Chapter 7: Book Return Part 1
*1 month later*
Natsu barged into Harry's room. "Hey Harry! Want to come with me on a mission?"
He waited for Harry, still soaking wet from the bath, to quickly cover himself with a towel. "Oh hey, did you just take a bath?" he asked, stating the obvious.
"I did," replied Harry. "Hold on, let me change my clothes first..."
"I'll wait for you at the guild, okay?"
"Sure."
Harry liked Natsu. Along with Cana, Natsu was the other person he got along with the most. He was quite hotheaded and always eager for a fight (usually with Gray), but Natsu was always there when you need him and he can be surprisingly smart when he wanted to be.
He settled for wearing a maroon shirt with black pants before heading for the guild. Natsu was waiting for him at the guild hall, next to the bulletin board.
"So what's the job?" asked Harry.
Natsu held up the mission request. "We have to retrieve a-"
"If you say cat I'm going to say no."
Natsu grinned widely at the memory of two ragged, mud-covered, and seriously peeved children entering the guild hall after their mission. When asked what happened, their only reply was 'cat'.
It got especially pitiful and hilarious when the same thing happened again a week later.
"Nope, not a cat! It's a book! The owner apparently forgot about it on Hargeon town and they can't bring it back themselves. They're also paying 100,000 Jewels for it, so we're gonna have a lot of cash if we complete it."
"What's the name of the book?" asked Harry, curious about its importance.
Natsu looked at the job request again. "It's called the Witch and the Wolf, heard of it?"
Harry shook his head. "No, how about you?"
"Me neither. Maybe we can ask our client when we get to him," replied Natsu.
"Good idea."
Their client was a thin, lanky man named Milo.
"You're the people from Fairy Tail?" he asked when he saw them.
"That's us," said Harry, he and Natsu showing him their Fairy Tail guild mark.
Milo rubbed the back of his head, expression doubtful. "I...wasn't really expecting some kids to be the ones who would answer my request." He opened the door to let them in. The room smelled of books, first and foremost, and every wall was lined with shelves upon shelves of books. In the center of the room was a table with a typewriter, along with some things that looked like archeological tools next to it.
Harry could see lacrima, magical devices that store magic power, installed on the ceiling that act as lightbulbs.
Milo gave his guests a look. "Are you really sure you can do it? I mean, Hargeon's on another town..."
"No need to worry about that!" said Natsu, his confidence soaring. "I can fry anyone with my fire and Harry is a master of escaping people, right Harry?"
'Please don't bring that up, Natsu. You're going to make the client think we're delinquents,' thought Harry, but he nodded his head nonetheless. "Please don't take it the wrong way sir, I was just bullied a lot before I joined Fairy Tail."
"Well, okay, nice of you to join Fairy Tail then." said Milo. He walked to a nearby bookshelf and took out a book. Harry wondered how that man managed to find that particular book amongst the sea of other books, but he kept that thought to himself.
Maybe Milo was just really organized, no matter how chaotic his room looked like.
Milo placed the book in front of them. It was a paperback book, not unlike the one he had read some time ago, entitled The Witch and The Wolf. "The book that was lost was a hard-bound copy of The Witch and The Wolf. It's a fairy tale-"
Harry and Natsu perked up slightly.
"TALE, as in a story, not TAIL, as in the long appendage sticking out of a cat's butt."
Milo's two audience members laughed at his joke, and he smiled as well.
"Sir, what's an appendage?" asked Natsu.
"A body part, like your arm, or a cat's tail."
"Why don't humans have tails?"
"They say a long time ago we did have tails, but as time went on, we no longer found any use for them, so they eventually just disappeared." said Milo.
Realizing that they've gone off topic, he coughed. "Anyway, the book you're looking for is called The Witch and The Wolf. It's a fairy, ahem, an old story about a thief who tried to steal from a rich noble. Unfortunately, he was captured, and the noble punished him by having a witch, who worked for him, to curse the man into becoming a wolf. Anyway, the book looks like-"
"What happened next?" asked Harry.
'Note to self, specify which Fairy Tail member to contract next time,' thought Milo.
"What happened next was that the witch tried to put the curse on the man, but the man broke free of his restraints and attacked the witch just as she finished the spell. It caused the curse to malfunction, instead of transforming the man into a wolf, he only turned into a wolf-man. The witch, on the other hand, was horribly scarred by the explosion, and she fled the noble's house in rage, shame, and despair."
He closed the book that he was holding. "And that's The Witch and The Wolf."
"What happened to the wolf and the witch?" asked Natsu.
Milo sighed and continued his story. "No one is really sure about what happened next. Some say that the witch died a few years after, while others believe that she's still alive somewhere, still trying to find a cure for her scars. As for the wolf, nobody knows."
He shrugged. "Anyway, I'll tell you about it when you bring the book back, okay?"
"Okay," said Harry, sounding mildly disappointed. "Er, where did you leave the book?"
"It was on a new bar called The Boar's Hat. You can find it on a hill on the outskirts of town." He tapped his chin thoughtfully. "Strangely enough, I don't remember a hill when I went there last time."
"What does the book look like?"
Milo stood up and took another book from the shelves. It was a leather-bound book entitled Atlantis: The Lost Empire. "The book looks like this, except it has The Witch and The Wolf on the cover. My name is also printed on the inside of the book, so you'll definitely know if it's the one," he said.
He also took out something from his pocket. It turned out to be a letter assigned to the owner of The Boar's Hat. "Take this, if the owner found the book and stored it away, he might give it back to you if you give him this letter. He looks like a teenager with blond hair. When I went there last time, he was wearing a black vest with white shirt and pants."
Harry took the letter and jotted down what he said on a notebook. "Okay, I think we got everything, anything you want to add Natsu?"
"Nope. Come on, I can't wait to finish this mission!" said Natsu. He stood up from his seat. "Let's go, we have to pack our stuff and get ready!"
"Well sir, we'll be going now."
Milo gave them a soft smile and opened the door for them.
"Good luck. When you find the book, come back to me as soon as you can," he said. Then, his eyes became serious. "The book is very precious to me, but I will never forgive myself if anything happens to you kids. If trouble arises, leave the book and come back home as quickly as possible, am I clear?"
He tone gave no room for negotiation, and Harry and Natsu nodded quickly at the same time.
"Yes sir."
"Yes sir."
They returned to the guild that night to pack their bags and begin their trip to Hargeon town.
Little did they know of the adventures and dangers that await them there.
Author's Note: There are no characters, if I recall correctly, that are named Cena and Milo in Fairy Tail, but I think I gave enough references to figure out where they came from.
There really was a special crossover chapter between Fairy Tail and Seven Deadly Sins, but it was a Christmas Special and Meliodas, Elizabeth, and Hawk were just visiting Magnolia Town.
