Hello my lovelies. Bet you weren't expecting to hear from me ever again! Well Ha! Yeah you were probably right. I had no intention what so ever of continuing this. AT ALL! I was done. I wanted to end it a while ago but the outcry I received in the reviews and in personal messages made me continue. I still sort of regret that. Anyway, here I am, in college, writing my first novel, and I just found this unfinished chapter! And after numerous reviews and another inbox of private messages… HERE YOU ARE! Another chapter, you little vultures ;)
Fionna wasn't exactly known for being careless. Sure, she did things that would cause her to question her own intelligence but overall she prided herself in being thoughtful and careful. So when Apollo confessed to having feelings she thought she would be able to handle it well and act appropriately. However, little did she know, she had only begun to make things worse.
She was an adventurer. She knew how to sneak through a cave without being seen, how to slay a beast, how to rescue a distressed villager. What she didn't know how to do was deal with other people's feelings. Despite their relationship she still found herself unsure of how to act around Marshall Lee. She didn't know how she was supposed to react. Marshall constantly reassured her that she was perfect and that she needn't worry about acting too weirdly. Apollo, though, was not Marshall. He would say nothing about the fact she stood too close and touched him too often. Even the brush of an arm was enough to make him blush. In her mind she was simply being friendly.
The two ended up on the couch together, acting as though the previous conversation had never happened. Fionna offered to play video games but he politely declined and simply stuck to small talk.
"So you've never been outside of Aaa?" He asked with bewilderment.
"No," she shrugged, "I've always been needed here," She didn't feel like adding that, honestly, she hadn't known there were other places. That's not to say she thought that Aaa was the only piece of land on the Earth but she never considered the possibility of other societies, of other lands.
"Oh you must travel! There are places where it never stops snowing, more so than the Ice Kingdom. There are places where it never rains and places where the forests are covered by clouds and are filled with exotic creatures," he rambled wistfully.
"Maybe someday,"
"Alright, so you stay in Aaa… What has been your most dangerous mission? Aside from Ashley of course,"
Fionna sifted through her memories, trying to decide what would technically be the most dangerous. She'd fought dragons, demons, and mystical creatures that had not even been named yet. However, her mind kept returning to one situation in particular.
"Well, I was in this cave," she began. He smiled with a hint of excitement. "Cake and I had gotten into a fight and in order to prove that I could survive without her I decided to go alone. It was hard, but I managed up until I met this… dog. I know that sounds pathetic but this dog had, what he called 'an approximate knowledge of everything'. He wasn't entirely intelligent but he was able to guess enough to find me finding behind a rock. When he smelled Cake on me, he tried to kill me immediately. Luckily Cake wasn't far behind and saved me but… If she hadn't been, I'd be dead. This thing was… Jeez, he was crazy. He almost knew so my name, my skills, my fears…." She trailed off with a shudder.
She hadn't thought of that stupid dog in a while.
She also didn't think much of the way Apollo was staring at her.
"Few would admit to weaknesses," he said admirably. She blushed not at the compliment, but at the mention of weakness. She was embarrassed at that.
"Yeah, well, don't get used to it. I don't have many," she chuckled awkwardly.
"Most weaknesses are people," he added. "You are surrounded by your weaknesses, not that they make you less than you are, but they can be hindrances in the right situation,"
"What do you mean?"
"For instance, when you adventured alone without Cake, you realized that you could not do everything without her. She is a weakness to you, you need her. Marshall is a weakness because you love him. If he were in serious danger your judgment could be clouded."
"That's not true," her brow furrowed. "Both of us got hurt while fighting Ashley and neither of us screwed up because of the other,"
"So you've never done something stupid in order to save him?"
Fionna couldn't help but think back to the night in the Candy Dungeons. Marshall had warned her to stay away; he had pleaded for her to leave. Because she cared, she had gotten herself nearly killed. It was because of that that she was a vampire anyway. She had been angry at Marshall but now? Now she could only be angry at herself.
She didn't want to admit he was right.
"What about you then?"
"Hmm?"
"Well, what are your weaknesses?"
"Oh," he smiled. "Well, I have many. My cousin, of course, as I love her dearly. My kingdom. My friends which now include Marshall, Cake, and yourself… Really the list goes on,"
She felt oddly flattered that she had become a weakness to him. Flattered and guilty, that is. She knew that she was more of a weakness than he would care to admit. Despite the fact that both were fervidly trying to pretend like nothing was weird between them, she could feel the tension emitting from him. Apollo was rigid, every move he made seemed calculated and thought over. Even his words were somewhat strained as if they were going through a filter. The poor guy was trying so hard!
Realizing that she had fallen into silence she opened her mouth to say something when her eyes met Apollo's. He was looking at her with an all too familiar expression and again she felt that pang of guilt. Maybe she should have let him go, though it would have been difficult to explain to Marshall and FP.
"I should leave tomorrow," he finally sighed. She made no inquiry as to why, as she knew, and instead gave a tight-lipped smile. "If…" he began, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. He choked out a few unintelligible syllables before taking a deep breath. "Alright… If something were to happen, though I hold little hope it will, but if something were to happen between you and Marshall, would you consider coming to the Fire Kingdom? Would you consider coming to see me?" He asked.
Fionna dropped her gaze, wanting more than anything to sink back into the couch and disappear. She knew he didn't mean to make her uncomfortable, yet there she was, feeling as though there was a clamp on her throat.
He deserved an honest answer, though, and honest consideration. At the moment she couldn't imagine ever wanting someone else as she did Marshall. However, she had once felt something similar for Gumball and that had ended quite abruptly. Things could happen, the universe was cruel at times, and should something happen to Marshall she suspected another romance could flare up. After all, she would live forever, she would never expect to stay single for an eternity.
"Yes, I think… I could at least come visit," she admitted finally. She wasn't sure if it was smart to say so, but it was the truth. If, and she cursed every thought, Marshall should fall before her, Apollo would be someone she would be interested in.
He smiled softly, just the smallest movement of the lips, but she saw the happiness there all the same. She felt somewhat guilty, like she had just given him false hope. It was too late to take it back now, though.
"Well, let's hope nothing happens to me," a very unhappy voice sounded from the front door. Fionna flinched as her eyes met those same grey eyes that she had looked into since the day she held him captive.
"Marshall," she breathed. Why hadn't he said anything sooner? And how could she have not noticed him entering the room? FP stood in his shadow with the shyest of expressions.
"I'm sorry," Apollo blurted out. "I stepped out of line,"
Fionna expected some sort of anger, even if it was a slight simmering behind the eyes that only she could see, but all she saw was sadness and that was worse.
"No, it's alright. I'm, uh, I'm tired. I think I'm going to take a nap," he rubbed the back of his neck, a habit he only had when he was stressed.
"I'll come with you," she offered, guilt rising like bile in her throat.
"No," he gave an emotionless smile, "that's alright. You two look like you are having fun," he shrugged.
Without another word he went up the stairs to her bedroom and FP, Apollo, and Fionna were all left in a silence that seemed deafening.
"Shit," she cursed under her breath. FP had a look of guilt that nearly mirrored the one that was undoubtedly covering Fionna's face. Apollo's gaze was fixed on his hands with an unreadable expression. "I'm going to go talk to him," she sighed.
FP gave a short nod of agreement before she slowly climbed the stairs, reluctance slowing her every step.
She wasn't sure what to expect when she entered the room, but what she found was her boyfriend, clothed in nothing but his boxers, climbing under the covers of their bed. She hadn't expected him to be serious of the subject of a nap.
"Marshall…" she began in a sheepish voice.
"You don't look tired," he noted nonchalantly, though she saw through his ruse.
"Look," she sighed, "we need to talk."
"Why"?"
"Because you walked in at a bad moment and you are upset," she stated bluntly.
"What are you talking about?"
"Cut the crap Marshall, I know you heard Apollo and me," she crossed the room and sat beside him on the bed. She placed a hand on his knee and half expected him to push it away, but instead he seemed to visibly relax at her touch.
It took over a minute of silence for him to finally speak. "Do you like him?" His voice was almost too quiet for her to hear. She couldn't decide whether she was going to laugh or cry at his ridiculous question. Of course, he had every reason to ask, she shouldn't have said anything to begin with. She felt guilty and sympathetic all simultaneously.
"Marshall, he's a friend. He and the princess saved us. Of course I like him… As a person. I didn't mean to make it sound like I loved you any less than I do," she explained softly. "You can't jump to wild conclusions based on hypothetical situations,"
"I know," he sighed, resting his head on the wall behind him. "It wasn't even that, not really. I know that if something happened you would move on… Anyway, not the point. It's the fact that there is a chance I will die, I'm still wanted and probably always will be. Princess Bubblegum may be willing to listen but there is always going to be someone else. Someone might hunt me. I'm reckless and stupid, I'm surprised I've survived this long. I changed you, I made you immortal, and I know that if I die, you'll be alone. I did that to you, why would I do that?"
Ah, so that's what it was about.
"You did that because I was going to die,"
"Which was also my fault,"
"Marshall, what do you want me to say? I hate you for turning me? Or that I'm happy you did? It happened, and yeah, there's a chance that at some point in my existence, I will be without you, but I made the choice to stick around and I want to be with you." She climbed onto the bed and sat on his lap, looking intently into his grey eyes which had darkened significantly. "Marry me." She whispered.
Those eyes, full of thirst and sadness widened with surprise, a flash of silver consuming their colour. His mouth opened a few times like a fish out of water, gasping for breath. She felt her own lips curl into a smirk. She loved catching him off guard. Truthfully, she was just as surprised as he was. Fionna never had believed in marriage and certainly never thought of doing it herself. It was stupid for an adventurer to tie herself down. Marriage meant family, children, a vanilla life that she was in no way interested in. Well, not until now.
"Fionna I… But…"
"It's a yes or no question Marshall,"
He grabbed the sides of her face and crashed his lips into hers. Moments later she found her face wet. Confused she pulled away and found tears in his eyes. At first this frightened her until she realized he was smiling.
"Is that a yes?"
"Yes," he chuckled, "but I was supposed to ask." He pouted pathetically.
"It's not like we've had the most normal of relationships anyway," she pointed out, smiling and leaning forward to kiss him again.
He pulled her on top of him. "My queen," he murmured.
