Epilogue
Two weeks later…
Obi-Wan stood just outside the Council Chamber gazing at the door a flutter of nervousness going through him. At his side stood his beautiful wife Siri, in her arms she carried his beautiful twin children Kira and Jinn. Just behind him stood Obi-Wan's beloved brother, Anakin, with Luke cradled in his arms and Padmé standing at his side with Leia in her arms. Standing on Padmé's other side was Ahsoka, the young Togruta Padawan of Anakin who had come to show her support. They stood gazing at Obi-Wan, waiting not for the Council to summon them but for Obi-Wan to answer the summons that came minutes earlier.
"Are you ready to do this?" Siri asked.
Obi-Wan took a deep breath, released it then said, "I am."
"You can do this," Ahsoka said with a smile. "If anyone can convince the Council of the rightness of this then it's you."
"I agree," Anakin said with a smile. "Now let's get to it, old man, before Luke and Leia get hungry again."
"I'm not old," Obi-Wan retorted before he walked forward. The Council Chamber doors slide open and Obi-Wan made his way into the circular chamber. All Jedi Masters who had survived the war were there; some were in person while others were holograms projected from the holoprojectors implanted in their seats.
Obi-Wan gazed at each of them in turn before fixing his gaze on the oldest and wisest member of the Order. "Master Yoda," he said with an incline of his head. "Masters."
"Master Kenobi, wished to speak to us you did," said Yoda.
"Yes Masters," Obi-Wan said calmly. "Masters, I haven't exactly been truthful toward you. I have told you about where I came from and what the future I lived in was like but I have not told you about what occurred in this timeline. I am tired of keeping this a secret from you and it's time that I came clean about it. Siri?"
Siri walked into the Council Chamber carrying Jinn and Kira in her arms. She smiled proudly as she handed Jinn to Obi-Wan and he took the one-year old baby into his arms smiling. He turned his gaze to the stunned Council. "I would like to introduce you to Kira Nikana Kenobi and Jinn Revan Kenobi. Mine and Siri's children."
"Children?" Mace echoed.
"Yes," Obi-Wan said. "Siri is my wife. We got married after the incident on Mortis. We have been in love for years but we decided to make it official." He stretched out with the Force touching Siri's mind through their mind and she responded in kind causing their bond to flare with power and the Council to jolt as if shocked by electricity.
"You're married and the father of twin children?" Mace said dumbfounded.
"You broke the Jedi Code," Shaak Ti said quietly.
"I know that I did," Obi-Wan said, "and I do not regret it. I love my wife and I love my children. I am not ashamed to admit that."
"And he isn't the only one," Anakin said striding into the Council Chamber with Luke in his arms and Padmé with Leia followed him. "I am also married, Masters, and these are my children; Luke Obi-Wan Skywalker and Leia Shmi Skywalker. Just like Obi-Wan, I'm tired of keeping secrets."
"Both of you?" Adi echoed sounded surprised.
"Expect this I did not," Yoda said. "Consider this we must. Leave you will. Call you back when make our decision about your future we do."
Obi-Wan remained where he stood. It is now or never, he thought.
"More to say have you?" Yoda asked.
"Yes Masters," Obi-Wan said calmly. "I would like a few minutes of your time. Before you make your decision about whether I and Anakin and Siri can stay within the Order even though we are married and are parents, I would like to speak to you."
"Plead your case you wish to?" Yoda was perceptive.
"Yes. Not my case of my marriage to Siri or Anakin's marriage to Padmé. I am here to plead the case of love in general. You see, I have learned many things since I was sent to the back; I have learned that it is love that was the reason why the galaxy is safe now. It was my love for Anakin that allowed me to make the decision to come to the past to save the future, to save Anakin. Love is not a bad thing and it is not attachment as many would believe."
"Qui-Gon said these words to me just before I was sent back. He told me: The dark is generous, it is patient and it always wins. But in its strength lies weakness. One lone candle is enough to hold it back. Love is more than a candle. Love can ignite the stars. How can love lead to the dark side when it can ignite the stars and keep the darkness at bay? Love is not attachment."
"The line between love and attachment is a thin one, one that is not easily recognized but there is a line, there is a boundary that defines what love is and what attachment is. Attachment is when you desire to possess someone and will do anything and everything to not let them go even to death even though death is a natural component of life. However, love is when you care for someone unconditionally like compassion, it is when you will protect someone with your life if necessary but at the same time be willing to let them go to death should it be their time."
"The Code states that there is no passion there is serenity. However, passion is a mixture of many different emotions from rage to sadness, from fear to joy, from hatred to love. To get rid of such emotions that are as powerfully light and pure as love and joy and compassion is to get rid of what really makes us Jedi. We fight to protect and defend those who cannot defend themselves; our selflessness is fueled by our compassion, by the unconditional love we all feel. It is that unconditional love that drives us to be protectors, to be peacekeepers, to be defenders."
"I am not saying that the Code is wrong, I am saying that it is misinterpreted. My love for Siri has not hindered my ability to do my duties to the Jedi, has not driven me closer to the dark side." Obi-Wan paused to let what he had said sink in before looking over at Anakin and going on.
"Over two weeks ago in Palpatine's office during that final duel, whether the Sith would regain control of the galaxy or not lay in Anakin's hands. Palpatine had just injured me, fatally, and told Anakin that he, alone, would be able to save me. What did Anakin do? If he had been attached to me then I have no doubt he would have given in to Palpatine's offer. However, his love for me allowed him to take what I told him to heart, it helped him to understand that I would not have wanted to watch him fall to the dark side again if it meant saving my life. His choice was between my life and the dark future I was trying to prevent and he chose to prevent the future I lived in."
"Love is not a bad thing, Masters. I feel many members of the Jedi believe it to be bad only because of how it is always associated with attachment, because many Jedi believe love and attachment to be the same thing. But it is not. It is unconditional, it is pure and it is light."
"All I ask you to do now is take my words into consideration when you make your decision regarding my future with the Order but I will tell you this one last thing. I love the Jedi Order. They have been my family for years ever since I was an infant but I love Siri, Kira and Jinn just as much if not more. If you force me to choose between the Jedi and my wife and children, I will choose my wife and children."
"Between the Jedi and my children, I will also choose my children," Siri said stepping forward.
"So will I," Anakin said. "If I have to leave the Jedi Order to be the father my children deserve then that is what I will do. Nothing means more to me now than my family."
The Jedi Council were silent gazing at the three Jedi who stood before them fully aware of what they did, of the code that they broke but not ashamed of what they had done. They remained silent for several long moments, Obi-Wan's words sinking into them.
Yoda was the first to break the silence. "Consider your words we shall, Master Kenobi. Some time we need to think about this. Dismissed you are."
Obi-Wan inclined his head before turning around and leaving the Council Chamber.
Mace Windu sat watching Obi-Wan, Siri and Anakin along with Senator Amidala leave the Council Chamber before he turned his gaze to Yoda. Obi-Wan's words echoed in his mind and Mace was stunned by how passionately Obi-Wan spoke, how thorough he had been in his plea, how it seemed he had been planning it for years, how much sense Obi-Wan had made.
"He made sense," Adi said softly. "He's right. We always thought attachment and love were the same thing but he's proven to us that our assumption was wrong."
"Could we have been wrong this entire time?" Shaak Ti asked. "Could we really have misinterpreted the Jedi Code?"
Mace looked over at Yoda who was silent listening to the two female Jedi talk before he said, "Made sense, Master Kenobi did, made a lot of sense he did. Believe I do that had this planned for a long time he has. True what he said is however. Been married to Siri Tachi for a few years he has and yet hindered his ability to do his duties to the Jedi, and to the war, it did not. The same said it can be for young Skywalker."
"Recently, Anakin's fear was out of control for a while though," Mace pointed out remembering how it had rolled off Anakin in thick waves just before the confrontation in Palpatine's office. "But then it was gone during the duel in Palpatine's office until Obi-Wan was injured. But Obi-Wan had managed to pull him back from losing control just by his words. Anakin's control over his emotions is unlike it had been before Obi-Wan came back to the past."
"Agree I do. Now then, a bigger question answered it must be. Do with them what are we?"
"Can we really expel them from the Order? After what they've done, after Obi-Wan's speech and how much sense it made?" Shaak Ti asked.
"You heard what they said," Plo Koon's hologram said. "They said that they would leave the Order if we made them choose between the Order and their family."
"And I have no doubt in my mind that they were serious," said Adi. "We aren't going to ask them to choose are we?"
"I don't think that's the right way to approach this," said Stass Allie. "They love their families, I could sense that much and Obi-Wan made that clear in his speech. And, as Master Yoda said, Obi-Wan's love for Siri and his children has not hindered his abilities as a Jedi."
"They broke the Code though," Ki-Adi-Mundi's hologram said softly. "We need to take that into consideration."
"But, just as Obi-Wan said, we need to take what he said into consideration as well," Mace said. "I, for one, saw what occurred in Palpatine's office and I think that we should let them stay within the Order."
"I agree with Master Windu," Adi said softly.
"We're talking about changing the way the Order operates," said Ki-Adi quietly.
"Perhaps that would be a good thing," Stass said.
"Maybe it is time for the Order to change," Mace said quietly. "But I don't think we should go about this too rashly but I do think we should allow Master Kenobi, Siri and Anakin to stay within the Order."
"And their children?" asked Shaak Ti. "They are the first to be born to Jedi in millennia."
"What can we do with them?" Stass asked. "No matter how powerful the children may be, we do not take children from their parents unless their parents approve it."
"And I doubt Obi-Wan, Siri and Anakin will let their children become members of the Order unless they remain as well. They did say they would choose their children over the Order any day."
"Believe I do," Yoda said, "that decide the future of their children, Obi-Wan, Siri and Anakin should be allowed to do."
"I agree," Adi said. "So what do we do? Do we let Obi-Wan, Siri and Anakin remain part of the Order or not?"
Yoda closed his eyes, reached out with the Force, then said, "Already know the answer to that question we do."
Shmi Skywalker eyed the towering skyscrapers warily as the speeder glided through the air lanes of the capital of the Republic. She was intimidated by the cityscape that stretched out before her but how could she not be? She hailed from the desert planet of Tatooine. She never expected to leave the planet until she met a dark-haired former Jedi who told her that she had come on behalf of another Jedi.
Said former Jedi sat at the control yoke of the speeder occasionally glancing at Shmi who sat in the passenger seat. Shmi's husband Cliegg sat in the back of the speeder with his son Owen and his daughter in law Beru at his side. All three of them were just as intimidated by Coruscant's abundance of skyscrapers as she was.
"It takes some getting used to," the former Jedi, Jenica Narak, said gently. "But we're almost there."
"Where are we going exactly?" asked Shmi.
"My former Master suggested we go to 500 Republica. But he wants to get you there before everyone else arrives."
"Everyone? Everyone who?" Cliegg asked warily as Jenica guided the speeder around another speeder. "And are you even old enough to fly?"
Jenica smiled a little. "No one's ever asked that before. We're here." She guided the speeder to a halt on the landing bay outside the top floor apartment of Senator Padmé Amidala. She shut down the main engines before climbing out of the speeder. She then walked over to help Shmi out as Cliegg, Beru and Owen got out of the speeder as well.
"I'm looking forward to seeing Ani again," Shmi admitted, "even if it means coming to this strange new place." She had been hesitant when Jenica offered to take her and her family to Coruscant to visit her son but, eventually, her desire to see her son won out. Though she was a little hesitant about being in a strange new place, she felt that she had made the right choice and she was excited at seeing her son again.
Jenica led the way into the apartment and the familiar golden protocol droid, See Threepio, made his way into the living room. "Mistress Shmi, oh it is so good to see you again," Threepio said.
Shmi smiled. "It's good to see you again, Threepio."
"I should inform Master Ani…" Threepio began.
"No, don't," Jenica said using the Force to take Threepio's comlink from him. "I promised Mas…Obi-Wan that Mrs. Skywalker's arrival would be kept a secret. We want to surprise Anakin, Threepio."
"Oh I do believe this will surprise Master Ani," Threepio said. "Master Ani and Mistress Padmé aren't back yet though."
"Padmé?" Shmi echoed.
"Oh, you didn't know? Oh yes, I do remember that Master Ani did not tell you when he last saw you."
"And I think Anakin should be the one to tell Mrs. Skywalker himself, Threepio," Jenica said before she glanced at Shmi. "Go ahead and sit down. I'll contact Ma…Obi-Wan and let him know that we're here."
Shmi walked over to the couch and sat down amazed by how comfortable the couch was. Her husband sat down beside her and Owen and Beru took a seat on the other couch in the living room while Jenica walked away pulling her comlink out as she did so.
"All right, good. Thanks Jeni," Ahsoka said.
"Why didn't Obi-Wan pick up?" Jenica's voice asked over the comlink.
"He was about to when the Council summoned him so he asked me to answer. How are you, Jeni?"
"I'm fine, Ahsoka, and, before you ask, I don't regret my decision. I really feel I made the right decision. I'm still shocked that Anakin's married though," Jenica admitted.
Ahsoka chuckled. "So was I when I first found out. How's Shmi taking in everything?"
"She's adjusting. She told me that she was hesitant but made her decision because she wants to see Anakin again."
"I think she's going to be surprised to learn about Padmé and Luke and Leia," Ahsoka admitted.
"To be honest, I'm still attempting to wrap my mind around that fact and around the fact that Obi-Wan is married and a father too," Jenica admitted.
Ahsoka smiled a little. "Well, thank you for the help, Jeni," she said.
She, Obi-Wan and Padmé had been the ones to come up with the plan to get Shmi to Coruscant five days after the duel in Chancellor Palpatine's office. They did it because Padmé had said that Anakin wanted his mother to know about Luke and Leia and yet didn't think it would ever be possible. But, because they couldn't exactly leave Coruscant without someone noticing, Ahsoka suggested they enlist Jenica who had arrived on Bellassa the day before the duel. Obi-Wan had agreed and Ahsoka had contacted her old friend before asking her for the favor.
Ahsoka couldn't wait to see the look on her Master's face when he saw his mother.
"You're welcome, 'Soka," Jenica replied before she disconnected the transmission. Ahsoka put Obi-Wan's comlink away before turning her gaze to the doors to the Council Chamber.
Anakin had to marvel at how calm Obi-Wan was facing the Council as the three Jedi, and their children, waited for the Council's verdict. He was nervous and even Padmé's presence at his side was doing little to quench the nervousness. Rocking Luke helped soothe the nervousness though and that was what he was doing as he waited for the Council to speak.
"Considered what you told us we did," Yoda began after several long minutes of silence. "Agreed we have." He fell silent and Anakin felt a jolt of impatience go through him.
Luke whimpered and Anakin released his impatience into the Force before gently rocking his baby boy again. Luke's whimpering died away as he fell back asleep.
"We have decided," Mace said, "that we are going to let the three of you remain within the Jedi Order."
Anakin and Siri exchanged shocked glances but Obi-Wan, like always, didn't so much as bat an eyelash. He simply inclined his head in response.
"And we have decided that your children's future is yours to decide," said Adi. "If you want them to be Jedi then we will welcome them. But if you don't want them to be Jedi then we understand."
"And you will remain a member of the Jedi Council, Obi-Wan," Mace said. "You have more than earned that position. Anakin, you may also remain on the Council."
Anakin simply shook his head. "I am not ready to be a Council member, Masters. I already said that before. I was only a Council member because it was what Palpatine wanted. Now that Palpatine is dead, I would like to respectfully resign from the Council."
The Jedi Council blinked before Mace said, "Are you sure, Anakin? You earned the position after what you did in Chancellor Palpatine's office."
"I'm sure. To be honest, I feel like I will never be ready to be on the Council and I am okay with that."
"A very mature and responsible response that was, Anakin," Yoda said. "Very well, accept your resignation I do."
"Thank you, Master Yoda." Anakin smiled a little when he felt the pride drift off his brother through their bond and saw Padmé look at him with a small smile of pride on her face.
Luke began crying at that moment and Anakin looked at the baby with a frown. "What's the matter, little angel?" he murmured rocking the baby but his son continued to cry.
"I think he might be hungry," Padmé said.
"Dismissed you are," Yoda said seeming to decide that when Luke started crying was the best way to end the meeting.
"May the Force be with you," Mace added.
Obi-Wan was also looking forward to seeing the look on Anakin's face when they returned to Padmé's apartment. Ahsoka had dropped back to join him almost as soon as they left the Council Chamber and informed him that Shmi had arrived and was waiting in Padmé's apartment. He then moved to Padmé's side while Ahsoka distracted Anakin by asking to hold Luke and Anakin instructed her on how to hold the baby without hurting him.
"Shmi's here," Obi-Wan whispered.
Padmé smiled. "I think Anakin's going to love our surprise," she said quietly.
"As do I," Obi-Wan said shifting his grip on Jinn who was quiet and gazing around with big sharp blue eyes that, again, reminded Obi-Wan of his former master.
The party left the Jedi Temple and Ahsoka took over as driver of the speeder before guiding the speeder toward the apartment. It didn't take them long to reach 500 Republica, Obi-Wan was convinced that Ahsoka had taken after Anakin in terms of being speed demons even though she wasn't as fast as Anakin probably because they had babies with them. Once they reached the apartment building, Ahsoka landed the speeder before leaping out of it.
"You seem excited," Anakin said amused.
Ahsoka chuckled. "I'm just looking forward to seeing the look on your face," she said.
"What do you mean?"
"You'll see."
"Ahsoka…" Anakin began but Ahsoka just laughed and dashed off to the nearest turbolift. Looking puzzled, Anakin looked toward Obi-Wan who remained expressionless. "Do you know what that was about?"
"No idea," Obi-Wan said before he gestured. "Shall we get going?"
Anakin narrowed his eyes but nodded and led the way to the turbolift. Obi-Wan followed with Padmé and Siri bringing up the rear of the group. A few of Padmé's personal guard who guarded the lobby of the apartment building glanced up but said nothing as they passed by.
Anakin didn't know what Ahsoka was keeping from him and no matter how many times he tried to ask her to tell him, she kept insisting that he would see and then went quiet. To make matters worse, Anakin was sure his former master knew about whatever Ahsoka was keeping from him but he, too, remained silent.
It was frustrating.
The turbolift continued its silent journey upward. Thankfully, Luke's cries had died down but Anakin knew the baby was still hungry. He resolved to solve that problem the instant he got to Padmé's apartment; he had learned, in the last two weeks, how to do the basic things when taking care of babies. Padmé and Dormé had taught him how to feed the babies and change their diapers. Thankfully, he didn't have to do the latter.
Finally, the turbolift came to a halt and the doors opened. To Anakin's surprise, the first person he saw within the apartment was Jenica, Obi-Wan's former apprentice who left the Order a few weeks before the duel in Palpatine's office. The fifteen year old former Jedi stood just inside the apartment and smiled in greeting to Anakin as he stepped out of the lift.
"Hello Master Skywalker, it's good to see you," she said.
"You too, Jenica," Anakin said. "But you can call me Anakin."
Jenica smiled a little. "All right, Anakin. Hello Obi-Wan, 'Soka," she said to Obi-Wan and Ahsoka who stepped out of the lift behind Anakin. Siri and Padmé followed them.
"Hi Jeni, is the surprise ready?" Ahsoka asked with a grin.
"Yes it is."
"What surprise?" Anakin asked with a frown.
"Should we keep him in suspense for a bit longer, Jeni?" Ahsoka asked.
"Snips…" Anakin protested.
Ahsoka laughed.
Jenica smiled. "Someone here wants to say hello to you, Anakin," she said and led Anakin into the living area of the room. Anakin, confused, followed her only to stop dead when she saw who Jenica was referring to.
Sitting on the form couch in the middle of Padmé's living area was Shmi Skywalker-Lars, Anakin's mother.
"Mom?" Anakin said shocked and not daring to believe that what he was actually seeing was true.
Shmi stood up and walked around the couch before coming to a stop in front of Anakin. "Oh Ani, it's so good to see you," she said hugging Anakin who would have hugged her back if he hadn't been holding Luke. "I've missed you."
"I've missed you too, Mom, but what are you doing here?" Anakin asked.
Shmi smiled and stepped back. "Jenica here offered me a chance to come and visit you so I took her up on her offer."
"It was all Obi-Wan, Ahsoka and Padmé's plan," Jenica put in.
"You three knew?" Anakin echoed looking at his former master, his Padawan and his wife.
"We wanted to surprise you, Ani," Padmé said with a smile.
"And we definitely succeeded in that," Ahsoka said with a grin.
"Besides, I do believe your mother deserves to know about her daughter in law and her grandchildren, don't you agree?" Obi-Wan said casually.
"Daughter in law? Children?" Shmi echoed.
Anakin turned his gaze back to his mother as Padmé moved to his side. "This is my wife, Mom, Senator Padmé Amidala Skywalker."
"It is very nice to finally meet you, Mrs. Skywalker," Padmé said.
Shmi smiled. "Hello, it's nice to meet you to but please, call me Shmi." She looked between Anakin and Padmé before adding, "And I have grandchildren?"
Anakin nodded. "This is my son, Luke Obi-Wan Skywalker," he said holding the baby and Shmi gently took the baby in her arms smiling a little.
"He looks so much like you did when you were that young. He is definitely just as adorable as you were," she said softly.
Anakin's cheeks reddened and went redder when he heard Ahsoka snicker behind him.
Padmé chuckled. "And this is Leia Shmi Skywalker," she said as Shmi handed Luke back to his father before taking Leia into her arms.
"Twins?" she asked.
Padmé nodded. "Come, why don't we sit? Luke and Leia are hungry and I need to prepare their bottles."
"Yes, I think that would be a good idea," Shmi said softly before leading the way to the living area.
Anakin looked toward Obi-Wan before he followed her and said, "Thank you."
"You're welcome, Anakin," Obi-Wan said with a smile.
Obi-Wan sat on the balcony of Padmé's apartment gazing at the cityscape and holding Jinn in his arms. Everything looked so peaceful even if a few of the buildings that had been destroyed during the Battle of Coruscant were still under repair. The sky was clear and stars blinked against the black backdrop. It was a cool night and yet the cool air was refreshing as it gently caressed Obi-Wan's cheeks.
Obi-Wan hasn't felt at peace in such a long time that he found himself enjoying it. It was so different from the first time around when he was in his little home beyond the Jundland Wastes mourning over everything he had lost. No, this time around, he was seated on the balcony with his son in his arms enjoying the peace and tranquility and finally able to store what occurred in the future he came from away from the forefronts of his mind.
He felt his wife's presence and looked up as Siri sat down beside him holding Kira in her arms. "What are you doing out here?" Siri asked.
"Just thinking," Obi-Wan admitted gazing into Jinn's sleepy eyes.
"About what?"
"Everything, my task being finished, being here with you and Jinn and Kira." Obi-Wan closed his eyes as Siri rested her head on his shoulder. "It seems like so long ago that I was just waking up in the ship heading back from Ansion."
"Things have changed since then and I think it's changed for the better because of you, Obi-Wan," Siri said.
Obi-Wan opened his eyes before looking at his wife and gently kissing her. She kissed him back and only pulled apart when Anakin called, "Hey, you two, there are children present. Get a room."
"Shut up, Anakin," Obi-Wan called back.
Anakin laughed. "Mom said dinner's almost ready. Are you going to join us or not?" he asked.
"We're coming, Anakin," Obi-Wan said standing up and Siri stood up beside him.
"I'm going to put Kira to bed," she said. "She looks worn out and Jinn looks worn out too." She kissed Obi-Wan on the cheek before making her way back into the living area of the apartment.
Obi-Wan glanced back at the endless cityscape of Coruscant and the star-speckled sky above before he made his way back into the apartment to join his family and his friends who were already gathering in the kitchen in preparation for whatever dinner Shmi had finished cooking.
He no longer had to worry about the future he came from for he knew that it was null and void. His beloved brother was on the light side, was going to be the father he was meant to be to Luke and Leia and Obi-Wan, himself, was happy with his beloved wife and his beautiful children and the family that he never had in the future he came from.
Obi-Wan may not be able to see the future but he could feel that it was going to be much brighter than the one he left behind.
