Kirihara Kick

A week before school started, Gensaburo had the tennis team- including the graduated seniors- meet him. They were instructed to where their work out clothes, and to gather at the tennis courts. They all filtered in slowly, chatting and catching up after the break. The graduates were touching base with a few of the players, doling out advice, and just enjoying the atmosphere. Gensaburo was hidden behind the bleachers watching everything with his brother, Seiichi, and Renji.

"Everyone arrived," Yanagi informed them.

"Everyone? I thought we would lose some?" Gen-chan was impressed. Every player from last year had returned.

"There was one student that transferred to Osaka and one student was sent abroad," Yanagi said after referencing his notes.

"We should begin now. We have a full day ahead of us," Seiichi spoke up.

Nodding, Gensaburo straightened his clothes and led the way out.

"Thank you of all for coming. I want to make some announcements before school starts," He began. Everyone stopped and gave him their full attention. He had a really respectful team.

"This year I will only be working with the tennis team on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays," He informed the team. "I will be joining the archery team and will need to dedicate some time to them and any tournaments. I fully believe that your captain and vice captain, Yukimura-san and Sanada-san will be able to handle everything on the days I am not around."

There was low murmur as the players took a moment to whisper to their friends. Gensaburo had sat down with his grandfather for a while to talk about this. He loved tennis but he also wanted to see how far he could go with archery. Archery was something he had chosen to pursue himself and to not compete and see how far he could go would be sad thing. They had worked out a schedule to balance his school work, tennis, archery, kendo and magical studies. He was going to be a very busy boy.

When the murmurs calmed down a little, he continued. "I hope you all understand that this isn't a slight against you or the club. I will always give my all so that we may win another national tournament!"

The players cheered. They also started calling out encouragements, hoping he will give his all and do his best with archery. He even heard one say that if the Archery club didn't treat him well, they would steal their targets.

He wasn't abandoning them, but taking time to be a normal student as well. Sometimes they forgot he was younger than them all, seeing as he was in a position of teaching, but they still wanted him to have fun.

"Second, we need to decide on the new regulars. We have some spots to fill. If you would like to challenge for a spot, please step forward."

A large number of students stepped forward, including some that Gensaburo was hoping would try. They sectioned them off by who wanted to challenge who and then got started. Since there was a fair number of students wanting to try, they had a small competition between hopefuls first. When they got to the final two, they took a lunch break to let the challengers rest and refuel. After that, they let them challenge the regulars.

Marui Bunta had made a smart move to challenge Aikawa, the former captain. Gensaburo had talked to him the day before and laid out everything. He was good player, had some genius ideas, but he lacked the stamina to challenge one of the big three.

"Your pet project will be a regular this year," Genichirou said as he walked up beside Gen-chan.

After working with the red head all of last year, he was glad to see that his idea's were having a real impact on the youth. Having a brother and best friend that were natural tennis geniuses made things easier when it came to coaching, but seeing an average boy putting in so much hard work to achieve this crazy yet brilliant ideas was amazing. Marui would be a real asset and star player for Rikkaidai. "Hopefully. He's worked hard and he will go far."

"He will be good with the new recruits. He is patient and friendly. A good mentor to help carry on the Rikkaidai legacy."

Gen-chan giggled. "You just don't want to be train the newbies." His brother was strict and cold. When Gensaburo first talked about needing the Regulars to step up and take a more active role in training the club, his brother didn't look thrilled. He was good one on one. Patient with him when it came to Kendo, but a large group of kids that were learning to swing a racket would be a real test for Genichirou. A test of patience.

His brother grunted and then walked away.

Ah. It seems he was right.

o.O.o

Kirihara grinned as he stood on one the pillars at the front gates of Rikkaidai. He made it and he was going to own Rikkaidai! He was going to join the tennis team, beat everyone, and be the best player in the whole country. He stood proud as numerous students walked past him, letting them see the future champion.

The school was nice. It was large and had a rich feel to it. There were large banners flying in front, showing four different boys. He didn't care about them. He was here to beat the tennis team and be the best. First step, register for the tennis club. Second step, beat the regulars. Third, be the best.

"I'm going to be number one!" He yelled. "I'm going to be the tennis player ever!"

His mood was broken when a teacher showed up and yelled at him to get down. He was escorted to the office to be dressed down. He didn't care. He grudgingly listened to his new home room teacher talk to him about deportment.

"The first class hasn't even started yet. You are probably the first student to ever get a detention before home room!" the man ranted.

"I was excited, okay!" he tried to defend himself.

"That doesn't give you permission to stand on the gates and yell."

Akaya rolled his eyes. He wasn't here to listen to old men speak down to him. He was here for tennis!

"Sensei! I needed to get it off my chest. It was building up and it needed out. I am going to be the bet tennis player her!" Kirihara announced for the whole office.

"You're going to be a problem this year, I can tell." Kirihara puffed up his chest. His father was a lawyer and always said that the first thing you should do when meeting someone was to make an impression. He said 'good' but any impression was good in his book.

After, he was ushered to his new classroom and sat beside a small boy with messy black hair and a cute face. He was weak looking and Kirihara snorted thinking the boy couldn't even see over a net.

"Hello," the boy greeted him. "We'll be seatmates for the year. I'm Sanada Gensaburo, please take care of me."

Kirihara looked him up and down while rubbing his nose. "You smart?" he asked.

The boy nodded his head slowly. "I do pretty well on my school work."

That's the ticket! "Good. I'm going to have to copy your work."

"I don't think that's a good idea… you should be doing your own work." Bah.. the boy didn't get it. Akaya had stuff to do and couldn't spend all his time and brain power on school work.

"Look, I'm going to be the best player on the tennis team and I need to sleep and go to practice. School work will get in the way. You have to help me. Don't you want the school to win another Nationals." Kirihara tried to reason with the kid. Even he must have heard about Rikkaidai's unbeatable team. He needed to have some school pride.

"I'm sorry but I really think you need to do your own school work. Rikkaidai has more pride than just their tennis team. A good student and a good player go hand in hand. You need to focus on your school work and club together in order to achieve your dreams."

Who did this kid think he was? Kirihara knew what he was doing!

"But if you run into something you don't understand I will happily help tutor you on the subject," he offered.

Kirihara wanted to yell at the boy that he didn't get it. But… he was nice… and offered to help him in a nerdy sort of way. He wasn't half bad. Plus, he was unusually cute for a boy and it would be weird to hit him. "Fine. But I'm no good at English or math." He warned.

The boy smiled at him. "English is my best subject!"

Well his seatmate wasn't useless at least.

The teacher entered then and started introductions. It felt like the whole thing took hours for everyone to stand and introduce themselves. When it was his turn he stood up quickly and knocked his chair over. "I'm Kirihara Akaya, a super awesome tennis player that is going to be the best player here! I'm going to join the tennis team and win the Nationals!"

The class laughed at him. He didn't like it and outed at their actions.

"Ya! I am going to be the best! Just watch me!" He yelled before picking up his chair and sitting down. Stupid class… they didn't get it.

The introductions carried on until they hit his partner.

"Hello everyone, I am Sanada Gensaburo. I plan to join the Archery team this year and if I have time, the Kendo team." He did a small bow to the class before sitting down. Kirihara huffed when he heard some girls giggling about how cute Gensaburo was.

"Hey Sanada-kun, you're a boy right?" He asked.

Sanada gave him a confused look. "Yes? Why?"

"Cause you're really cute for a boy. You're not like those girls in manga that dress up like boys to join the boy's sports teams, right?" He had to ask.

"No… I'm a boy. And I think the Archery team is co-ed."

Kirihara nodded. "You take care of yourself. My Older sister says that boys that are too cute get eaten alive."

The class started, and Kirihara couldn't talk to his seat buddy until lunch.

"Yes!" he cheered! "I'm going to go sign up for the tennis club now!"

Sanada smiled. "I'm going to the Archery dojo now. I will see you after lunch Kirihara-san."

Akaya watched his new friend go. He still couldn't picture the kid doing anything physical. He was small and delicate looking. He should get the kid to start working out with him, beef him up and stuff so no one picks on him.

Before he could leave though, his teacher stopped him and reminded him that he had detention. It wouldn't be until school ended that he could make it to the tennis courts. He was a bundle of energy and needed to get out and run like right now. He was vibrating so har din his seat that his buddy was sending him worried looks. When the bell finally rang, he raced out of the room and desperately searched for the courts.

First, he got lost and then when he asked a second year for directions, he was given bad directions. He ended up in the Student Council room and embarrassed.

Second, when he made it to the courts, he was being hassled by some older students. Sure, there was some nice ones. Some bald man and a kid with purple hair. But while he was regaling the two with how he was going to be the best, the regulars showed up. They put him down. They didn't believe in him. Well, he wasn't going to stand for that!

He challenged them to a match and easily beat them all! Take that third years!

Then, he spotted his new friend.

"Sanada-chan!" he called as he ran over to the tiny boy at the side of the court. "Whatcha doing here?" He thought the boy was all about arrows.

His new friend smiled. "Kirihara-san, I was just stopping by to talk to my brother," he said as he gestured to a tall boy. Kirihara squinted his eyes as he examined the boy. They had the same colouring, but they were Japanese, they all had similar colouring. But the eyes were different and the height. The brother was tall. Like tall tall, like how tall Kirihara hoped to be when he was in second year. He had a super serious face and ole man frown lines between his eyes.

Then it registered that he saw this brother before! He was in the newspaper article about Rikkaidai. He was a first year regular.

"Ah! I know you!" he yelled happily. "You're my kouhei now!"

"What?" The brother asked with a glare.

He had to laugh. "I just beat your third year regulars, so now I'm the best player here!"

"Oh? But if you want to be the best, you need to beat us." A blue haired girl said as she stepped forward. She was followed by a boy with a slight bowl cut and no eyes.

"You're just second years! I beat the third years!" he explained.

"But you have to beat all the regulars." Blue said.

Kirihara grunted. "I'll beat you all no problem!" He said. "And when I do, Sanada-chan you have to do my English homework today okay!" He was going to win and get something out of this!

"Kirihara-san, I really don't think this is a good idea," his friend tried to talk him out of it.

"Trust me Sanada-chan! I'm the best. I just need to show these guys," he explained.

"I'll go first," The brother said as he grabbed a racket from his bag.

Sanada-chan tried to stop the match but Akaya was ready to play and brushed his new friend's worries aside.

What followed was an eye opener for him. He was strong. He made a large splash on the junior circuit and easily beat those third years… but The Brother… he was strong. Stronger than Kirihara imagined. He struggled. He had to push harder than ever to return a shot, to reach the ball, to get a point. He could feel his frustration growing with each ball that passed over the net. He pulled every move he knew to try and win but nothing worked.

Then something snapped inside of him. His frustration and anger just… calmed. He focus sharpened. He could feel energy returning to him and he went wild. He never played so fiercely before. He was moving faster, his balls were stronger, he could see The Brother frowning as this game was no longer as easy as it was.

Sanada-chan never told him his brother played tennis and that he was a god. He felt a tiny bit of anger at his new friend. He should have been warned!

Then The Brother, he pulled out a new move. That's when Kirihara realized that despite throwing everything he had into this game, The Brother was still only playing at half his power. This boy was a monster.

He lost.

He lost badly.

He wasn't the strongest.

He was weak.

He failed.

He ran away then. He was mad at himself, he was mad at Sanada-chan, he was mad at the whole situation. He had never felt so weak as he did then. He was used to being strong and beating people, but to be defeated like he was… he didn't know how to handle it.

o.O.o

Gensaburo watched his new friend run away. He was sad that the overly confident boy was so beaten down. He tried to warn him, but Kirihara didn't want to listen. It would be a hard lesson for him, but everyone needed to struggle a little to reach the top.

"Who did he beat?" Gen-chan asked the team.

Shyly, his three third years stepped forward with an embarrassed flush on their cheeks. "You lost. You know the rules. You are on ball duty for a month."

They tried to protest but Gensaburo held up a hand to stop them. "First, you lost. You shouldn't even be regulars anymore. Second, you participated in an unsanctioned match. Third, I heard that you were bullying a new potential team member before he turned in his application. You will go back to Silver, and clean up balls for a month." His words struck hard, forcing the third years to meekly accept their punishment.

Looking up, Gensaburo was greeted by Seiichi's smiling face. The older boy looked extremely happy about something but he didn't want to try to figure it out at the moment. "I'm going to go find Kirihara-san," He informed his brother.

He didn't think he would really find the boy as he ran pretty fast, but Gensaburo managed to run into his friend around the corner from the front gate. The poor boy looked so lost and upset.

"Gah! Stupid school being so big. How do I get out of here!" Kirihara yelled as he kicked the building.

"You were almost there, just around the corner," he told his friend.

Kirihara looked up and glared at him. "I don't want to talk to you right now!" he screamed. "Why didn't you tell me about your brother!"

Gen-chan approached slowly, like he would a wounded animal. "I would have if you told me you were going to challenge the regulars. The tennis team has a system in place for challenges. You can challenge a regular on Fridays to take their spot. If you fail, you are on ball duty for the week and then allowed to try again. It keeps the Regulars on their toes and promotes a competitive side to the members not a regular. A goal to work towards every week." He explained. "Although it is not a Friday or a sanctioned match, you did beat some Regulars. You earned your spot."

Kirihara looked away. "It doesn't matter. What's the point when I didn't beat the best player there. Your brother is a monster. I won't join the tennis team until I am able to take him down!" the boy declared.

"Kirihara-san, how much did you research the Rikkaidai team before you came here?" he asked. It seemed like the boy was missing a lot of information.

The taller boy rubbed his nose and looked away sheepishly. "Not a lot. I read the article in the paper about how they won Nationals, and I knew I had to come here to be seen as the best player."

So he knew nothing about the tennis team. What was Gen-chan going to do with his new friend? He was an idiot.

Walking forward, he lightly grasped the bigger boys' wrist and dragged him to the front of the school. "If you want to beat them, then you need to learn about them. My brother isn't the strongest player."

Akaya balked at him. "Then who is?"

Dragging him to the still flying banners, Gensaburo pointed to them. "Did you see these at all when you were shouting at the top of your lungs this morning?"

Kirihara squinted as he finally looked at the posters. "Hey, why are you sleeping?"

He sighed. "Last year a friend wanted to do a big promotion for the Tennis team. He gathered us together and had a photo session. They chose this photo of me to put up," he said with a pout.

"Last year? Aren't you a first year?"

Yes he was. He was in class with Akaya… Mah… he spent to much time around the adults at the -17 camp.

"I will start from the beginning," Gen-chan offered. "See The Child of God?"

Kirihara squinted again as he took in Seiichi's picture. "The girl? Yeah. What's up with there being a girl on the boy's tennis team?"

He should talk to Kirihara's parents about taking him to get his eyes checked. This was the second time he had mistaken a boy for a girl. Or he read too much manga.

"That's Yukimura Seiichi, the current Captain of the Tennis team… and a boy." He should probably clarify that. "He's the strongest person. To be number one, you must beat him, but he is undefeated. My brother has only ever beaten him twice in all the years we have known him."

"But your brother is like scary strong and big. Like what do your parents feed him?"

"The same thing they feed me." This was going to take awhile. "Seiichi is a very cunning boy. I have been my brothers unofficial tennis coach for a while, and Seiichi manipulated it last year that I would coach the tennis team too."

Kirihara suddenly grabbed his shoulders and turned him so they were staring at each other. Very closely. "You are the tennis coach!"

"Yes. I coached them last year, but I had to prove myself. They couldn't lose a single match or I would lose my position."

"Marry me."

Gen-chan blinked at the sudden proposal. "What?"

Kirihara was holding him so tight. "Marry me. Then you can be my coach and I can beat those guys. But you have to marry me so I don't have to return you to your brother or parents."

A hand reached between them and then Gensaburo was being pulled away from Akaya. "That's enough of that." Looking up, he shouldn't have been surprised to see Seiichi glaring down at his friend.

"Hey you Girly Boy!" Kirihara screamed. "I'm going to beat you someday!"

Seiichi smirked. "I look forward to crushing you."

"I'm going to make you cry so hard you could fill an ocean!" Kirihara was jumping up and down as he pointed his finger at the Captain. He was going to be in so much pain.

"The ocean is already full of water. Maybe 'an empty swimming pool' would have fit your threat better," Seiichi teased the boy.

"Yeah. I'll make you cry so hard you will fill a pool!"

"I would love to see you try."

Genichirou appeared them with a frown on his face. "Gensaburo, it's time you returned to greet the new members."

"Okay!" he smiled. "Kirihara-san, are you coming back to the club?"

The energetic boy seemed hesitant. Probably because he caused a disturbance and then ran off.

He looked away and glared at the ground. "I'm not returning until I'm strong enough to beat one of those guys!" He said as he wildly pointed towards the flying banners. "When I beat one, then I will join the team!"

Then he ran away again.

"He has some good speed," Gensaburo pointed out.

He would be a great addition to the team. When they finally captured the wild boy.
