Peter stared into the mirror. Sometimes he had a hard time with the mirror. He looked at his face and couldn't quite believe it was his. The face that he hid from the world, the face that so many wanted to pull a mask off of. Sometimes he had a hard time taking off his mask, too. He always felt like someone was watching him. He just had a hard time with his face nowadays.

He lifted a hand to his face and traced the scars with a finger. In his hair line, the two across the bridge of his nose, scars where he had been hit and his lip had split. All of them had faded, you could tell which ones were less recent. But the memories of how he got them were still fresh, and they still hurt. The scars, as well as the memories, were forever a part of him. Not to mention the things that hadn't physically scarred.

Peter's finger found what would be his newest scar in a few weeks. A cut across his cheek that overlapped onto his ear. The Kleenex he used to try to stop the bleeding with was soaked with crimson red. He pulled it off and replaced it with a wet rag. Once he had mopped up the blood and could once again see the skin underneath, he realized there was a notch in his ear. A little triangle cut out if his ear, totally gone. He made a face in the mirror.

"It's cute. Makes you look like a kitty. Maybe we'll change your name to Spider-Kitty."

Peter spotted her in the mirror, leaning against the open bathroom door. Gwen nodded with an all too serious look on her face. "Somehow, that's not as intimidating." He said with a lopsided grin.

"Oh, because all wanted criminals and psychos in masks are terrified of spiders." She pushed away from the door, coming to look at his reflection with him. She tugged on his ear. "I mean it, I think it's cute."

Peter smiled down at her and suddenly the dark thoughts that had been haunting his mind melted away. Gwen just had that effect on him. She could do something as simple as look at him and that made his world right again. And he knew as she pressed her lips against his, she couldn't have cared less that there were scars there. Peter found comfort in that; knowing that no matter how bad it got, no matter how many mental and physical scars he collected, she'd love him no matter what.
