He's seen a vast plethora of emotions cross her face. Happy, sad, angry, ecstatic, curious, murderous, and rarely this one. Peaceful. It was a nice change from the pure agony on her face from only a few moments earlier. Korra had been having nightmares since her encounter with Amon four years ago, even though she had found inner peace with herself after Harmonic Convergence. Mako knew her one of her greatest fears still was losing her bending, but didn't like to or wouldn't talk about it. So her fears manifested themselves as nightmares. Mako's room was right next to Korra's, so he would hear the heart-breaking wails and run to her room before anyone else ever heard her.
He didn't want anyone else to comfort her, because that was his job.
The moment his hand brushed the hair from her forehead, her whimpers died down. Then she looked peaceful. He loved it. He loved the fact that he could bring her peace, and relax her tortured subconscious. He just wishes he could erase them completely; after all she had done for him and even the world she didn't deserve to be plagued like this. But how could he help her if she wouldn't let him in? Sighing, we stood up and decided to go back to him room. One step and a hand was wrapped tightly around his wrist.
"Please stay." Korra's eyes were still heavy with sleepiness, but Mako could clearly see the fear and pain hidden behind her blue eyes. Without another word, he slipped under the covers, Korra automatically cuddling up to him. Her body fit perfectly with his, contributing to the stereotypicalness that couples meant to be fit together like puzzle pieces. She enjoyed that phrase a lot, although she would punch Mako in the shoulder everytime he mentioned it. Her hand on his chest gripped his shirt, wrinkling the fabric up. He looked down at her, shocked to see tears running down her face.
"Oh Korra..." Mako pulled Korra tight against him, trying to convey his love to her without speaking. Her head buried against him, she choked out a sob, effectively breaking his heart.
"I'm such a bad person Mako... I don't deserve you at all, but I need you so much! I'm so afraid of losing you." He barely caught her words, but when they registered I hugged her even closer to my body. Maybe her nightmares weren't about losing her bending anymore. Maybe she didn't want to tell him about her nightmares because they involved him.
"What makes you think you're a bad person? Or that you don't deserve me?" He murmered in her ear, gently running his fingers through her loose hair.
"I'm a bad person, because I'm selfish and I'm not good enough to protect everyone. So many people have died because I couldn't protect them. If I couldn't protect them how and I gonna keep from losing you. If I lose you, I just can't!" Her sobs caused chills to run up and down his arms. She thought she was going to lose him? From what?
"Korra, you're not going to lose me. What makes you think that?" After a minute her sobs subsided, leaving the room earily quiet.
"These dreams are always about losing you. I never can protect you, no matter how hard I try. Even with Raava's help I'm still too weak, and I have to watch the life fade from your eyes every single night. It's killing me Mako! I'd rather lose my bending again then watch you die!" Her bending? She was that scared?
"So you haven't been having nightmares about losing your bending anymore. When did they change?" Mako knew he had to ease into the subject, so she would finally talk about it. If she kept locking it up, the memories would drive her insane. Mako couldn't even imagine how she had been hiding her pain this well for so long.
"When I realized you were a million times more important to me than even my bending. I was lost without my bending, but I would be dead without you. I still think the time we split up to take time to grow was exactly what we needed at the time but now, now I need you and I can't lose you again." Oh Korra. He kissed her tears away, trying to erase the pain she was feeling. He knew he'd trade his bending in a heart beat to keep her safe as well.
"I need you too Korra. I love you so much, and I can't even imagine the pain your feeling. But you will not lose me, and you don't need to worry about it." Her redened eyes searched his, looking for something she desperately needed to know. Was he being honest or just trying to console her?
He was being honest. She saw this, and cuddled back against his side, letting out a relieved sigh.
"Better?" He ran his hand through her hair again, glad he could relieve his Love's worries.
"Better. I'd go insane without you, you know that?"
"What are you talking about? You're already crazy."
"How's that?" She lifted her head and gave me her famous 'idiot' look.
"You agreed to date me." She laughed and punched his arm before settling back down.
"I love you, you dork."
"I love you Korra."
He watched as she drifted back off, a peaceful look on her face once again. He liked seeing her happy- it meant he was doing his job right. She deserved to be happy.
Tenzin was just standing at Korra's door, mouth hanging open, when Pema walked by.
"There you are. You went to wake the kids up ten minutes ago." His head snapped around to meet Pema's wide eyes, his face growing increasingly red with anger. She peaked around the frame to see what Tenzin was about to blow up about. Aw, they're so cute together.
"They're in the same bed, Pema! I specifically told them that this was not appropriate and that if I caught them again-"
"Tenzin, leave them be. Did you notice we didn't hear Korra have any nightmares last night? And its been three years since you told them that. She's twenty and he's twenty-one now."
"I hate when your right."
"Then it's too bad I'm right all the time, right Tenzin?"
