When one wakes up in the middle of the night it's often hard to go back to sleep; but when one wakes up from a nightmare it's nearly impossible Korra discovers as she finds herself sitting up in bed, breathing hard and drenched in sweat.
"Bad dream…" she whispers to herself, "that's all." She coaxes herself to lie back down, but finds that she is far too restless to sleep. At first she lays there, tossing and turning, but after awhile not even that fulfills her need to move. Korra doesn't want to lay still anymore, she needs to get up and do something, something useful other than sleep.
The young Avatar quickly and quietly gets up from bed, getting dressed and pulling a coat on as she leaves her bedroom. As she walks outside she finds that the moon is high and bright, lighting a path straight to the airbending gates. She sighs, watching as one or two of the gates swing, but the breeze isn't strong enough to move them for her to weave through.
"Fine," she mumbles, practicing the stances Tenzin taught her instead, trying to see if the late night air changed anything for her airbending.
"Korra?" The young Avatar jumps almost ten feet in the air, still uneasy from her dream, before turning and seeing Mako.
"Uh, hey," Korra says, taking a deep breath to calm herself as he walks over to her.
Mako scratches the back of his neck, "I didn't mean to scare you. What are you doing up? You should be sound asleep after…everything."
Korra bit her lip, shrugging, "I couldn't sleep," she admitted, not wanting to say she had awoke from a nightmare. "What are you doing awake?" she asked, raising her eyebrows at him.
He shrugged, "Do you want my honest answer?" He asks, watching her nod. "Well," he looks away from her, shrugging again, "I wanted to know you were still safe." He whispered. "I was too restless to sleep."
Korra sighs, sitting down on a nearby rock and motioning for him to join her. He does , saying, "Korra… I really was worried." He said, looking at her and the fading scars on her arms, her shoulders, and her cheeks.
She smiles a bit, "It seems like everyone was." She whispered, looking out at the gates and trees before them.
He watches her for a moment, seeing her eyes downcast and turn away, "Hey, what's wrong?" he asks, taking on a tone of sympathy as he reached out to her.
She shakes her head, "It-it's nothing. I should probably just go back and try to sleep." She mumbles, getting up and moving to walk away. Mako is quick to follow her though, reaching out and grabbing her wrist.
"Korra wait," He says, looking at her, "You aren't okay." He states, placing both hands on her shoulders and looking into her face, "What's wrong?" he asks, his caring, or parental side, taking over.
Korra's eyes uncharacteristically fill with tears and she doesn't resist as Mako pulls her into a hug, "I…I had a nightmare. A terrible one… with Tarrlok, and bloodbending" She explains, trying her hardest to keep her sobs under control as they threaten to jump up her throat.
"Shh," Mako interjects, trying to be comforting as he rubs her back, "It's okay; it was only a dream Korra. You're okay, you're safe." He whispers, pulling her tighter against him. You're safe.
