Okay so I got this out quicker than I had intended.
I've read back over the story and realise that it seems all jumbled up - that is to say, not all of the events that have happened (or will happen) coincide with the actual manga and/or anime (depending on what you read and watch)
Just bare with me for that haha, Im working on the basis that most of the events of Shippuden havent happened yet, just to clear everything up.
We are basically a bit after Sasuke kills Orochimaru.
Recap:
"So what if you are right. What does it prove? That we now know the name of another Akatsuki member? The bingo book doesnt list any of Hidans abilities. Nothing. Its just a name..."
Kakashi smiled under his mask.
"It proves that Yumi is starting to remember."
The rain in Amegakure hammered down as it always had, unrelenting in its eternal downpour.
The small room at the top of the villages tallest tower had been inhabited for several hours now, by a man and an owl.
Though strange the pair may have seemed, a serious conversation was underway.
"I want to go to the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Yumi needs me."
Pein shook his head, silently denying the owls request.
"If you were to show up now too many questions would be asked."
Hibiki seemed to ponder this.
Unlike Yumi, he had not lost his memory and would have no excuse to deny the Hokage of her questionings.
Even if he lied and told the Hidden Leaf ninjas that he had been locked away in a dark room for the extent of their capture, he would still have been able to use his dojutsu to see through Yumis eyes.
As much as he hated to admit it, Pein was probably right.
His showing up in Konoha now would do more damage than good.
"In the meantime then what do we do? I am still unable to see through Yumi's eyes via the dojutsu... Its almost like she has forgotten how to use it."
"That's because she probably has."
The owl sighed and closed his eyes.
Nothing was going right anymore...
Just as the conversation between Pein and Hibiki ended, did Kakuzu make himself known at the rooms entrance.
In his fist was clutched a piece of paper which he handed to Pein for inspection as he approached the duo.
"Its a message from Sasori."
Pein nodded and scanned the note briefly.
It had previously come to the attention of Pein that Sunagakure shinobi had discovered an old base and were in the process of examining it.
The Akatsuki hadnt been seen for quite a while and Pein did not want their inactivity to appear suspicious.
Above all else, the enemy must not think the Akatsuki weak or vulnerable.
He had ordered Sasori and Deidara out on a mission - to kill or kidnap someone of importance from Sunagakure.
As it happened, the duo had determined upon arriving in Sunagakure that just causing destruction and chaos would be enough to remind the Kazekage that the Akatsuki were still active.
100 puppets and a few pouches of exploding clay would almost certainly do that.
Pein nodded in approval.
It was a senseless attack but that sort of thing was what gave them edge.
Kakuzu cleared his throat, "There's something else, Itachi has deemed Hidan fully healed."
Ahh... That is good news indeed.
"If thats the case then I have a mission for you both."
Yumi stood in the bathroom of the apartment she shared with Kakashi in a singlet top and shorts.
She sighed wearily as she gazed into the mirror at the thick stitching in her left arm.
Lately she had taken to wearng long sleeves to cover it up and to hide it from Kakashi - she was certain he didnt know about it.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, Yumi was sure that she didnt acquire this injury during her time in Konoha.
The scarred flesh looked very newly healed and though she had searched through Kakashi's photo album, she could find no sign of the injury in his photographs.
As she fingered the thick stitches a memory violently forced itself into her mind.
"Get down!"
A man with long blonde hair and a black cloak with red clouds was protectively covering her body with his.
Yumi frightfully glanced through the gap in his thick hair in time to watch a man with silver hair, black and white skin markings and the same black cloak to shriek in fright at a little white bird that was chasing him.
But no... it wasnt a normal bird... it was made of something earthy... like clay...
It made contact with the man almost in slow motion, and as it did, it exploded in a fireball.
There was a brief pause before a searing pain erupted down Yumi's arm and she screamed.
The blonde man rolled her over onto her back, an expression of panic crossing his face.
"Yumi!"
A shorter man with red hair and boyish features was pushing the blonde aside.
Another sharp sting of pain made Yumi glance to her arm and watch as the redhead tried to stem the bleeding, he was yelling orders at the blonde but Yumi couldnt hear.
Her ears were still ringing from the explosion.
Everything was going fuzzy...
She looked to the side and briefly saw an arm lying about a metre away before the redheaded man brought her head to face forwards.
He looked her in the eyes as he tried to get her to focus.
"Yumi!"
"Yumi...? Yumi!"
A gentle slap to the face brought Yumi out of her memory.
She looked up and into the worried eyes of Kakashi.
His brow was furrowed and he tilted his head at her.
"Are you okay?"
Yumi shook her head, then nodded.
Her breathing was heavy and she realized she must have zoned out.
What a terrible memory.
As she tried to focus, Yumi became aware of someone touching her upper arm and noticed the room suddenly went very quiet.
She glanced to the Copy Nin, who was now gazing down at her arm in shock.
He brushed his fingers over the scarred flesh and thick stitching.
"How did you get this...?"
He mustnt have expected an answer as the question came out as more of a statement, almost as though he was wondering it to himself.
Yumi however, now knew the answer and she hesitantly answered him as she tried to recall the memory.
"There... there was an explosion... Those two men I drew were there. Do you remember the pictures I drew?"
Kakashi nodded with an eye widened in sorrow as she continued.
"The blonde one tried to save me from the blast... It was far away but somehow my arm still came off... There was a redhead who started trying to stop the bleeding... And... the man with the tattoos was there as well... He was running away and screaming.."
Yumi finished talking, a haunted look in her eyes and it occurred to Kakashi that even though she had joined the Akatsuki, she was never safe from them.
A whole arm... That was no flesh wound.
But something didnt make sense here.
If the Akatsuki were a bunch of ruthless criminals as they had been made out to be, why would they be protecting her and trying to stem the bleeding?
Kakashi shook his head.
It didnt matter, what did matter was that Yumi was remembering things.
During his private chat with the hokage the previous day, Kakashi had managed to convince Tsunade that allowing Yumi back on easy missions would help her fall back into a normal routine.
Tsunade had reluctantly agreed, all the while mouthing off about how irritatingly convincing ninjas could be.
It was something though, afterall, perhaps focusing on regaining ones memories wasnt the answer.
Maybe Yumi just needed to fall back into her old routine and let the memories come back at their own pace.
There came a knock at the apartment door and Kakashi turned his thoughts away from Yumi and went to answer it, leaving the woman to finish up in the bathroom.
They werent expecting anyone so Kakashi assumed it was Iruka come to check up on them both.
The chunnin had taken to hanging out with Yumi and Kakashi, hoping that his presence would speed up Yumi's memory recovery.
As it was, it was not Iruka, rather his hyperactive ex-student.
"Kakashi sensei, we have a mission."
The Copy Nin took the mission scroll Naruto offered him and read it quickly.
Apparently, two unknown adversaries had been attacking and causing trouble in Sunagakure.
The Kazekage had sent out ninja to give chase but had requested that Konoha shinobi cut off the two criminals and aid in the fighting.
This would be an easy enough mission for Yumi to start with.
It probably wouldnt even require much fighting on her part.
Kakashi nodded to Naruto and asked him to wait at the village gates for him and Yumi to get ready.
The orange-clad future hokage was more than happy to comply and had already bounced out of sight before Kakashi had shut the apartment door.
No sooner had Naruto disappeared, did Yumi reappear, her head tilted with wonder at who had been at the door.
She recieved a cheery one eyes smiled.
"Your first mission back. Go get ready. Its a simple one, we just have to round up two ninja who have been causing trouble in Suna. It shouldnt take long."
Yumi smiled back to him and left the room to change out of her casual clothes and into her jounin garb.
If she was to be honest, she was looking forward to a little bit of action.
Despite losing most of her memories, her ability to fight seemed hardwired into her system and she had still been able to fight Kakashi, nearly on par with him.
Yes... It would be good to get out and have some fresh air.
Though she understood his need and want to protect her, Kakashi's presence had become suffocating at times and the claustrophobia Yumi got from being cooped up for so long was getting to her a little bit.
As she finished getting ready, there was a knock on the door and Kakashi called from the other side,
"Are you ready to go?"
Yumi took a deep breath and smiled.
"I'm ready."
Okay this was a short chapter, but I needed to get it out before I write what happens next because I think the next chapter is going to be long..
