Now, I really can be alone in my thoughts. Once inside, Bonnie went upstairs to her room and changed into comfortable pajamas. She just wanted to shut her brain off. Bonnie thought she heard a knock on her front door. Did I just hear someone knock on my door? It can't be Elena. Caroline would call as she was letting herself in. She just got off the phone with Damon, so who could that be? She really wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone, but she was curious.

"Who is it?" Bonnie asked while trying to catch a peak of her mystery guest.

"Delivery for Ms. Bonnie Bennett from a not-so-secret admirer." That sounded like Damon.

"Damon?"

"Do you have another not-so-secret admirer?"

"What are you doing here?"

"Can you open the door and let me explain. Talking to your front door is nice, but I'd rather see you."

"Of course." Bonnie opened the door and stood face to face with Damon. She hadn't realized how much she wanted to see him after her conversation with Elena. Now that he was standing in front of her, she was giddy with excitement just being in his presence. Her issues with Elena and any doubts about her relationship with Damon seemed inconsequential compared to the joy she felt when he stared at her like she was the only girl in the world. "And what are you doing here?"

"Can I come in? Or have you forgotten your manners?"

And then he speaks. I have lost my mind. Damon freakin' Salvatore. "Manners? No. But, I'm pretty sure I said that I'd call you later. Strangely, I don't remember picking up a phone." Bonnie teased.

With his signature smirk, Damon answered. "I did say I would talk to you later. We are talking. And it is later."

"True."

"And I have something for you. But, if you don't want it..." Damon drifted with an indifferent shrug.

"Damon, would you like to come in?"

"As long as it's not an inconvenience."

"Of course not." Bonnie held the door wide and stepped back to allow Damon entry. "Please come in. Have a seat on the couch." Bonnie turned and led the way. Damon followed. She doesn't seem too distressed. Maybe the 'girl talk' went okay.

"For the hospitality, these are for you." Damon presented her with a bouquet of pink tulips.

Flabbergasted by the gesture, Bonnie accepted the flowers with a hug. "Thank you, Damon. Not necessary, but thank you." She moved to put the flowers in water.

"There's more?"

"More?" Bonnie echoed. What is he up to?

"Because I've always been such a considerate guy, I brought some movies and ice cream. The pizza is on the way." Yes, he had planned to visit Bonnie anyway, but St. Stefan had called Caroline to alert her of the situation. Of course once she was done talking to Stefan, she demanded to talk to him. Then, she threatened to castrate him if he ever hurt Bonnie and suggested some things to take during his visit to his girlfriend. Damon liked to think that even without Caroline's unwanted advice, he still would've made her smile.

Amazed by his insight, Bonnie embraced him. She was comforted by his presence and completely happy for the first time in a long time. "Thank you Damon. Thank you for coming over."

"As if I would be anywhere else, Bon bon."

They spent the rest of the day together in a world of their own making. The day was complete with movies, pizza and ice cream with some heated make-out sessions and lots of bantering. I just had the best night of my life. Bonnie thought lazily as she snuggled next to Damon.

Damon felt peaceful as Bonnie's warmth clung to him. She wasn't comparing him to his 'perfect' brother. She made him want to be better. She fit perfectly with him. She was perfect for him. He was glad that he realized that Bonnie was who he needed in his life. That Bonnie was who he wanted in his life.
