50. Annabeth realized she loved Percy when she saw him holding up the sky with her on Mount Tam. He was a hallucination, but he was the only thing that kept her strong enough to survive.
"Luke!" Annabeth screamed, "Help me!" But Luke just backed away, purposely not looking at the pain and confusion etched across Annabeth's face.
Annabeth fell to her knees, the weight of the sky crushing into her back, a pain more intense than fire coursing through her body. Red splashed across her vision and her arms were seconds away from giving out and letting the sky crush her, but for some crazy reason she was still holding it. She could feel the tears streaming down her face, running together with the sweat pouring down her face, so she couldn't tell which was which.
She didn't know how long it had been, but suddenly the burden seemed lighter. She looked over and gave a cry mixed with longing and excitement, "Percy!"
"Annabeth!" He said, struggling under the weight of the sky as well. "Don't worry, okay? I'm here to help you. I won't leave you. I promise."
Tears continued to stream down her face, and for a second she realized Percy had only seen her cry once. She felt weak and embarrassed, but when he looked over into her eyes, she realized she didn't care. Percy was here. That's what she cared about. Her eyes never left his for as long as they held the sky together.
When Artemis relieved her of her burden, Annabeth worried that Percy would be crushed. When she turned around before she passed out, she realized Percy wasn't there. He had never been there in the first place. She gave a cry of despair, which Luke and Atlas took as a cry of relief, but was really the cry of a broken heart.
Even after Percy and Thalia and Grover rescued her from Atlas, she never told Percy what she had seen on Mount Tam. She was too embarrassed and confused about her conflicting feelings with Luke to tell him. But she never forgot. When he went missing, sometimes she would see him there, telling her everything was going to be okay, and that he would never leave her. And that's how she knew that she was going to see him again.
So yeah. I got this idea from a headcanon I read and I was inspired. I'm really excited about the response I've been getting from my stories! I'm so glad you all like them:)
