Title: Eyes that Kill
Chapter 5: Revelation
A/N: Hey everyone sorry it took so long to post. It's taken awhile to get back into the swing of everything. Let me know what you like, what you don't. Let me know if there are any inconsistencies. But also remember this might not align perfectly with the canon.
A moment of stunned silence followed Kagome's admission of her blindness. A bemused smile settled on the so-called miko's lips as she waited patiently. No one ever seemed to believe her when she first told them.
"Bloody hell, really you're blind? Like you can't see any of us?" Ron spoke up as his freckled face peered into Kagome's sightless eyes before waving a hand in front of her face.
"Ronald!" Hermione quickly smacked her friend upside the back of his head, her face flushing in embarrassment on his behalf. Here she had just met a world renown miko who had a story to rival Harry's and Ron Weasley decided to act like a fool.
Fred and George shook their heads admonishingly at their younger brother as they both seemed to contemplate how they were related to such a dolt. Honestly, the boy had no tact sometimes.
Unoffended, Kagome's smile remained on her face as she heard Ron mumble at Hermione to not assault him.
"Yes," Kagome began, her voice instantly quieting the group. "I am blind. I cannot see any of you as one might traditionally see."
"I-I remember your brother, Souta, had said you were only recently blind," Harry recalled from his memory, thinking of how he had first learned she was blind. "You weren't always blind?" 'How…'
Her smile never leaving her face, Kagome focused on Harry's somewhat nervous figure. She could feel his agitated aura and tried to soothe it by minisculely releasing tiny tendrils of her own calm aura. Watching him visibly relax Kagome's smile wilted minutely as she answered him.
"No. I wasn't always blind." Kagome said her voice lowered as her eyelids drooped over her eyes. "My blindness was my own fault. Unfortunately, it's not a natural blindness. Magic cannot fix it."
"You had said you cannot traditionally see?" Hermione asked after a moment sensing the miko's mood had saddened and was still curious about the previous odd wording Kagome had chosen.
Harry waited somewhat impatiently with the Weasley's for Kagome's response as she tilted her head to the side and seemed to take her time thinking of how she would answer.
"I can see in a sense," Kagome said slowly to make sure she was accurately translating her thoughts from Japanese to English.
Nodding her head in Harry's direction, "You had asked what a miko is."
Returning her nod but stopping after a moment since she technically couldn't see Harry verbally agreed.
"Yes, I did."
"A miko, is a priestess. In Japan there are different religions and gods. Priestesses perform religious rituals and ceremonies in Japan in honor of the Kami they serve. However, before the world had industrialized and magic and demons roamed freely, priestesses would protect their villages from demons and were skilled medics."
Pausing Kagome pet Kirara absently as she nudged her hand.
"Priestesses were imbued with purity from the kami allowing them to purify demons and stay uncorrupted when facing evil. Sensing auras or sensing a person's soul is second nature to mikos. The way I see is by feeling the auras around me and by trusting my instincts." Kagome finished shrugging slightly at the end. Trusting her instincts, for her, was a big part of seeing.
The group of witches and wizards all glanced at each other all trying to absorb the information they had just been given. They had all had a short lesson on demons, nothing too extensive, even Hermione had difficulty researching too much on the subject that was deemed unnecessary since demons had always evaded the western wizarding world. Most of the information on demons were found in fairytale books or historical asian texts that seemed so strange and impossible even the magical world has cast aside the notion of demons as creatures only found in nightmares and the unknown parts of the oriental.
Blinking Kagome could tell by their auras they were confused. She had already guessed that the younger wizards and witches knew very little about mikos and demons if their parents and guardians' reactions were anything to go by.
"Your curriculum doesn't cover eastern magic very extensively does it?" Kagome asked after the silence continued to ensue.
"Not really," Ginny Weasley spoke up for the first time since they had moved into the room. "My past year we just learned demons are evil creatures from distant lands and eastern magic isn't as powerful as our own. It wasn't exactly taught as a very serious subject."
Sighing Kagome pondered how she would help this magical world. If they believed eastern magic wasn't powerful and didn't know about demons beyond what old fairytales told them she wasn't sure she would be able to help them fight.
"Demons are very much real. Although, very different from how the fairytales might depict them," Kagome acquiesced. "Not all demons are bad and not all are good, just like humans. As far as eastern magic goes it is different but no less effective than the magic you are taught."
"Makes sense to you Gred?," George said with a shrug, Fred mimicked his actions. "Definitely, Forge."
Giggling at the twins' names for each other Kagome appreciated their lighthearted antics.
"Kagome," Harry began, focused solely on the girl before him. A question had been bothering him from the beginning when he had first seen her on the doorstep. "Why are you here?"
Smile tightening Kagome's head dropped as if to look at the ground, her bangs obscuring what little they could see of her eyes.
"I am here to help."
No matter how much they had questioned and, in the case of the Weasley twins, pestered Kagome wouldn't go into detail and her answers to most of their following questions remained vague. She cited Dumbledore as part of her rather unhelpful answers and noticed how Harry's aura had darkened in frustration.
The boy was clearly upset with the Headmaster she assumed it was from his cold attitude earlier but the pain Harry was emitting seemed so woeful and Dumbledore's own aura had been sorrowful she couldn't help wondering what was going on between the professor and pupil.
The rest of the night after realizing they wouldn't get many answers out of the miko was spent with the group telling her about Hogwarts. The Golden Trio told them about their adventures and Kagome knew her eyebrows probably rose into her hairline. How was it possible for Harry Potter and his friends to always have such bad fortune to deal with this He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named guy. Fred and George told her about the many pranks they pulled and showed her their different inventions. They were extremely pleased when she reacted with the perfect amount of enthusiasm and curiosity only to be overjoyed when she continuously asked all the right questions and offered small suggestions.
Ginny told Kagome about her first year being bewitched by Tom Riddle's diary. From her own experience being under another's control, Kagome felt somewhat connected to the youngest Weasley and was pleased she had resolved to become a fantastic witch so she would never be bewitched again.
After hours of talking and listening Kagome was only somewhat relieved when Molly Weasley came in to usher everyone to sleep.
"Kagome dearie there's a room down the hall I'll take you to," Mrs. Weasley said after making sure her children were all off to bed, Fred and George learning how to apparate was going to drive her insane she was sure of it.
Veiling her intrigue as the two older teen wizards 'disapparated' with loud pops Kagome glanced up feeling their auras appear on the floor above her. Rising from her seat on the floor Kagome dusted herself off picking a sleeping Kirara up with her.
"Goodnight, I enjoyed talking to you all," Kagome said to the Golden Trio and Ginny as she followed Ms. Weasley from the room.
Murmuring sleepy goodnight's in response Ginny and Hermione moved to follow and go to their own room only for Hermione to pause and shut the door after Ginny had sleepily exited and the sound of the door clicking open next door was heard.
Both boys shared a confused glance before focusing their attention on Hermione's tense back. They had noticed their typically somewhat nosy and inquisitive friend hadn't gone into questioning Kagome as deeply as they were sure she had wanted. It had been obvious from her previous astonishment at Kagome's name that she knew more about the miko than any of them.
"Hermione, aren't you going to sleep?" Ron asked a brow raised as Hermione slowly turned to face them her face scrunched up in thought.
"Sleep can wait, Ronald," Hermione admonished as she crossed her arms. "Kagome Higurashi being here cannot be good, especially if Professor Dumbledore had to ask her to come."
"Well she said she's here to help so she must mean helping against Voldemort," Harry stated matter of factly ignoring how Ron flinched at hearing his name. "It seems as though Dumbledore has been rounding up a lot of people to join the Order."
Hermione sighed in aggravation wishing her two male friends had done more studying with her when she had insisted it would help them. Of course, her demands had been ignored in favor of slacking off.
"Kagome is different," Hermione stressed. "Honestly, she seems to be quite different from the legends I read about her after all they never mentioned she had become blind. But then again they did end after her final battle. The fact that she's alive seems impossible but I suppose other wizards have been able to retain their longevity, I mean look at Nicholas Flamel and the Sorcerer's Stone."
Trying to catch their minds up with Hermione's rambling thoughts Ron looked completely lost while Harry wasn't faring too much better.
"Uhhh what are you talking about Hermione?" Harry finally spoke up, interrupting Hermione's rant.
Seeing how lost her friends looked Hermione sighed and dropped down onto the mattress across from the one they were sharing. Brushing a hand through her curled hair she racked her brain on how to give them a more condensed version of the legend she had read.
"Any day now," Ron mumbled grumpily, earning a look from both his friends. The youngest male Weasley was tired and felt like pulling out his orange strands from the amount of information he had received...or lack of information? He was at his wits end having looked forward to getting some well deserved sleep only to be even more confused by Hermione's unyielding rant.
"Well, Ronald," Hermione began tersely, her lips thinning only to release a long sigh. "Kagome Higurashi is a famous miko who was somehow thrown into the past to protect a magical item. She fought demons for years. Her story is the most famous legend in Japan for muggles and magical communities. I found that legend after researching some magical creatures that lived in Japan for Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid in our third year."
"Yeah, I don't think Hagrid ever asked for those papers," Ron mumbled.
"Anyways the legend of the Shikon no Tama kept appearing, the Jewel of Four Souls," Hermione didn't pay Ron any mind as she delved into her mental archives. "It's tragic and brutal...if Kagome's story is real she is powerful, probably one of the most powerful magical beings in existence."
Hermione's voice faded as her eyebrows knit together in confusion obviously trying to understand an important part of the story.
"Hermione what is the legend? How does it go?" Harry urged somewhat impatiently. He had spent a large part of the summer intrigued by the odd miko especially after not receiving any correspondence from his two friends much of his time was spent mulling over the blind and beautiful young woman.
"The text was a rough translation from an ancient scroll that Hogwarts' library had a transcript from so not all of it is complete or makes sense," Hermione prefaced and received nods of acknowledgement from her friends. "In Japan there always existed a balance between humans and demons. Both sides fought to gain control, the evil demons were more powerful and so the gods gifted a chosen few with powers that could fight and even kill demons they were deemed holy people. Over a thousand years ago a powerful priestess was eradicating the evil demons and humans began to expand their borders. So the demons gathered and attacked her; she battled for seven days and nights. But she was deadlocked...both sides were equally strong. She ended up using her magic to enclose her and her enemies within a Jewel and supposedly she would battle them within the Jewel for eternity. The legend goes that the Jewel can make any wish come true. To protect it from impure wishes a village with a powerful miko was entrusted with the jewel."
Hermione took a breath before continuing.
"After that, the jewel was passed down through that village from miko to miko. And then the jewel disappeared."
"Disappeared? So much for guarding it…" Ron said with a snort.
Hermione merely shrugged, "Unfortunately that was part of the legend that wasn't clear from the transcript. But some events happened that caused it to disappear...a century or so later it reappeared and shattered. The legend goes that each shard of the jewel could make you stronger beyond imagination but it could not grant a true wish until it was whole. Demons looked for the pieces and became stronger, terrorizing the lands. But they began to fall as a strong miko and a group of people she helped traveled across the land hunting the shards down to keep the jewel from the wrong hands. Their strongest opponent was a dark demon twisted by selfish desire...Eventually they defeated the demon and that is where the legend ends. The only name that was mentioned on the transcript was 'Kagome Higurashi,' the kind miko who saved as many demons as she killed."
Looking up to meet the disbelieving eyes of her friends Hermione offered a small smile, "I know it sounds crazy even as far as magic goes...I mean how is it possible that she is in this time even time turners wouldn't be able to send her that far or forward in time. A lot of it doesn't add up. But the name Kagome Higurashi is not common, I tried to find more information about her and she pops up in legends relating to that era of time but then it's like she simply disappeared. But she was the last powerful miko to have existed...the fact that a Kagome Higurashi who's no less a miko is here at the order is too much of a coincidence."
Harry and Ron nodded their agreement.
"What do you suppose happened to the jewel?" Ron asked. "If she is the miko from the legend does she have the jewel?"
Hermione pursed her lips. She could see Harry's eyes darkening at the mention of the jewel and she knew immediately what he was thinking. It was the same thought he had when he looked into the Mirror of Erised, the same desire. Seeing her friend struggling was heartbreaking but she steeled her resolve to hope that Harry wouldn't think to ask about the jewel.
"I doubt she has it, they most likely wished for its disappearance when they won. The jewel is never mentioned after that era," Hermione stated.
Looking away from his friends Harry sighed and his green eyes lightened drastically.
"I guess the biggest question then is why does Dumbledore- why does the Order need the help of Kagome...and can she help?" Harry asked quietly.
Silence engulfed the room as they thought about why Dumbledore would call upon supposedly one of the most powerful beings still existing. Of course, they needed strong witches and wizards to fight Voldemort but Kagome wasn't a witch, she was a miko.
…
…
…
"Merlin's beard! She must be ancient!"
Sighing softly Kagome took the extendable ear out and watched as it retracted back into her hand. George and Fred had quietly handed it to her with a wink from each twin. They had mentioned that she might need a wand to make it work but nudging it with her miko ki, the extendable ear had worked as they had said.
Mulling over the conversation she had eavesdropped on Kagome pet Kirara absently. While the story Hermione had told was obviously a very shortened version Kagome couldn't help but wonder what the original text Hermione had gotten the transcript from. She was an exceedingly smart witch, one who would probably be able to piece together what had happened eventually.
Smirking as she thought about Ron's loud exclamation Kagome had to admit to herself that she did feel a lot older than she looked.
Shoulders dropping Kagome curled up in the bed placing Kirara gently beside her. Already she was feeling overwhelmed. She had known upon accepting Dumbledore's invitation to learn more about the western magical world there was something he was not revealing. This Voldemort sounded similar to Naraku in many ways and she felt uneasy. She had not fought since she had become blind. Of course, she could still use a bow and arrow and was easily able to defeat minor youkai that lingered around the Higurashi Shrine but she had put wars and battles in the past. She had done her duty and she had paid for it. Now while she should have only been concerned with her family and their business she was contemplating participating in a war that had nothing to do with her.
But in only a short amount of time after meeting the next generation of witches and wizards Kagome knew she couldn't leave them. They all spoke passionately and when they had explained more about the Order and Voldemort Kagome could feel the raw emotion burning into her soul. The boys were gung-ho about joining the Order but she had simply frowned at their starry-eyed, romanticized version of participating in the anticipated war. There was nothing magical about war, nothing glorifying, the only known outcome of any war was that there would be death and she could feel in her core that there would be a lot of death.
"This is not my war.." Kagome murmured as Kirara yawned and blinked up at her mistress. "But, I will do everything I can to help these witches and wizards against this Voldemort."
She only hoped that it would be enough.
Sesshomaru had lived many centuries although his appearance remained unchanged he had adapted to each century and learned how to blend in. Far from his previous disposition of seeking world domination he had willfully allowed humans to believe they were the only intelligent species and had the youkai communities fade into the background. Similar to how his father had hidden Tetsusaiga in a different dimension, Sesshomaru had created an agreement with Enma for youkai to live in Makai, a dimension right beside Ningenkai. Not all youkai agreed with the approach and he had heard the rumors of an uprising against Enma, the lords who ruled Makai, and humanity.
When Albus Dumbledore sent two owls, one to him and the other to Kagome, Sesshomaru immediately melted the letter with his poison after reading it. He had come across the wizarding communities a few centuries ago. Their numbers had grown since then and more magical people seemed to pop up everywhere. Sesshomaru's eyebrow twitched at the thought. More wizards had traveled to Japan than ever in hopes of discovering 'new' magical creatures. However, many species in Japan were immune from the magic they used and Sesshomaru had to begrudgingly send youkai loyal to him to save the foolish wizards.
After disposing of the letter, Sesshomaru was surprised to learn Kagome had also received a letter from the old wizard.
The miko's acceptance to meet the wizard concerned Sesshomaru. Kagome even with her blindness had fully evolved into her powers. But the magical communities were still new to her and had the possibility of being a threat. Voldemort was an unknown, yes he had heard of a few decades before of a wizard rampaging across Europe but had paid it no mind. Unless the wizard crossed into his territory he would not act.
Uncharacteristically, drumming his fingers against his desk, Sesshomaru's golden gaze narrowed on the door to his office. The kitsune was late again. For centuries Sesshomaru had watched over Kagome's overactive kitsune. While taking care of Rin had been easy the kitsune had caused him to feel like ripping out his silver locks on more than one occasion. He had become a victim of Shippo's erratic kitsune tendencies and...pranks. He only stilled his hand from maiming the kit due to his mother.
The door clicked open and the subject of Sesshomaru's thoughts cheerily walked in. Eyebrow twitching Sesshomaru's teeth audibly came together as Shippo blew a large bubble of gum bigger than his head before it popped onto his face.
Prowling over to a chair in front of Sesshomaru's desk Shippo plopped down haphazardly a wicked gleam in his eye as he continued to loudly chew his gum. His favorite pastime over the years had been to find new ways to annoy the old taiyoukai and he new Sesshomaru would never forget the time he had first introduced him to chewing gum Kagome had left him.
Watching the kitsune's cat-like smile widen Sesshomaru knew what the kit was thinking and before Shippo could blink the gum started to burn as acid from a prick of Sesshomaru's poison began to eat away at it.
Hurriedly spitting the gum out before the acid began to eat away at him, Shippo turned back to glare at Sesshomaru, his grin gone.
"That was soooo unnecessary," Shippo drawled with a huff as he crumpled back into his chair.
"Kitsune you will cease wasting my time," Sesshomaru commanded as he leveled Shippo with his own glare. "There are more important matters to discuss."
Sighing Shippo nodded. As much as Sesshomaru and he had had their ups and downs over the years he did have profound respect and loyalty to the taiyoukai that had mentored him. He knew Sesshomaru only had the best interests for his mother.
"The Voldemort character these wizards are scared of has begun to pull youkai to his side," Shippo began. "Lower to mid-level youkai have joined him. I checked in on the claims before coming and they're true. Right now I don't think there is too much to worry about but wizards and youkai don't mix. I think the outcome of such a union could be disastrous."
Mulling over Shippo's report, Sesshomaru nodded absently before rising from his chair and making his way over to the window. Looking across the lands he had managed to keep out of human hands Sesshomaru sighed deeply. The last true war that wasn't just ningen warfare had been during Kagome's time in the feudal era. The new age of technology and humanity were not ready to be exposed to the extreme destruction of magic and youkai.
"We will make preparations to quell any unrest. For now we will not engage with this Lord Voldemort...this is still a wizard issue," Sesshomaru ordered. "Kagome will be the only point of contact for this man."
About his displeasure as Sesshomaru's decisions, Shippo's teeth clicked shut when he was turned on with a warning glare. "Your mother knows what she is doing. If she has decided to help the wizards that is her choice and you will not stop her. Should she be threatened or harmed...then I will reevaluate the situation. As it stands this Voldemort is not an imminent threat."
Frowning but not speaking against his lord Shippo nodded in agreement as he thought about his okaasan. He knew she would be okay with the wizards she had always been able to pull people in but he would worry about her fragility, her health, and her humanity.
"Have you made any progress in finding a way to cure her?" he finally asked hanging the subject.
"Nothing that would leave her intact."
Silence engulfed the room as both youkai contemplated what the next few years would bring. Something needed to change but the catalyst for such change would not be pretty.
A/N: So the story Hermione told is different from what actually happened. Remember she only found a transcript of a legend that is orally told in Japan. Thanks for reading!
