Chapter 1

Ring…Ring...Ring…

The annoyingly sound was beeping loudly in my ear, stirring me from my deep slumber. I opened one eye to see my alarm clock flashing 7.45on my nightstand. Groaning loudly, I turned and shoved a pillow over my head in an attempt to block out the noise.

Having been completely planning on staying in bed for the next hour, I realised with a start that I had to go to work – and my mother would surely have a fit if I was late…again.

My mother – if you could even call her that – worked at an F.B.I agency that my old man, Abe Mazur, was running. Abe Mazur and Janine Hathaway were both highly respected agents, having built up strong reputations over their dedicated years fighting bad guys and being awesome. As soon as I had turned 18, I joined the family business and – despite what my dear mother says – I have worked up a reputation almost as high as them. Being the boss's daughter, naturally I was well respected. But I was also pretty kick-ass at my job, and everyone knew it.

Quite possibly the only drawback however, was having to get up this early.

Usually, I was to be at the office for 8am, but of course Abe was fairly lenient with me. My mother on the other hand…not so much. I eventually woke myself up enough to knock off the irritating alarm and throw back my covers. I left the warmth of my bed and jumped into my shower, before changing and grabbing my keys.

I was already late by the time I was on the road…and starving. And so I figured it couldn't possibly hurt to stop by the small coffee shop that my best Lissa was working at in order to pay for her nursing education.

Lissa and I had known each other since kindergarten. I never had a sister – or any sibling for that matter, due to my parents having me evidently by accident - but Lissa is more like a sister to me than anyone would have ever been.

I entered the coffee shop, shooting a man-eater smile at the waiters who knew me from my daily visits on the way to work. Lissa, seeing this, rolled her eyes at my antics. As I approached her, it was hard to ignore the stares I was getting from random customers sitting around the café. Lissa on the other hand, never seemed to notice these things. We were both 22 – and pretty damn hot. However, Lissa didn't see herself as the attractive one. With her naturally platinum blonde hair, striking jade green eyes and killer model-like body, I had to disagree. She was freaking gorgeous! But she constantly told me how envious she was of my slightly curvier, 'exotic, desert princess' look. It wasn't that I disagreed with her, because I didn't. I knew I was pretty hot – especially on a good day. With my dark brown, almost black hair, dark brown eyes, slim waist but fairly large bust – men lusted after me.

But for Lissa? They would fall down onto their hands and knees and worship her.

"Late again, Rose?" she gave me a knowing look and chuckled, handing me my usual; two doughnuts and a cup of coffee.

"Are you really surprised?" I replied teasingly. Lissa let out a laugh. "Although, honestly, I'm dreading having to face the wrath of my mother if I walk in late again."

"You go," she gestured for me to hurry. "I got this; you give us enough business anyway."

"Thanks, Liss," I sent her a grin and she went to serve her next customer. I left the coffee shop and hurried to my car, hoping that something – anything – had happened to my mother on the way to work and by some miracle, I would arrive before her.

Of course, miracle's didn't like me, and I sighed audibly upon seeing her small frame in the lobby, speaking in what looked like hushed tones with another agent.

There was no way I'd be able to go through the front door and sneak past without her seeing me...

Desperate times called for desperate measures.

I dashed back to my car and grabbed the crowbar that I kept hidden under the driver's seat for emergencies such as this. Thankfully, my office was on the ground floor, making my upcoming feat much easier. I arrived at the far side of the building and placed the crowbar in between my window and it's frame. After some sheer force, I managed to pry it open.

Unfortunately, the window wasn't very large. It was also located quite high up on the wall; meaning I had quite a fall on the other side. However, I had to do what I had to do.

And that was climb butt-first through the opening. Landing on my feet, I smiled with pride at getting in unnoticed and straightened out my fairly ruffled clothes.

Well, I got in almost unnoticed anyway. A low clearing of a throat alerted me to the fact that there was someone else in my office. I spun around in surprise, and relaxed when I saw that it was only Abe, who was looking at me in amusement.

"Rose." He said in greeting, sounding half amused and half exasperated.

"Old man." I copied his tone, folding my arms and lifting my chin daringly. I was probably the only person in this building who would dare challenge Abe. Well, me and my mother, that was.

"You sure know how to make an entrance, that's for sure," he said with what almost sounded like admiration. "A chip off the old block." I gave him my cheekiest grin.

"Don't worry," he said after a few moments. His words were coupled with a sly wink. "I won't tell your mother."

I chuckled to myself and shook my head as he left, shutting my door gently behind himself. Abe was technically my biological father, although I hadn't known him growing up. We had finally been introduced about six years ago and immediately struck up an odd bond due to our many similarities. We weren't particularly close, as such – but I was closer with him than I was my mother, who constanty treated me like the mistake I clearly was.

After putting my crowbar away in a safe place, I set into sorting out some paperwork on my desk. It was nothing major; just a small case I had agreed to give a hand on. As I was going through the innumerable sheets of paper, a text came through on my phone from Lissa, asking me if I wanted to go to Christian's club that night. Seeing as though it was Friday and I didn't work weekends, I quickly replied, agreeing. I never turned down a chance to go out on the town.

Christian was Lissa's long-term boyfriend. They had been going out since we were in freshmen year of high school. Honestly, I hadn't liked him at first because of his extremely irritating, sarcastic personality…but he had grown on me. Sort of like a wart. He was like a brother to me. Christian owned Club Violet –The hottest nightspot in town. We went there quite often – mostly because Lissa and I always got in for free, and if we were lucky, there would be a couple of drinks on the house too.

Another advantage; generally, it was crawling with hot men of all calibres.

I wasn't exactly known for my innocence.

Within a minute, I had another message from Lissa asking if we should make a big night of it – meaning she would ask our girlfriends, and I would ask the guys, would worked with me here at the office.

Eddie and Mason were my two best guy friends. I had also known them since kindergarten. Lissa and I had met Mia and Sydney in Middle school and a sort of group of inseparable friends had formed. Through high school, we had managed to stick together and come out unscathed – with another member of course; Christian.

I grinned at the idea of the lot of us going out tonight – it hadn't happened in a while for many reasons, although most were work or college-related. I pushed myself up and out of my chair to go on a search for Eddie and Mason.

Unfortunately, I hadn't taken three steps out of my door when-

"Rosemarie!" My mother's angry voice came from my left. I winced and groaned inwardly. This was the last thing I needed. I turned in the direction of her voice, bracing myself for her fury.

My mother – in all of her five-foot glory - stomped down the corridor towards me, immediately grabbing everybody's attention. I honestly didn't know why people still found our fights so interesting – my mom and I fought on a daily basis…over things that meant both nothing and everything. You'd have thought that the novelty would have worn off by now.

"Where have you been?" she demanded as she reached me. She came to a halt as close as she possibly could to my face.

"In my office," I replied, faking surprise and innocence and discreetly taking a step backwards, away from her horrid glare.

"Don't give me that shit, Rosemarie," she snapped. "I've been here since 7.30 and there's been no sign of you until now."

I was in the process of thinking how I could possibly defend myself when Abe came to my rescue.

"I saw her this morning, Janine." He said, calmly, subtlety stepping in between us. "She's been here all along." His voice wasn't defensive, not in the slightest…but there was an authority there, as well as a dangerous note – almost as if daring her to question him.

My mother looked slightly flustered but thankfully, in the end she decided it wasn't worth it and stomped back to her own office.

Abe sent another wink my way before walking in the other direction. I found myself smiling at his back.

"Close one, Hathaway."

My smile transformed to a grin when I heard that voice; it was exactly who I was looking for.

I turned to see my two best guy friends smirking at me.

"Ignore her…I've been looking for you two," I explained to them what Lissa's plan was for tonight and they agreed more than willingly. As I said, it had been a long time since we'd had the time or money to go out and blow our cash on booze and whatever else we could get our hands on. Quickly, I texted Lissa back the answers and found out that Mia and Sydney were both up for it as well.

So naturally, the majority of my work day was spent planning out what I was going to wear. When 6.30pm rolled around, I decided I'd had enough of lounging around in my comfy chair and left the office for home. Upon my arrival, I stuffed everything I would need into bag – including my new, tight, red dress that I had bought the previous weekend – and headed to Mia's and Sydney's apartment, where we were to get ready.

When I got there, the three girls were already getting ready. I greeted them and began prepping myself.

"Hurry up and get ready, Rose," Lissa urged me. "We're leaving in an hour."

I ran into one of the bathrooms and quickly applied some light makeup and let my hair fall down to my waist in thick, dark curls. When that was done, I pulled on my favourite red lace bra and my sexy, matching panties. I pulled on my new dress over my head, followed by my black heels and…voila! I was ready…and I looked hot.

Now the only thing I had to do was find me a guy who was equally as hot to take home tonight.

Upon our arrival at the club, Christian greeted us all and led us to the best table in the place. He left for a couple of minutes and returned with a tray of drinks; officially starting our tab. Honestly, it was pretty awesome having a friend who owned the greatest club in town.

Smaller conversations started up around the table as we all settled into our booth and began drowning in our drinks. Me, on the other hand…I was a little busy…

I was occupied scouring the room, looking for someone who might be my potential lover for the night.

I wasn't having much look when suddenly, my eyes drifted over to the bar and locked with a pair of deep, gorgeous brown ones. I could feel my skin heat immediately under the intense gaze he was sending my way, and I made sure to let him know with a wink that I was most definitely interested.

Perfect.
