It's an AU, i feel like i can get away with that. As of this moment (5:50 the 24th of April) i have around 20% of the second chapter complete. i have no idea when i will be able to finish it (college life amiright?). Also this is completely un-beta'd so if there are any mistakes sorry not sorry. Also also if the formatting is all screwy i will change it i have never learned how up work this site being a publisher.
Summer was finally coming to an end. Most high school students would be anguished that their freedom filled, bikini wearing, no homework summer was over, but not Blaine. With summer came home. And Blaine was not a fan of home. He loved his mother and he loved seeing her every day. He loved his younger sister, he loved teasing and tormenting her. He loved sharing things with her and watching what others would deem 'girly shows' with her. He did not however, love his judgmental, hostile, slightly homophobic father. He did not love how his father would look at him condescendingly whenever he tried to talk. He did not love his father's rules of the house, nor did he love how his father made him feel small and weak. Blaine did not love being reminded that he hasn't spoken to his brother in over a year. So no, Blaine does not love summer.
During the school year Blaine lives with his Aunt Erin in Lima. Every school break, Christmas, Spring, and Thanksgiving Blaine goes back and stays with his family in Westerville. About two years ago, when Blaine started high school, him and his family (Other than his father that is who stayed in a hotel) stayed with his Aunt while their house was getting remodeled. His mother stayed with the kids because she, and to quote "wouldn't feel right leaving my children". His father, Nathan, had just gotten a bonus and used it to re-due the house. Nathan had been wanting to do it for some time, despite Lilly's (Blaine's mother) best efforts to tell him that the house was fine as it was. Blaine's father was never satisfied with anything. He got a new car every few months, he changed his wardrobe every season, never read the same book twice, and was constantly moving up and around in his job. Blaine was honestly surprised his father has only been married once. And that he hasn't gotten bored with Lilly.
During this time, Blaine and his older brother Cooper had to temporarily move high schools, while his younger sister Dena was home schooled. Their parents felt that a young girl should not be exposed to public school. So for seven months Dena stayed in with their mother and Aunt until the house was finished. Cooper, who was a senior at the time, was suffering from severe senioritis. Basically, he spent more time screwing around (both figuratively and literally, Cooper gained a reputation) then actually doing any school work or applying for colleges. This of course made their father furious. Nathan has a very strict thinking of how his children—specifically his boys—should act. Moreover, he feels that they should go into his line of work and take over his firm. Cooper had no interest in becoming a lawyer of any kind. After Cooper graduated high school he moved to New York. He and Blaine had a major falling out, a falling out that ended in a screaming match, their mother crying and their father giving promised threats. Blaine hasn't spoken to him since. On a good day Blaine acknowledges that he exists. On a bad day he says he only has one sibling.
The school Blaine and Cooper attended for those seven months was McKinely High. The bottom of the barrel of public high schools with no budget for new chairs or extracurricular activities but could get the football team and cheerleaders new uniforms. Teachers on a pension who didn't give a shit anymore, and clichés up the ass that you'd swear you were in a 90's teen comedy. But was in his Aunt Erin's district. Also their father felt it would "build character" having them in public school as he didn't want to raise "entitled rich children". To Blaine that statement made no sense, his father was born into a rich family and stayed rich his whole life. Nathan Anderson has never felt poverty before in his entire life. Hell, Nathan Anderson has never had a haircut that cost less than a hundred dollars. His mother on the other hand, well she knows a thing or two about being poor.
Lilly was born in Manila where she stayed until she was 18. That's when she met Nathan. He was 29 and on a "company retreat". It was more of a pleasure visit than a business one. He saw her and knew he had to have her. Those are his words. Not he fell in love with her, that he had to have her. They married barely a year after they met. He had only been in the Philippines for a month and had taken Lilly back with him. At 20 she gave birth to Cooper. In a way their mother was Nathan's teenage rebellion. His father had wanted him to marry someone of high social standing as to not embarrass the family. Surprisingly, his father took it much better than Blaine would have thought. He excepted Lilly wholeheartedly. Blaine thinks he fell in love with her. Not in a romantic way, of course. It's just that Lilly is so infectious. She lights up a room with her smile, and can drown it with her tears. She is so small and light and full of love it's almost impossible not to fall for her.
Nathan's father insisted she go to school, his reasoning being so she could better fit in and not feel like an outsider. Blaine believes him. His grandfather has always done everything in his power to protect his daughter-in-law. He even got her a speech therapist to help her with her accent. She still has it, but it's faint. Lilly is the kind of woman who would walk through fire if it meant she would make someone happy. A mayor character flaw in Blaine's opinion. She gets used far too often.
At McKinley Blaine tried his best to fit in. That proved to be difficult when dealing with small cow towns that he had no experience in dealing with. Cooper of course abandoned him the second they entered the doors. Blaine hated to admit it, but he really wished his big brother would have stayed with him.
One of the major issues Blaine faced was with what to wear. I know, how teenage girl thought Blaine. But when you've spent your entire school life in a uniform you forget what teenagers wear. Blaine actually did research. Really. Not that Blaine would ever admit to it. But he spent an embarrassing amount of time watching teen TV shows like 90210, One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl to gauge what teens these days wore. Jesus he felt like Coleman from Dream a Little Dream. Maybe his father was right. That's another thing he would never admit to thinking.
Blaine ended up settling on semi tight blue jeans rolled up to expose his ankles, oxfords with no socks, a white button up shirt with a gray and black stripped cardigan over the top. Admittedly his outfit choice was probably a bit too preppy. But at least Blaine had the sense to omit the bow-tie. To say Blaine drew attention to himself was an understatement. A tiny 15-year-old boy in a cardigan? In a high school full of jocks? Who have an affinity for throwing kids in dumpsters? Yeah Blaine was eaten alive.
Funnily enough, before Blaine was thrown into a dumpster, he met a mountain of a boy. Said boy actually helped him find his way to his classes. It wouldn't have been as hard if the classes weren't so screwed up. His schedule said he had English in room 214 with Mrs. Kelly, Algebra in room 220 with Mr. Hasberger, Early American History in room 312 with Miss Fritz, and Spanish room 201 with Mr. Schuester. However, when he went to Room 214 he ended up sitting in to a class on Agriculture. And the teacher was an 80-year-old man who wouldn't stop talking about corn. Not even how to grow corn. Just different ways to eat and cook corn. Blaine felt too awkward to leave the class. He even took notes.
He didn't make the same mistake twice, when he went to Room 220 and the name sign didn't say Mr. Hasberger but instead Mr. Tanaka, he knew something was up. He only had 5 minutes to find his actual class and he was having no luck. The bell rang and he was the only one left in the hall way. Blaine was about to give up and just walk into any class room even if it ended up being about corn again when the mountain of a boy crashed into him. How this boy ran into him when he was literally the only person in the empty hall was beyond Blaine.
"Oh shoot, sorry dude!" The mountain yelled a bit too loudly like he didn't know how to control his volume.
Blaine looked him over, he was certainly tall, newly tall if how he handled himself was anything to go by. Calf on ice to put it bluntly. He had a T-Shirt on over a stripped long sleeve shirt with a weird design that Blaine couldn't place for the life of him. The Mountain's back pack was overflowing with crumpled papers and what looked like gym clothes.
"It's no problem," Blaine replied, smiling. The Mountain seemed put off by the smile, almost like he didn't know what it was.
"Hey, I'm a bit lost-" Blaine started but the Mountain started looking even more uncomfortable. He started shifting his back pack causing even more of his papers to fall out.
"I'm Blaine by the way, I'm new." Blaine tried a different tactic.
"Oh! I'm Finn!" The Mountain newly named Finn gave a dopey smile. Well at least he knows his name, Blaine thought a tad unfairly. "You look new. I mean new to me because I've never seen you before and you look funny like I'd know you if I knew you." Maybe not completely unfair.
"Right," Blaine paused. "Could you please help me? All of the name plates are different and I have no idea where I'm going, I ended up in a class with a 90-year-old man who only talked about corn."
"Oh yeah! I love that class! Super easy, I got a C." What even is this school? "The seniors last year for their senior prank switched all of the name plates. No ones changed 'em back. I can show you where to go. I'm like Colombo, I can find anything."
"Do you mean Columbus?" Blaine didn't even know where to start with what Finn just said. Blaine can already tell this school is going to give him daily migraines.
"Sure whatever," Finn clipped Blaine on the shoulder causing him to lurch forward. "Give me your schedule I'll show you around."
Blaine reached into his messenger bag and pulled out his crisp folder carrying his schedule and handed it over to Finn. Finn practically ripped open the folder like an envelope.
"Allegra huh? You're like smart right?"
"I guess so."
"Cool. Follow me." Finn nodded to himself before slapping Blaine's shoulder again and tripping in the direction of what Blaine could only assume was his next class. This boy was dumb as dumb could be. But Blaine couldn't help but feel endeared by this mess of a boy. Blaine shook his head and smiled to himself following after Finn and they turned left and headed up the stairs.
"Alright History is always upstairs; I don't know why but most kids take Ec classes because they're always by the cafeteria." Finn explained but Blaine was not following in the slightest. "Anyway, looks like we're History buddies!"
"You're in this class too?" Blaine followed closely behind Finn until they reached the stairs when the taller boy began taking the steps two at a time.
"Yup," he emphasized the 'p' making a loud pop with his lips. They took a left up ahead and Finn gracelessly flung open a door to what Blaine could only hope was the door to the history classroom.
A middle aged woman with short very straight blonde hair stood in the front of the classroom. which happened to be right next to the door. She whipped her head around and ever so slightly glared at the two boys. She had dark eyebrows which offset her very blonde hair. Her eyes were almost too small and her nose a little crooked, like shed broken it as a child. Her lips were painted a faint pink, it looked as though she had fallen asleep with her makeup on. She seized up the boys, raising her dark eyebrow in a question.
"Finn, so nice of us to join us, I had hoped this year you'd have learned how to tell time."
"I was just helping this new kid find his classroom, he was super lost!" Finn gave a sheepish smile and gestured towards Blaine who was trying not to seem too awkward when the whole classroom was staring at him. He wasn't succeeding. These kids did not look accommodating at all. If anything they all seemed pretty hostile. A few girls starting whispering to each other, snickering amongst themselves. A few of the boys in letterman jackets eyed him up. Blaine could tell they were excited for new blood. And not in the "let's make friends" kind of way.
"Oh." Miss Fritz appeared to only then notice Blaine's presents. "You much be Blaine Anderson then."
"Yes Ma'am." Quite a few kids laughed at Blaine's, what he would call politeness. Fritz herself looked shocked. Blaine doubted anyone in this school, much less this town, addressed people in this way let alone teachers. This school seemed the place students openly jeered at their teachers and gave them no respect. Again, like a high school movie.
"Finn, why don't you take a seat with Mr. Anderson. I think it would be a good idea for you to show him around the school and help him get to the rest of his classes. Maybe he'll have a good influence on you. Take a syllabus before you sit." Finn groaned as quietly as he could which honestly wasn't all that quiet and took an empty seat near the rear of the class. Blaine followed silently after.
Taking his seat Blaine fished into his messenger bag and got out his text book, a crisp new notebook, and a pencil. Finn just sat there with his bag in his lap.
Half way through the class Blaine had already filled up the better part of two pages in his notebook. Finn had finally gotten out a paper and pencil, but he was doodling little stick men.
"Finn, why don't you answer this question," Miss Fritz said suddenly, knocking Finn out of his day dreaming and doodling, looked up dumbfounded, eyes darting back and forth finally settling on the teacher. She was staring and waiting. Blaine wouldn't be surprised if she starting tapping her foot impatiently.
"Huh?" Finn finally spoke.
"The question Mr. Hudson, please answer it."
"What was the question again?"
Miss Fritz signed dramatically, pushing up her reading glasses she repeated herself as though this was a huge inconvenience to her.
"What was the first official state in the United States?"
Finn sat there for a second staring at her, then he quickly looked down at his paper full of stick man doodles. Perhaps thinking that he had actually written something down during this class period. Blaine took pity on him, this teacher obviously didn't like him, that was apparent from the moment they walked in the door. Blaine started to hate this woman. Although hate would be too strong a word to use. But he definitely felt himself disliking her the more she bullied her students. How did she expect them to want to learn anything when she acted so unsympathetic and downright rude? She was the adult in this situation but she was certainly behaving childishly.
"Delaware," Blaine whispered under his breath hoping Finn could hear him but not Miss Fritz.
Finn glanced at Blaine with furrowed brows. Blaine whispered it again. He could see the moment of realization on the teens face.
"Delaware!" Finn shouted out in almost a question and a discovery.
Miss Fritz honestly just stood there in shock. When she finally recovered all she could say was "Yes, good job," in a slightly accusatory way but she moved on rather quickly.
The remainder of the class was uneventful; Miss Fritz once again went over the syllabus telling each student to remember when she had tests planned because she wouldn't be reminding them. As the bell rang and students began to rush out of the classroom, Finn held Blaine behind, grabbing a hold of his shoulder. For a moment Blaine thought Finn was upset with him. Big jocks don't usually grab you in an empty classroom unless they were planning on punching you. Or kissing you. But Blaine had a feeling it wasn't the latter.
"Hey, so uh…" he began shifting awkwardly from foot to foot scratching his head. "Thanks. For uh, you know. Helping me out. Fritz really has it out for me."
"Yeah of course. I could tell, she's kinda mean."
"She's a bitch is what she is." Blaine laughed a little. Bitch to him was a tad harsh, but in all honesty Blaine had only been around her for 45 minutes. He had no idea how long Finn's had to put up with her. And given how she treated him today, Blaine could see calling her a bitch one day.
They stood there in a slight uncomfortable silence before Finn motioned for them to head out.
"Let me see that schedule, I'll take you to your next class."
Finn showed Blaine around the rest of the day, even when they didn't share classes. Actually they only had two classes together, History and Spanish. Spanish being their last class of the day.
It seemed most of the students did after school activities. Be it cheerleading, football, AV Club, you name it. There was even Farming. An actual after school Farming club. Blaine wondered if it was run by the corn teacher.
"Hey, see ya later," Finn departed Blaine with a wave heading off to football practice.
"Yeah.." was all Blaine supplied. He pulled out his phone to see a message from his Cooper.
Joined football team. Cant take you home.
Blaine sighed. How had they grown apart so fast? He didn't bother dwelling on it. It is what it is, he'd tell himself, and move on.
Luckily for Blaine, his aunts house was only a 10 minute walk from the school. And the weather was looking clear and warm. Besides, Blaine loved walking.
"Hey! New kid!" Blaine looked to the source of the shout. A tall (but not nearly as tall as Finn) bulky boy wearing a football jersey was walking towards him. There were 2 other football players sat his flanks.
Before Blaine could really respond the 3 boys grabbed on to his limbs and hauled him up.
"What the hell?! Put me down!" Blaine tried to throw himself from their holds but they were both too strong and quick and before he knew it Blaine was sitting inside a dumpster. One of those huge all around metal ones.
Blaine wanted to cry. But he didn't. He wouldn't. He didn't know how long he just sat there in the dumpster for, but it was much too long. He was wallowing. But could you blame him? What kind of sick messed up joke involved literally throwing kids away?
"You okay?" a familiar voice asked.
"I've been better." Blaine replied, looking up at Finn from his dumpster hell. Finn held is hand out for Blaine and helped him crawl out of the dumpster.
"Sorry about them," Finn spoke quietly, almost embarrassed.
"It's not your fault." Blaine brushed off as much of the dumpster residue he could from his pants and cardigans. He could already tell his pants were going to stain. He would have to thrown them out. Ironic.
"Hey, listen," Finn started as Blaine began walking (sulking) away, "Do you...Uh." Finn once again looked embarrassed, but for an altogether different reason. "That was super cool what you did back there, you know, in class."
"You already thanked me Finn, it's okay." Blaine honestly just wanted to go home (his aunt's house), take a shower, and sleep. He did not want to deal with anything while covered in whatever the fuck was currently secreting through his pants and onto his skin. This school was turning out to be a nightmare, and one that he was really questioning going back to. Maybe he could convince his parents to home-school him. Or hell, he'd board at Dalton if it meant he wasn't going to get thrown into a dumpster again.
"No no, that's no it." Finn looked Blaine in the eye for probably the first time since pulling him from the garbage. His brow was worried and mouth tense, like he was really trying to say something. Or keep from saying something. "I want you to tutor me."
"What?" That was not where Blaine thought this was going. Hell, Blaine didn't even know what he had expected but this definitely was not it.
"I'm not smart man, I get a C at best in the classes I'm not failing, and it sucks. I hate disappointing my mom you know? And I can't get a football scholarship without at least B grades. And a scholarship is my only hope for getting into college."
This mountain of a boy was truly surprising. Blaine could tell that Finn hadn't meant to share that much, it was apparent by the flush of his cheeks and his shuffling feet. Blaine could absolutely relate. Granted Blaine will never have money problems—unless his father cuts him off, but so far Nathan isn't cruel enough to do that—but he knows disappointment, and impending failure. He knows that pain of seeing a parent so disappointed in you, the look in their eyes. Blaine hates that look in his father's eyes. He sees it almost everyday. Even more so after he came out.
Blaine wanted to bad to help this mountain. But how could he? No way could Blaine juggle his school on top of the bullies. How could Blaine help him if he leaves?
"Finn, I can't." Blaine sighed. Fuck this was harder than he thought. Finn's face instantly fell. "I'm sorry." Blaine gathered himself, cursing internally and started forward, leaving the mountain behind.
"What if I got rid of the jocks?" Finn cried out after Blaine's retreating figure stopping him in his tracks. Blaine whipped around and faced Finn, stretching his neck to look him in the eyes.
"Really?" Blaine inquired. He could not be serious could he?
"Yeah, I know they can be huge jerks."
"But wont that just make you a target?"
"It's okay, don't worry about it. They'll give me a hard time but they get bored easy. As long as you're with me, they wont bother you. Coach is prepping me to be the quarterback."
"You'd really do that?"
"Of course! Like I said, I'm not smart. And I need help. And besides, maybe I could help you fit in! Show you how to be cool and not look weird." Blaine wanted to be offended, and it must have shown on his face because Finn immediately backtracked, flailing his arms around as if trying to fan away his words. "I don't mean you look weird – I mean you kinda do – shit sorry, I don't mean—I mean I dig it, you look like you're going golfing or something." Finn stopped putting his foot in his mouth.
"I'd actually like that. Believe it or not I haven't had to dress for school in-" Blaine stopped, thinking back to a time when he was not in a uniform, "God, I cant even remember."
Finn stood still with a quizzical look on this face, brows furrowed deep in thought. He opened and closed his mouth multiple times almost gaping like a fish before he whispered "Like naked?"
Blaine was perplexed for a few seconds before he understood what Finn was getting at.
"No! No! I went to private schools. We had to wear a uniform." Finn looked relieved and laughed. Blaine started laughing as well. Soon they were doubled over brushing tears from their eyes. Finn clapped Blaine on the shoulder throwing him forward causing even more laughter.
"Thanks," Blaine said finally when the laughter had died down.
"Thanks," Finn retorted. And he held up his fist motioning for Blaine to do the same. And he clocked it down on Blaine's own outstretched fist. And Blaine did the same back.
Kurt will not show up for another 2 or so chapter. you'll have to sit through the Blaine show.
