Nick sat down by the fire and looked into the flames, deep in thought.
The yellow in the fire reminded him of the beautiful dress she'd worn when they were 15. It was a school dance, and Nick had always hated those kind of events but he promised her that he would go. When she'd walked in, he was stunned by her beauty. Too bad he wasn't the boy she wanted. She wanted Adam, and who was Nick to intervene? So he stood on the sidelines as she took Adam's arm and flirted with him shamelessly.
Nick looked up to the dark blue sky and sighed. Everything reminded him of her. He let another image from the past come to him.
She had on dark blue shoes that didn't go with he red dress at all. Nick had almost laughed out loud at the sight. They were 17 now, and she still didn't understand fashion. The scary thing was that Nick did, but he had no shame in it. She'd looked up at him and smiled, noticing that he was looking at her. She made her way toward him and asked if he liked her shoes. Nick merely shook his head and told her that it was something that only she would do. She smiled, thinking it was a compliment, but Nick really wasn't sure what it was.
Nick heard a noise and turned around to find the girl that had been clouding his thoughts all night. She smiled at him and took a seat on the log he was sitting on.
He was happy in silence, and he realized something that he hadn't before. The girl sitting next to him was everything he'd ever wanted. She was smart and cute and funny. He realized that her was in love with this girl, and he loved all of her quirks, like her lame fashion sense for example.
He turned to her and kissed her cheek. She beamed at him and took his hand. Then it was clear to him as well. She loved him too.
"Took you long enough." she said with a chuckle.
With that he leaned in and kissed her like he'd always wanted to.
