I really thought that I was going to scrap the epilogue chapter, but with how the last chapter ended, I surely felt that this story at least deserves a much better ending. It's really to clear up with the stuff I didn't think too much when I first planned the story combined with some original ideas I had back then that I surprisingly still remember, especially when I'm a little bit forgetful... Anyways, this is the actual final chapter of the story and I really hope you enjoy it!
The World God Only Knows
It's the Ending for Us
Chapter 10 – Same Old Life
Alice was making herself at home in Dokuro's office with a cup of tea prepared on the unusually tidy desk. She could consider herself a regular at Dokuro's office since her sister Elsie left for the human world a couple of weeks before as she couldn't help but being a doting sister. As always, Dokuro would be away from her office when she asked if she could come by, but any kind of beverage would always be prepared for her district chief guests for either official or personal matter.
Alice's business with her were mostly personal as Dokuro could help her see Elsie's daily life in the human world. Official matter wouldn't come until a few weeks when she would be tasked of fostering more devils in the team, much like how she first met Elsie and the other devils in her class. Time had gone by so fast and their lives were returning like the way they were many years ago.
The district chief leaned on her chair as she enjoyed her tea, but the sudden touch on her bare shoulder gave her the shock of her lifetime. The cup of hot beverage was thrown behind her before she started casting various spells, only to see the black-coated skeleton behind her with the fallen cup upside down on her head making it like a small porcelain hat.
"U-Uh…" Alice bowed in guilt, "M-My apologies… Chief…"
"Please," Dokuro took the cup from her head as she used her own spell to blow dry her wet hood, "there's no need to panic anymore in this place."
"It's… turning into a habit from staying in the human world," Alice sat back down when Dokuro let her, "Chief, I'm going to ask for the usual 'thing'. Is it ready today?"
"Oh, you're trying to see how Elsie's doing today?" Dokuro searched through her drawer before she took out a thick glass-like object, "The monitor should be fully charged to be used for this whole day, but please don't use up the whole battery."
"I'm just going to see what she's doing today," the district chief tapped on the glass a few times before the image appeared, "Oh, is that Elsie going to school?"
"Elly!"
"Everyone!"
The God of Conquest didn't want to turn his attention away from his games, but the sounds of the girls' yelling and sobbing were bothering him too much. Elsie and the rest of the 2-B Pencils were involved in a group hug while crying after seeing their missing bassist after months of absence. Much like her reunion with his mother, Keima felt the band reunion was like another live soap opera in class.
"I'm sorry I've been away for so long," Elsie said between her sobs, "How is everyone doing?"
"We've decided to enroll into the same university," Chihiro patted Elsie on her shoulder, "Are you coming with us too, Elly?"
"If nii-sama is going there, I'm coming too!" Elsie turned to see Keima back in his games in his seat, "And nii-sama is playing his games again…"
Ayumi let out a sigh as she turned her attention to the young man, "I can't believe I'm saying that I'm glad to see him playing his games again…"
"What do you mean, Ayumi-san?" Elsie turned to her bandmate with a questioning look.
"He seems to be in his own world when you were gone," Yui spoke up as she looked at the gamer, "The teachers used to scold him for playing games in class, but recently the reason for scolding was because he would spend his time staring out at the window. His grades seemed to have dropped a little, though he still passed the final exam."
"Don't get me started on how gloomy it felt when I walked by him every morning," Chihiro commented, "It looked like the window was a lot more interesting than the games he was addicted to."
Elsie stared at the gamer for a few moments, imagining how he looked like the entire time she was away from him. She had always known that he wasn't the type of person to be attached to actual people, so his actions back then came as a surprise to her. Was he worried for her being missing and coming back being possessed by a loose soul?
She thought back to the time when they were still hunting loose souls together and knew that Keima wasn't a horrible person at all. People couldn't understand him completely that he was judged to be a weird and anti-social person. They couldn't see that in her eyes, Keima Katsuragi was a very good and capable person. Sure, he did treat her a bit harshly back then, but that was because of her own incompetence.
Her incompetence. That was already in the past, but she still hadn't proven herself to be more competent after she got her promotion. She would have paperwork to do both as a district chief and a delegate between humans and devils and that would be one way of proving to him that she was no longer the 'No-Good Demon'. Except her actual work wouldn't come until a few weeks when the patrolling devils would come by and give her their reports. But there was one more thing she could think of doing…
"I've decided," Elsie stood up confidently as her bandmates looked at her in confusion, "I'm going to prove myself useful to nii-sama!"
The confusion soon faded as Chihiro let out a laugh, "Well, I guess we've got our old Elly back. So, should we plan our rehearsal for the farewell party?"
Four hours. The God of Conquest was losing his patience after he was locked out of his room when he clearly had a few new games to beat. His self-proclaimed illegitimate sister had locked him out for reasons he didn't understand, but it wasn't just the time that was his concern. Knowing how she could scrub his PFP clean with water and soap back then, she could do far worse with many consoles and games in his room.
"Oi, Elsie! Open the door already!" Keima was practically banging the door with all his might, as he and Elsie were the only ones in the house. If his mother was home, he could've asked for her spare keys though she would most likely try to keep him out of his games again. Without any spare keys, the only choice of getting in was to have Elsie let him enter.
The gamer slid down the door and sat in front of it, only to realize that he was sitting on something. When he took it out, he noticed that the object he picked up was none other than his room key. He let out a sigh as he realized that Elsie had locked herself in his room. He got back to his feet to unlock the door and kick the bug demon out, until to notice that she had fallen asleep on his gaming chair.
He angrily stomped towards her to drag her out of the room, but saw that the messy stack of games which had pilled up were stored neatly into his shelves. He went to check them and saw that the games were classified by consoles and sorted alphabetically, though the same series with different titles were still separated because of the alphabetical sorting.
The consoles of various generations were completely free of dust, but there was no trace of water or soap on them. They were all neatly lined up above the shelves, sorted by their size, along with the cables rolled up neatly at the end of the shelves. Unfortunately, the cables for different consoles were mixed up into one and were put on different shelves from their original consoles.
His room wasn't as messy as he left it, but he wasn't too fond of the sorting and organizing she did to his beloved games. But seeing as Elsie had put hours into cleaning up something that would even take days to achieve, he should at least give her some credits, shouldn't he? She even did it without having him or anyone else tell her to do so.
Keima saw how Elsie had been enjoying herself sleeping on his favorite chair. Nope, credits could wait another day. He pushed Elsie to the other end of the small chair, just for him to have enough space to play without having any physical contact to bother him. He booted up the next game he was going to play, not noticing the movements from beside him.
"Kami-sama…" Elsie still had her eyes shut as she talked in her sleep while moving around until she could grab the God of Conquest's neck, "Kami… sama…"
"Ugh!" Keima responded from the sudden touch, though he was trapped on his chair as Elsie had drowsily put her hands around his neck, "W-What… are you doing…"
Keima only got quiet snores as his answer, but he wasn't comfortable in that position for long especially when their faces were only inches apart. Trying to push themselves of the chair was out of the question because he was trying to avoid that kind of incident once more when they got into a similar position. He didn't want to know how his mother would react if she came home to find them in that kind of incident.
He had been in that kind of position with the other girls he had conquered for the sake of driving the loose souls out of them, so he could say that he was used to it. Accidental ones were the one he was trying avoid, as it happened to him with someone in front of him, whom he hadn't expected.
"… to prove…"
Keima's trains of thoughts had gone into a complete stop as he heard the voice coming from the sleeping girl in front of him.
"… I'm not a failure… anymore…" Elsie snuggled closer to Keima, "… I miss… nii… sama…"
Keima let out a sigh, "Seriously…" she was just like her old self, trying to prove her worth, and he knew that all too well.
He was used to having her in his life for years that he was getting used to her clinginess at some times. Her being missing might have made him felt that something or someone in his life was missing, which was something he had never felt before. He had never considered helping out at his mother's café before Elsie came and went away. Her being in his life had changed him and he felt that the change he was experiencing might not be a bad thing. It was still hard for him to describe how he saw her now, but he knew that she wasn't the same failure she was when she first came.
"At least you did something useful," Keima whispered as he looked around his room, "Though not correct entirely."
Unknown to him, Elsie had been awake this whole time and was pretending to sleep, just to hear the praise she wanted to hear so badly. She let out a smile as her grip on his neck tightened to the point that Keima noticed something was off.
"O-Oi, are you trying to choke me?!" Keima was stuck in a tight lock, "Stop it, you're strangling me!"
She was getting closer and closer to him. Maybe at that point she was still nothing but a little sister to him, but someday she could be a bit more. She just needed to prove herself that she wasn't the little sister he needed to look after all the time. She hoped that one day, she would be the one to take care of him too.
Incident? What incident? It's been hinted in the second chapter and there are plenty of hints here too, so you can guess!
To be honest, I never expected to write this today because I kinda felt a bit under the weather since morning, but since I'm feeling better with a bit of rest then I guess it's not really that big of a deal. Also, I never actually expect to have this story finished this year or even to have it finished at all. I remember thinking that I should be putting this story on infinite hiatus until I saw the story's view (and Haqua's side too) again a few years ago and they're pretty much my most popular short fics, along with other older fics I did around the same year then. I was still relatively new then with little to no experience in writing in a language that's not my first, but you guys have been really kind to a newcomer like me to give my work a lot of appreciation and useful input. I don't have any plans to write more for this fandom, but TWGOK will always have a special place in my heart for being a part of my teenhood(?).
Sorry for the really long rant, but once again, thank you all for being such loyal readers in all these years! The final chapter for Haqua's side will also be up in a few minutes!
