Hello if there are any new readers to ICYDK! I would greatly advise you to go back and re-read the story, even if you're no tnew! To everyone who has stuck by this story since the beginning, thank you!
There were many things in life that Jennifer Jareau had been unsure of, and whether or not she had expressed those things at the time or not, she had felt them, and sometimes the memory of the unsteadiness of some decisions she had to make ad the things she had gone through still made some sort of dull ache radiate through her entire being as she still tried to mull over whether any decisions she had made were right, for her, for Will or for the two of them combined
But this, she thought, had to be the best thing they had ever done. Brushing away a strand of her hair away from her eyes, she gazed down on the baby, this tiny little person that was sleeping so soundly that her heart would sometimes skip a beat as she watched him sleep, fearing for just a slight moment that perhaps he wasn't breathing. But it had never happened, and her son had just carried on snoozing as contently as ever.
Feeling a presence behind her, JJ glanced over her shoulder, her face crinkling as she saw Will standing in the doorway to the nursery, and something in her chest felt as though it could almost burst.
This was it. For so long, through everything that had happened, an image she had conjured up in her head had made everything seem worth it, that one day they would be a proper family and just be, together. And right now, everything that JJ had ever wanted was right here, in this very room and it was a funny feeling she thought, to get everything you ever wanted she had heard, could feel somewhat bittersweet, as though most of the time, from what she had experienced, the fantasy of something would always be on a different, magical level to the actual reality of it, because surely nothing could be perfect all the time.
And yet, watching this child, her child sleep in his crib, with the man she loved more than she had ever thought possible, who had seem a lot of cap and still woke up every day to tell her that he still felt the luckiest man alive, JJ really doubted how life could get any better than this.
"You gotta let him get some sleep," Will whispered through the dark, the light touch of his hand on her back rousing JJ into action as she inhaled deeply, taking one last look at their son before turning to Will, a half smile on her face. Stepping closer to him, she closed her eyes for a moment, resting her head on his shoulder as she tried to savour this moment. Yes, she knew there would be plenty more, but something just felt right, right now, in this moment and she felt as though she never wanted to let go of how she felt right now. There would always be a dull ache somewhere in her soul as she remembered that right now there could have been two babies fast asleep in this room, two voices that pierced right through her skull as she tried to sleep in on some mornings, but she never forgot and her and Will tried as hard as they could to maintain the vow they had made before the baby was born, that they would never lose themselves in the struggles and hardships of each day but remember that they were the parents to two children, and that was the greatest blessing they could ever ask for, and that together, they were absolutely sure there was nothing that they couldn't face together as a solid unit.
"I love you," she whispered softly, so close to him that her lips managed to just graze the base of his throat, feeling as well as hearing when he said it back. Tears pricked inside her eyelids and she swallowed, laughing softly, shaking her head at the questioning look will shot her.
"Come on, let's get our sleep while we can," she took hold of his hand, and started to lead him out of the nursery. She paused once she made it out and turned, closing the door behind her, leaving it open just slightly so that the light from the hallway illuminated her little sleeping child,
"Love you," she mouthed, smiling, watching for one last time that night as her son's little chest rose and fell with a deep, sleep-induced breath.
As she lay in bed, her hand intertwined with Will's, she inhaled and exhaled heavily, feeling the beginnings of sleep wash over her and closed her eyes, allowing herself to be brought to another land, even if it was for a couple of hours before the baby woke up, but without any hesitation she fell into a deep sleep, holding the hand of the man she loved, and dreamed of children's laughter and summertime picnics in green meadows, with two blond-haired children ran around and screamed at the top of their lungs, calling her Mama.
