(Welcome to the last chapter of the fanfiction! Thank you for reading and I hope you all enjoyed it! There will be a bonus chapter, and I should hopefully have that posted soon~ Anyways, onwards to the end~)
. . .
Sleeping and watching. That was what Korra's life consisted of for the next day and a half. She sat in her uncomfortable chair by Bolin's bedside as he slept. Though it was fairly difficult to sleep in, so she tended to do more watching than sleeping. He was unconscious for so long, as doctors and nurses constantly checked on him. When they weren't around, Korra couldn't help but try to apply from of her Waterbending healing to his rash, or to his forehead to try to cool his fever.
He was getting better. It was hard to see the gradual change when Korra was there constantly. If she had perhaps left at night and then come back twenty-four hours later, she would notice more easily that the rash wasn't as bright red, and that it had stopped spreading. At least she knew from the nurses that his fever has gone down to low grade.
More than anything, she wanted to talk with him. She wanted to hear Bolin say that he was going to be fine, and that he was feeling better. It took a lot of self-restraint, but Korra made no direct effort to walk him up. Ignoring the short incident when she had gone around the room, opening and closing drawers and doors while hoping that the noise would wake him up. But that was only once.
As she felt a little downtrodden from the very slow progress, Pabu seemed to take notice. He jumped from the bed to her lap, crawling up her arm and onto her shoulder. Korra couldn't help but chuckle at the feeling of his fur brushing up against her chin as he circled her neck. Knowing what he wanted, she pulled a little mint candy out of her pocket that she had taken from the reception area, and gave it to Pabu. The fire ferret snatched it up in his mouth and moved to sit on the young Avatar's head while munching on his treat.
"Traitor..." a quiet voice hoarsely let out.
Korra jumped a little in surprise as Pabu grabbed onto her hair. She looked to Bolin, whose eyes were half open as he watched them with a small smile.
"Bolin! You're awake," Korra happily said. She got up from her chair and carefully sat on the edge of his bed, getting a closer look at him and feeling his forehead with a smile. Pabu ditched Korra's head to cuddle against Bolin's neck.
He let out a small chuckle, which turned into a few coughs. "How long..."
"A few days... You were in and out of it while we traveled, but sort of conked out when we got here," Korra said, putting it lightly as if it were no big deal, when inside it made her chest ache to remember how worried she had been.
"I remember... a bit," Bolin quietly said. "Most of it's... foggy."
"Yeah, you did say some weird stuff on the way over," Korra said. Like calling for his mother... and seeing Amon in the snow...
"Like what?" Bolin asked with a small smile.
Korra remembered everything. She looked away and just shook her head a little. She didn't want to relive any of that, at all.
"... That bad, huh?" Bolin sighed. "Well... we made it... I'm okay..."
Korra nodded with a smile, glad for that. "Master Tenzin went to get Mako. He should be back soon," she said.
"Good... good..." Bolin let out, looking a bit sleepy again.
Korra chuckled a little. "Get some rest. You could use it," she said, getting up and going to sit on the chair again.
Bolin gave a small nod in reply, and was asleep again within the minute.
. . .
The next day, Mako arrived at the hospital. Tenzin had flown Oogi from the Southern Water Tribe Compound to the hospital in Republic City. Asami and Mako hurriedly entered the building and got the room number from the receptionist. Despite Tenzin informing him that Bolin's condition was relatively good, Mako had gone right back to worrying again. Asami didn't say anything this time, knowing that his anxiety could only be cured by seeing his little brother again.
They headed upstairs and around the corner, in the right direction. Mako quickened his step as he saw the room number up ahead. He didn't bother knocking, just walking right in through the partially open door.
Bolin was awake and slowly eating a late breakfast as Korra joked and talked with him. They were distracted from what they were doing as the Firebender suddenly stepped in.
"Bo..." he let out with a small and relieved smile at the sight of the other.
"Mako," Bolin responded in return, trying to sit up a bit more. Korra helped him as Mako rushed over to hug his little brother.
"I'm so glad that you're okay..." Mako said, feeling his anxiety melt away. He held Bolin for a short while, then backed off to look at him again. Asami had gone to stand beside Korra, lightly patting her on the shoulder with a relieved smile.
"It was... quite the trip... But I feel better," Bolin promised him.
"The doctor said he could leave tomorrow. As long as he rests and takes the medicine," Korra informed Mako. She took up, and went to unwrap Mako's scarf from her own neck. "I believe this belongs to you."
Mako approached her and wrapped his arms around Korra, lifting her a bit as he held her close. "Thank you... Thank you so much, Korra... You saved him..." he thanked her profusely. Korra ignored how sore she felt in his grasp and hugged him in return.
When he let her go, she wrapped the scarf back around his neck again.
"I owe you, big time," Mako said with a small smile.
"I'd do anything for my friends. But I suppose some noodles from Narook's Seaweed Noodlery might make good repayment," Korra joked and laughed.
They all chuckled a bit together at that, glad to have a bit of normalcy return.
"When Bolin's better, I'll treat everyone to some," Mako promised.
"I was kidding, but if you're serious, then excellent! Maybe get some sea plum dessert, I think Bolin grew a taste for that," Korra said.
Bolin shook his head. "No... no, no, no..." he let out, shuddering at the memory of the taste.
Reunited, the group was happy to be together again. Korra and Bolin had faced a lot on the journey, some of which she probably would never tell Mako. She was glad that they had made it safely and on time. Everything would fine.
. . .
(And that's the end! This chapter was a little shorter than planned, but I couldn't really think of anything else to cover~ At some point soon, I'll write a bonus chapter for this story. I've had a few requests that are generally the same thing, so it shouldn't be too hard to write. The main story is over, but stayed tuned for the extra chapter~ Thanks for reading!)
