James Potter had become increasingly distracting.

A problem Lily had not been able to find a suitable solution for. Perhaps one of the reasons was because she was also unable to comprehend why her attention wavered while she was around him. Whatever the reason or solution was, it needed to stop.

Now.

Which is why on this particularly hot March day, Lily had locked herself in the library while most of her classmates were enjoying the first warmth of spring. James, no doubt, would be with the rest of his friends, therefore allowing Lily to study in peace.

The first few hours had gone exactly as she planned, but at quarter to three, the person who she had so desperately tried to avoid walked in with his usual saunter. He gave a slight nod in her direction and then proceeded to sit at a table on the other side of the room. Lily could barely contain her indignation. This wasn't fair. Yet, less than five minutes later, a young second year Lily recognized from their house sat next to him

Lily almost fell off of her chair.

Her homework completely forgotten, Lily stared at the unusual couple, wondering what business they could possibly have with each other. James seemed to be deeply explaining something to the boy, using his hands to aid him. The boy, sitting across from him, nodded eagerly and then became confused and shook his head. James looked a bit frustrated but took a deep breath and began again, but not before giving the second year a reassuring smile. But it wasn't until the younger boy took out a textbook and James opened it to a certain page, did Lily finally understand what was going on.

James was tutoring the boy.

It was then that a small smile formed on her face and she continued to watch them with more fondness than before. They seemed to be going over a certain spell that the small Gryffindor was unable to master. A one point the boy just gave up and hit his against the desk in defeat. But instead of giving up for today, James ruffled the boy's hair and said something that made the student look up in shock. Shock grew into determination, and the first year grabbed his wand, said the troublesome incantation and Lily's smile grew wide as his quill transformed into a small mouse.

James yelled in triumph as Lily tore her eyes from the scene, not wanting to be caught staring. Yet for the rest of their session, she continuously stole glances to the other side of the room, enamoured with the studious couple.

Soon enough, they packed up their supplies and James gave her another nod, before they both departed. Lily looked back at her own textbook, but felt uninspired with what laid in front of her. She gathered her own belongings as she reflected on how little she had accomplished in the library. Though, with a small smile, she admitted that it had not been a complete waste. It might not have been what she planned, but she had learnt something.
