Ever since they were kids they stayed by each other. Through worst and through happiness, they shared the moment together.
A boy with blonde hair and a smile like the sun with his shadow, the pale sensitive boy with eyes of ink and strands of coal. They matched their steps, synchronized their reactions and made sure they were always beside each other in class- throughout kindergarten to high school.
Like color on paper, they somehow fit like that; a picture of an autumn leaf on powder snow, out of place but just mesmerizing enough that no one can imagine them any other way. If Naruto was mentioned an image of his dark haired companion instantly came to mind.
It was natural; after all, bright mornings are always followed by dark nights. An unbreakable sequence made to repeat till the end of time.
That is how people remember them now. Since time stood still on one rainy day. Two high schools boys strolling on the sidewalk, on their way to school- Fingers softly interlacing together then breaking free, as if too shy to stay too close. As ironic as that may seem, they were too embarrassed to show that sort of affection in public.
An empty intersection and a careless teen attitude.
One moment of recklessness and plain impatience, they tried to cross to the other side of the street without bothering to look around. Sasuke, too busy with fixing the cuffs of his white school shirt, and Naruto grumbling about rainy mornings.
The smell of burning rubber and screeching tires followed sickly thud of bodies against a metal hood.
The car sped away and two figures lay in the middle of the street, the street signal flashing green above them.
White shirts splattered with red and hair drenched with muddy drain water, one shoe on the far end of the pavement and a torn school bag slowly filling up with water, droplets of rain soaking through assignments that had taken them weeks to prepare for.
A slight movement occurs.
Naruto struggling to turn on his side to check on his most precious. Sasuke was long gone. His eyes closed in peace. Naruto hissed as pain exploded in his chest and shoulder, blood seeping through his teeth and down the side of his face. Once pure blue eyes were covered in red, like Sasuke's shirt and skin. Gravel scratched his palm as he slid it across the small gap between them, towards the lifeless body beside him, hand tugging weakly but not managing enough strength to pull the other closer. Finally giving up, his hands slid down the smeared buttons of the white shirt to rest in a cold pale hand, fingers intertwining.
They needed each other to know the way. To heaven or hell, to the next life. They would guide each other.
With one shuddering breath the blue eyes slid closed.
Both hands intertwined- a dark tanned palm trying to give warmth to a tender pale one, always trying to comfort. An unbreakable sequence made to repeat till the end of time.
-And what is yet to come.
