A/N: So, I was on the bus coming home from work and "Two Out Of Three (Ain't Bad)" by Meatloaf came on the radio. I was inspired, hopefully it a good direction. It didn't really come out as well as I was hoping, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Obviously the title and the lyrics come from the above mentioned song :P Hope you enjoy! :)

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Two Out Of Three

Baby we can talk all night
But that ain't getting us nowhere
I've told you everything I possibly can
There's nothing left inside of here

And maybe you can cry all night
But that'll never change the way that I feel
[...]

I want you
I need you
But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
Now don't be sad
Cause two out of three ain't bad
Now don't be sad
Cause two out of three ain't bad
...

He sat on the edge of the bed and ran a hand wearily across his face, trying to ignore the muffled sobs of the woman on the bed behind him.

He sighed and looked up at the ceiling, suppressing his own pain at hurting her, "I'm sorry," he murmured for what felt like the millionth time, "I can't give you anything else."

He turned to look at her, "You know that," he reminded her gently.

She nodded, but the look on her face told him that she still didn't understand; that he was hurting her.

Again.

"I care about you, you are mine-"

"But you don't love me," she whispered.

"No," he confirmed softly.

He was a consummate liar, but even he couldn't tell a lie as great as that. Not when it meant betraying someone who was infinitely dearer to him.

Besides he really did care for her and, if he couldn't love her, he could at least be honest with her.

"You are important to me, I need you," he murmured, reaching out to cup her chin in his hand.

"It's not enough," she told him, pulling her chin from his grasp. "I can't go on like this," she added.

He regarded her with sorrowful eyes: he would be sad to lose her but he would not deny her the freedom to make her choice.

"If you wish," he told her.

She nodded, "I still need your friendship, I don't want to lose that…" she took a steadying breath, "but I can't fool myself any longer. You're in love with her and there's nothing I can do to change that."

He nodded and kissed her hand, "I will always be here for you," he assured her as he prepared to leave.

"Thank you," she paused, "I hope you find her," she added.

He looked up at her looking a little self-conscious but unable to deny that the moment he left her he would be searching for Her: the woman he loved and had lost.

"Thank you," he said and was gone.

Sookie regarded the spot where Eric had been for a long time and found that she didn't regret her decision.

Being together had been slowly killing them both: her because she knew he didn't love her and him because he was hopelessly in love with someone else.

She loved him enough to want him to be happy, even if it wasn't with her. She only hoped that their relationship hadn't irreparably harmed his chances.

She sighed; she hoped that when he found her, Pam would realise just how lucky she was.

I can't lie
I can't tell you that I'm something I'm not
No matter how I try
I'll never be able to give you something
Something that I just haven't got

Well there's only one girl that I will ever love
And that was so many years ago
And though I know I'll never get her out of my heart
[...]
I remember how she left me on a stormy night

She kissed me and got out of our bed
And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door
She packed her bags and turned right away
