Me: This is set in an AU where Matt and Mello are dating and live together in New York, 'kay? Also, I apologize if either of them are OOC because I haven't actually met them yet in the anime (though I love them to bits) and did this as a request :)

"Matt? I'm home." Mello called as he opened the door to their apartment. He looked around and spotted his boyfriend on the couch, absorbed in the television.
Mello walked over and looked at the screen. "Why are you watching the news?" He asked, having expected to find the redhead playing a video game.
"I'm waiting." Matt replied simply, his eyes never straying from the weatherman.
"For what?" Mello inquired with a frown as he flopped down next to Matt.
"I want to see if the Senate passes the bill about gay marriage." Was the response.
"That could take days." Mello told him, "why don't we go somewhere while we wait?"
"Nah." The gamer said with a shrug, causing his blonde counterpart to roll his eyes.
"Whatever, I'm getting something to eat." Mello stood and walked into the kitchen.
"Hey Mel?" Matt called after a moment.
"Hm?"
"Do you think they'll pass it?" There was silence for a moment, then a sigh from Mello.
"I don't know, Matt."
After a few days, Mello began to wonder why Matt was so set on knowing the second the bill had been passed, but he didn't ask his boyfriend.
The blonde was sitting in an armchair, a chocolate bar in one hand and a manga in the other. Matt was- once again- sitting on the edge of the couch and watching the news.
Mello wasn't paying any attention, so he didn't hear what the news anchor had said, nor did he see his boyfriend's eyes widen and a large grin spread across Matt's lips.
He did notice, however, when Matt leapt to his feet and shouted "HALLELUJAH!" At the top of his lungs.
"What?" Mello asked, jumping up and looking around.
"They passed the bill, Mel! They passed it!" Matt shouted, pointing wildly at the screen.
"Huh? You mean the marriage bill?" Mello asked, causing Matt to nod frantically. "Seriously?"
Matt grabbed Mello and swung him around, causing the chocoholic to laugh in surprise. "We should celebrate!" Matt exclaimed once Mello's feet were firmly fixed upon the ground once again. "And I have the perfect way."
"How?" Mello quirked an eyebrow and smirked.
Matt stepped back and put his hand in his pocket, before pulling out a black velvet box. "Matt?" Mello looked at him in confusion.
The redhead dropped down to one knee in front of Mello and smiled, "Now that it's no longer illegal... will you marry me?" He opened the lid of the box to reveal a ring.
Mello gaped for a moment, shock written across his features. He recovered quickly, however. "You didn't have to wait for it to be legal!" He shouted, tackling Matt to the floor and crushing their lips together.
"Can I take that as a yes?" Matt giggled.
"You can take that as a hell yes." Mello told him with a grin.
Me: I actually really liked that ending! :D I hope you liked it, Elsyra! Happy birthday once again!
