Guys this is it! The last chapter. I am SOOOO sorry this has taken so long to finish. My mum being really poorly has made it hard to find time to write, but I've always loved this story and am so grateful for all your comments that I knew I had to finish it. I hope you like it...
Chapter 11 – One of those days – filled with love.
It had all come and gone in a flash, a blur of kisses, cuddles, a few arguments and a lot of love filled days curled up on her sofa. All of those moments had been leading to this.
It seemed like only yesterday they'd been on their first date. He'd arrived at her flat looking more handsome than any man she had ever seen and swept her away to Hogwarts of all places. Once they'd apparated into Hogsmeade he'd led her through hidden passages she'd never even knew existed and she thought she'd discovered all the secrets Hogwarts had to offer in her seven years at the school. Eventually they'd arrived at the clock tower. The sun was just beginning its descent and the colours and shadows it created high above the Hogwarts Castle were simply beautiful. Remus had set out a blanket with some food and a bottle of vintage wine he'd been saving for the perfect occasion. The memory of the evening swirled around Tonk's head creating in her as it always did, a feeling of complete contentment.
They'd gone through so much, Sirius had gone far too soon, before he'd really been able to celebrate his freedom and then Dumbledore. For a few days after Dumbledore had gone, Tonks had worried that people were giving up, especially Remus. He was distant has he had been for months, but more than that, he'd seemed resigned.
It was a sad fact that if it wasn't for the death of a man they'd both admired so much, Remus may never have come back to her. He'd left Remus a note, a simple reminder – 'I realise, that in times such as these, spending time with friends, family and those closest to us is perhaps more precious to us than during peacetime. Making time for friendship, love and new relationships are perhaps a large part of what we're fighting for… Never stop fighting Remus for those you love.' She knew the note off by heart, she'd placed it in a frame and given it to Remus as a wedding gift, it stood on the nightstand beside their bed.
That is what they were doing – all of them. Fighting for those they love. She knew that many people would judge her for her decision, but she knew without doubt it was the right one.
She would never ever forget the day she told Remus he was going to be a father. It was one she remembered with a mixture of joy, anger and unadulterated excitement and love. He'd been so happy, until he'd allowed his cautious, guilt ridden side to take over him, because amongst the love, the cuddles and the kisses, the few arguments Tonks and Remus had ever had, always came down to the same thing – he wasn't good enough for her, he was old, dangerous and poor and she would be better without him. It was tedious, annoying and utterly and complete rubbish. Remus was the best thing that had ever happened to her, he made her smarter, more compassionate and loved her more than she'd ever thought possible.
He'd never told her what Harry had said to him, but he had been honest and told her that she owed Harry a great big hug then next time she saw him, that he had been the one who had finally been able to knock some sense into her stubborn husband.
She knew her mother would understand her decision. She too had fought for her husband. Fought the prejudice of her family and his to be with the man she loved. She'd never once questioned whether Tonks was sure she wanted to marry someone older or poorer or someone who suffered from lycanthropy, because her mother knew that just like her, once Tonks fell in love, she'd move mountains if she had to. Her mother and her father, before he'd died had welcomed Remus into their home and their family as if he was their own flesh and blood. She had loved watching Remus comfort her mother since they had lost her dad, she would often stand in her bedroom and watch the two of them tending to what had been her father's garden. To some it must have seemed beyond crazy to think the upkeep of a few flowers so important when the world was going to hell around them, but Remus had understood and had spent hours helping her Andromeda to continue something that had meant so much to her late husband.
Tonks finished writing her last letter. She'd already written one for Remus, one for Harry and Ginny – she hoped they would find each other in peacetime and help each other heal after all they'd been through in their short lives. She'd written to Hermione and Ron, she hoped that Hermione would let her ideals of perfection to slip just enough to how perfect Ron would be for her. She wrote a short note to her mother, she knew that her mother knew everything about her, every secret she'd ever had her mother knew. All she needed her mother to know is that she loved her unconditionally and that it had been her unconditional love for Tonks that had allowed her to be the confident life loving person she had become. She'd also left a short note for Mrs Weasley. In those few short months that Remus had denied to allow their love to develop, it had Mrs Weasley that she had really been able to open up to and she would be forever thankful for her wisdom and support, not to mention the help whenever she'd attempted to cook for Remus.
The final letter was the hardest. How could she explain her decision to her most beloved son. Until the moment Teddy had been born, she'd been convinced that she could never love anyone more than Remus but it wasn't true. Giving life to Teddy is what her and Remus had been created for, she was sure of that. The fact that they'd been blessed enough to spend time falling in love before having him was merely a gift from the gods to thank them for Teddy. He didn't belong to her Remus, he belonged to the world. She couldn't explain any of it, but she knew that her son was destined for greatness, that he would be part of a generation that would ensure peace would reign. She tried over and over again to express the love she felt for him and gratitude for the short time she'd been able to spend with him. Her tears stained the paper as she signed the letter, sealed it and placed it on the pile with the others.
It was such a strange feeling as she kissed Teddy, sleeping in his crib and left the room. It was that she was being pessimistic, she just knew, in the same way that she's known her and Remus were destined to be together, in exactly the same was sure that Teddy was destined for great things, she was also 100% convinced that she had just kissed her baby boy goodnight for the last time.
She pulled on her long overcoat and grabbed her wand and left the house before she had any time to think about her decision. Her husband was fighting for a better world for their son and even though she knew it would be the last thing she did, she was determined that she would be by his side fighting too.
As she walked out of the safety spells Remus had placed around the house so she could apparate, she thought back to the first date she'd had with her beautiful husband. Not the night at Hogwarts clock tower, but that night so long ago that it seemed like a beautiful sweet dream, when they'd curled up on her sofa watching Gilmore Girls and eating bacon sandwiches. It was the perfect weekend, and one they had repeated many times. It was so much a part of their relationship, Remus had even used a line from that show in his wedding speech, she'd been aware at the time that people must have thought they were weird, but it had made her cry happy tears as he'd proudly announced to their few friends and family that he'd finally done what we all want and found someone nice to hang out with until he dropped dead.
As she took one last look at the house where her mother and beloved son slept soundly, she couldn't help but wish that they'd had a bit more time to hang out before the dropping dead bit, but she couldn't be more grateful for the time they had spent together. She knew that memories of her time with Remus would keep her going until she found him.
Ever since that first weekend they had spent together it had been One of Those Days, One of Those Days to be filled with cuddles, kisses and arguments. But more importantly, since meeting Remus every single one of her days had been filled with love.
In my head at least, I think Remus and Tonks were war-wearied enough to know they were likely to die in the Battle of Hogwarts. I hope this wasn't too sad an ending to what started as pure fluff! Thanks for sticking with me!
