"Crying for the Moon"
by Yo, 6/15/12 at 231 words

As he lies back against crimson satin sheets, his flesh bare to the cold night, Light stares up at the full moon hanging low in the sky. The skylight above can't hide anything from him. Nor can he, from the laughing silver moon.

You're crying for the moon, he thinks to himself because he wants something he can never have.

He reaches a pale, slender hand up toward the orb, his palm stretching wide across the orb's center hoping to wipe that smirk off her face. If the moon had a gender, it was female—she was haughty and full of secrets and beguiling lies; masks and regrets; pining for a lover she'd never know in intimacy because the sun would never grace her with his blinding light.

Light hated the moon in that moment. We are the same, she and I—a mangled whisper at the back of his mind. L's haunting countenance flashes before his mind's eye…

"No!" Light jerks straight up in his bed, tearing his auburn hair from side to side, clenching his eyes tight.

Won't think of him! Won't think…The mantra dies in his thoughts and a single tear slips from his red-brown eyes.

Love, love, dead, love—his heart beats an erratic rhythm. And he can't just hide it or erase it.

Because he can't wipe away what he feels for the detective. Ever.
