She stroked his hair, gazed into his eyes, and realized what she'd almost lost. She'd almost gone back to the misery from which she'd nearly never pulled herself free. She'd almost lost her best friend, the man whose charm and determination to win the day with his own style so oft bested his annoyance that Emilia sometimes had trouble remembering the multitude of reasons why she mustn't allow him to bewitch her. The pain she felt now reminded her. She could not afford affection, and so she treated only Jack's outward wounds, never speaking a word of their inward ones.
