A Tribute to Makorra Week
"Come on, Mako . . . where are you . . ."
Korra pressed her back against the tree, letting the grooves bite into her spine. Even though she loved the guy, her patience was wearing thin. She had arrived to the clearing where they had agreed to meet with a swelled, booming heart, but after an hour of waiting that swell had thinned to a sliver.
She looked down and shuffled her feet, sliding a few oak leaves apart with thin crunches. Strings of moonlight illuminated her brown breeches, which wasn't much of a darker shade then her own skin. The breeches were welcome against her skin, unlike those fancy dresses she was often required to wear as the Princess of the Water Tribe.
She inwardly cringed at the title. Princess of the Water Tribe.
No. She wasn't. Not anymore.
Korra had always been restless, eager to get out of that stupid pig pen of a castle without an escort or something. But ever since she had met him, she knew that she had to get out of that stupid pig pen of a castle.
It was almost ironic, really. It was forbidden in almost every way possible. She was a Waterbender, he was a Firebender. She was fiery and he was calm. She was a Princess while he was an orphaned beggar.
They were complete opposites yet they attracted.
She'd met him while on a visit to Republic City; the Royals of each country had had to discuss various matters on politics and had chosen it as their rendezvous. She had taken it upon herself to go on a simple stroll and had helped him pay for a bit of food. From then on she found herself slipping out into the streets during her stay to talk with him and his brother. She grew closer and closer with them, the Firebender in particular. And when she was forced to leave the City, she exchanged letters back and forth in secret.
Before she knew it, Princess Korra Arctos of the Water Tribe had fallen in love with the Firebender.
To her amazement, after she had written to him about her feelings, she read that he loved her back. But of course, they couldn't be together, not in their current states . . .
She would have to run away. Run away and meet up with him and his brother at a specific point in the Earth Kingdom, then take it from there.
So run away she did.
She slipped out of the castle easily, having done it time and time again. She ran, ran, ran as fast as she could on horseback.
Now here she was, having arrived an hour ago, waiting . . . waiting . . .
An hour and a half. Two hours. Time dragged by as slow as a turtle-snail.
Three hours.
Three hours and still he was nowhere in sight.
Worry rose up her throat, but quickly she shoved it down. Korra did not worry. It was against everything she stood for.
Yet his location continued to nag at her mind . . . she found her eyelids sagging, bit by bit . . .
"Korra?"
The voice alone was enough to make her eyes snap open, jump up, then smile in wide happiness.
Even in the darkness the outline was familiar. Stocky yet lean build, amber eyes like beads . . .
The Firebender. Mako.
She opened her mouth to say something, but was swiftly interrupted by a whoop. Another figure brandished his way through the trees- more muscular than his brother but shorter.
"Oh yeah!" the second figure said. Bolin, an Earthbender. He formed an arc over his head with his arms, as if stretching. "I've always wanted to see the Earth Kingdom . . . Korra!"
She chuckled. "Hey Bolin," she greeted. "Ready to go soon?"
"You bet!" Bolin momentarily parted from the group to explore the clearing a bit more, leaving the Waterbender and the Firebender alone.
Korra turned back to Mako and opened her mouth, but the words left her brain the moment she began looking for them. So she settled for closing it and averting her eyes down.
Hence he spoke first. He took a few steps forward and placed his hands on his shoulders. They were very firm. "It's so good to see you again."
She looked up. Blue connected with amber.
"It's good to see you two." Her normally husky voice was soft, just a whisper in the night.
All at once, the worry she had suppressed for so long clogged.
"What if something happens?" she asked. "What if the Water Tribe needs me, or what if we're caught and something happens to you-"
"Hey." His head leaned in closer, eradicating distance between the two of them. He was so close that she could feel his breath tickling her nose. "It'll be all right. We'll manage- I know we will."
He tucked a loose strand of black and nestled it behind her ear. Korra's lips tugged into a smile, and together the two of them looked ahead.
"Yeah. We will."
