So Out of Your League

Unexpected Surprises

Lucas was extremely excited to get to school the next day. His whole being was about to burst with confetti.

He bounced in his seat as he ate his cereal, which earned him some weird eyeballing from Claus.

He hummed to himself on the bus ride to school, causing other students around him to give him funny looks while whispering among themselves about "mental issues."

And he nearly skipped down the walkway leading to the school building, making everyone around him pretend nothing unusual was happening.

Lucas remained antsy throughout the day. He really wanted his history period to come because he really wanted to see Ness. Like, the urge was greater than peeing.

The chance to talk to Ness at lunch earlier didn't come around because Lucas could not, for the life of him, locate the other boy. He assumed Ness must have had something to do during that period. Instead, he conversed with Red and told the boy all about his accomplishments. Red was surprised, to say the least. Lucas felt a great rush of satisfaction run through his body.

They had another free day in history, so when Lucas got to the classroom he immediately waltzed over to Ness's desk, trying - and failing - to hide a ridiculous smile.

"Hi, Ness," Lucas greeted his friend, who currently had his head face-down on his desk. At the sound of Lucas's voice, though, he brought his face up and looked at the other. With piercing violet eyes, might I add.

"What do you want?"

The tone was so unexpected Lucas just about fell over. What?

Mouth agape, Lucas was at a loss for words. How could he respond to that?! Ness wasn't gonna start acting all pissy around Lucas like before, was he?

But of course he is. Why wouldn't he? I suffer from all misfortunes imaginable.

"Nothing. I was just, uh, wondering about the . . . project." Lucas tried to save himself some dignity, but he was pretty sure that didn't work. Better sign them papers to hell already.

Ness didn't bother keeping eye contact. "I finished it after you left and I turned it in already. Since it was basically done I didn't see why we needed to keep it any longer."

Oh. Okay.

So.

No more get-togethers for the project then.

Lucas wanted to bawl.

". . . Great." Lucas said through clenched teeth, feeling like they were going to be crushed under the pressure of his mouth. Just something else that could go wrong. It's not like it mattered though, right?

Ness lied his head back down on the table and left Lucas to his own devices. Lucas had to suppress a scream. He almost felt like taking Ness by the neck and throttling him. But Ness would probably beat the crap out of him a second later if he got anywhere near him.

Lucas wandered back to his seat, pondering over the previous night.

Was the hug too much for Ness? Did he push him beyond his comfort zone? But Ness was being so friendly towards him . . .

Lucas slammed his forehead onto the desk. Why did Ness have to be so confusing?!

If Ness did hate him, he could just say so. Though Lucas would rather that not be the case. He'd most likely find himself in a comatose state in the hospital due to shock. And then Claus would bitch at him and say things like how irresponsible he was. Oh boo-hoo! Claus didn't matter. Ness didn't matter. Nothing mattered! Everything was stupid! Including this new town full of stupid people!

I hate everything. Except for Boney. Boney's the only good thing left.

Lucas kept up that train of thought for the rest of the day.

Ness didn't end up apologizing or anything after being so rude to Lucas in history, and Lucas didn't try to get any words out of him. He went home with a scowl on his face.

"What's up, bro?"

Claus entered the bedroom, where Lucas currently resided. He made a nest within a pile of blankets on his bed and declared that he was "hibernating" for the rest of the year. Silly Lucas. Didn't he know that is wasn't winter?

Claus eyed the blankets distastefully. "Y'know, you can't stay in there forever."

A muffled voice spoke from the mountain of blankets, "And why not?"

"Because your food will get cold, and you hate cold food. Remember last time you had cold food?" Lucas did. The event included a blowtorch.

He uncovered himself and took a plate from Claus, dejectedly eating some of the food off of it. Claus sat down next to him, awkwardly putting an arm around his brother's shoulders. He wasn't the best at comforting others; last time he tried to do anything of the sort it resulted in Lucas running to his mother about how much of a bully he was, and that was only one month ago. But he did try to offer solace to Lucas right now.

"Things get better, Lucas. You can't just stay wrapped up in bed all day just because you didn't have a good time at school," he paused, thinking about what to say next. "I'm not sure what happened, but you can't let it ruin your life."

Lucas knew Claus was right. This wasn't like him. He was handling it even worse then the pelican incident.

"I know."

Worming his way out of the blankets, Lucas got up from the bed and put his dish on his dresser - he couldn't be bothered to take a trip downstairs right now and face Hinawa. Besides, it was late, and he really wanted to get some rest before school tomorrow.

Ugh. School.

The though almost made him want to puke.

"I'm gonna go to bed now, okay?" Claus nodded and left Lucas to himself. He only hoped that come tomorrow his brother would be back to normal, at least somewhat.

Lucas picked at his toast, experimentally scratching off the blackened bits.

"Don't play with your food, Lucas." Claus said, not even bothering to look up from his own breakfast.

Lucas threw the toast at him. "I'm not."

Unlike yesterday, Lucas's mood had brightened considerably. All he really needed was a good night's rest and everything seemed to go back to normal. Who cared about Ness anyway?

He sniffled.

"Don't you even think about starting," his brother warned, flicking the toast crumbs off of his face. Lucas stuck his tongue out. His brother was so mean.

Hinawa shooed them off to the bus stop a few minutes later and it wasn't long before the two boys reached the school of disappointment and doom.

Lucas entertained himself for the first half of the day by chanting the ABC's underneath his breath. He was secretly timing himself to see how many times he could say it before lunch. Maybe he could set a world record.

Yeah, and then I'll be the popular one, not Ness. See how he likes that.

Once he entered the cafeteria he stopped and sat down at his and Red's table. His friend knew something was wrong with him the moment he heard that devilish "e . . . f . . . g" come from the boy.

"Suffering from some drama there, huh, Lucas?"

A nod.

Red sat back in his chair and slide over half a sandwich, which Lucas took gratefully. Sandwiches were the key to maintaining a happy and healthy life - well, at least they were to Lucas.

"Wanna tell me what's wrong?" No.

"Sure." Lucas shoved the rest of the sandwich into his mouth before going into detail, "When me and Ness worked on the project together it was all fun and rainbows but then yesterday happened and lightning struck me in the unhappy place and then Ness became an asshole and I wanted to jump into an ocean full of sharks." Red deciphered all of this pretty well.

"I told you Ness wasn't the best person to try and befriend. The chance that something like this was gonna happen was pretty high, and now look where you are: on the corner of screwed and scrapped." Red could have been more gentler, but he felt like that was unneeded.

Lucas whined loudly.

"You don't have to be so mean!"

Red glared. "And you don't have to be so childish."

Touché.

Lucas ignored Red for the remainder of the period. He wasn't mad at him or anything, but talking just seemed so exhausting right now. He kinda wanted to sleep. If he hadn't of eaten that sandwich then maybe he could have used it as a pillow . . .

The bell rang and Lucas headed out of the room, dreading history. But who cared, right? Right?! Right?! It's not like Ness mattered. Not anymore. Lucas was his own being and Ness was like a speak of dirt on a new shoe. Very . . . irritating and . . . unable to ignore.

Aw, Jesus.

Lucas tried to read a book that period. And he did accomplish that task. Kinda of. He kept glancing over at Ness, who sat in the front of the classroom. Just like yesterday, Ness had his head down.

Headache? Nausea? Brain tumor? What is it?!

There had to be some reason as to why Ness was acting so weird, right? Maybe . . . maybe that's what made him so bitter towards Lucas yesterday! What if he was sick? Then wouldn't that mean the sickness just made him have a rough day? Maybe if Lucas tried talking to him again he would be in a better mood. Or not, considering he might still not be feeling well since he did have his head on the desk. But maybe he wasn't sick at all and Lucas was theorizing stuff that had no relevance towards Ness whatsoever. In which case, Lucas was an idiot and really needed to go see a therapist. Psshh, as if. Lucas was completely sane, thank you very much. He even tested himself on his insanity levels once, and everything turned out a-ok.

Lucas doodled a picture of the mystery bunny from art class for the last few minutes of the period. He came to the conclusion that avoiding Ness was probably his best bet if he wanted to avoid a painful death.

The bell went off for that class just as it did for the remaining classes of the day. Lucas was happy that he could finally go home. He needed to make that bunny picture more detailed. And then he could make his mom hang it up on the fridge, where it belonged. It belonged on everybody's fridges.

All of them.

Every fridge in existence.

Since Lucas was so distracted by his own thoughts he didn't even realize another person was next to him until they pulled him aside and into an empty hallway.

He tried to scream, but a tan hand quickly covered his mouth.

"Calm down Lucas, it's only me."

Lucas immediately recognized the voice as Ness's and, when he looked up, saw those unmistakable violet staring back down at him. His insides turned to mush.

Ness removed his hand and Lucas coughed out of reflex, for some odd reason. "Hey, why'd you do that?"

Ness gave him a dumb look. "You were about to scream. What else should I have done? Geesh, you acted like someone was gonna attack you."

That he did.

"Sorry," he wasn't really. Anger settled in a small pit in his stomach. "Actually, I shouldn't be the one apologizing. You were super rude to me yesterday in history for no reason! It's mean to treat your friends that way, which I thought I was! If you don't want to be friends then all you have to do is say something! Don't be such an asshole!"

Lucas slapped a hand over his mouth. What did he just say.

Ness looked equally startled.

He was gonna die now, wasn't he?

"Sor-" Lucas never got the apology out of his mouth.

"No, I'm sorry, Lucas. I shouldn't have acted like that," Ness confessed, eyes cast slightly downwards. His face looked sad. "Sometimes I get kind of rude around people I consider friends for no reason, which isn't very cool of me, huh?" He laughed airily. "Anyway, I really am sorry about that. I'll try to be nicer around you."

If Lucas really tried, he might have been able to float.

Ness wasn't mad at him!

He could squeal.

"O-Oh, well, um, I m-mean, if you're sorry then I, uh . . ." Lucas tried to signal with his hands that everything was fine, but he was pretty sure that all it looked like was that his hands were having a spasm. Ness laughed, brighter this time.

"Glad to know you're not mad or anything."

Was Lucas mad? No, he didn't he was.

"Anyway," Ness cleared his throat, obviously moving on from that topic. "I pulled you aside so I could ask you something important."

Lucas calmed down enough to put his arms at rest by his sides. "And, uh, what would that be?" Wow, he still sounded extremely hoarse.

Ness seemed to stall for a moment, purple eyes surveying the surroundings. Lucas found no interest in the walls, though.

The brief hesitation ended after a few seconds.

"Do you wanna go on a date?"

. . .

Lucas died.

No joke.

He could feel his heart stop and his blood suddenly freeze.

In another minute he would be falling onto the floor.

Ness waved a hand in front of his face.

"You listening? I asked you if you wanted to go on a date?"

Lucas was half certain he was going deaf.

"Hmmmuhhh?"

Ness gave him a puzzled look.

"Is that a yes or a no?"

Lucas tried to find a hold on reality. "Yeeehhh?"

Ness seemed pleased with that answer. "Good. Will tomorrow be ok? Because it's Saturday tomorrow and we can do more stuff then."

Lucas nodded in agreement.

"Great!" Smiling, Ness pulled Lucas into a tight hug. "My mom has your address, so I'll just be over around noon tomorrow. We can go out and do whatever." Ness let go of him and Lucas wanted to pull him right back into the hug. "Well, guess I'll see you later then!" Ness left Lucas alone in a hallway, heart fluttering in his chest.

What just happened.
