Leave It Alone
"That's it? That's what you wanted to tell me?"
"Well, yeah." Sam's brows knitted in puzzlement as Ben rolled his eyes. Next to Sam, Lisa and Dean exchanged a look.
"Sam, I've known all about your big, hairy secret for years. Since I was ten, as a matter of fact. You guys aren't exactly subtle, you know. Did you really think I wouldn't notice Mom arranging for me to sleep over at a friend's house whenever you were here? And then, when you moved in, every time I came home from a school trip, I'd find something you left in Mom's room."
Dean snorted. "See, what'd I tell you?"
Sam shook his head. Had he really been that careless? Apparently, he had.
"It's okay", Ben said patiently. "You treat Mom good, just like Dean does. You treat me good. What you guys do when you're alone is nobody else's business."
Sam let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. He, Dean, and Lisa agreed that Ben had the right to know about their unorthodox relationship, but they had also agreed that he needed to be old enough to at least try to understand. They settled on Ben's seventeenth birthday as a date. Ben's reaction was unexpected, to say the least.
"So you can stop looking all freaked out, okay?" Ben shook his head and got up from the table. "I love you guys. We all love each other—everything's cool."
"Okay. Well. We just wanted you to be prepared. We didn't know what people might say at school or in the community or-"
"Dude. I told you, it's cool. The only thing you guys need to do is stop pretending you're brothers. It's kind of lame, now that I'm not a little kid. See ya!" Ben grinned and gave all three of them a wink as he bounded from the kitchen, basketball under his arm.
"What? But—"
Grinning with relief, Dean put a hand on Sam's arm and shook his head. "Leave it alone, Sammy. Just leave it alone."
